Can something be "done" with Driver's license info?

My parents got rid of their 2000 car by selling it to a mechanic at the garage where they did their oil change at.

Now the mechanic is saying that he sold it to someone else and that person needs a copy of my dad's driver's license (since he was the owner)

They think its no big deal.

Can anyone think of negatives that could happen from someone having a copy of your driver's license?

There's no SS# so they cannot apply for credit cards or anything with banks.

Potentially with the license number they could log onto DMV and apply for a change of address and get a new one so then they would have a "real" version of her license...?

I don't know - any thoughts?

Thanks

Thinking about it more, I can't see any reason why they would need the license...

What reason does the buyer having for wanting the license?

They maybe would ask for a title.

But asking for a license is useless and unnecessary information. I woudn't give it.

Besides, your parents have zero responsibility at this point to that car.

Is the transaction complete? There’s no reason the buyers would need your father’s license and I would decline the request citing privacy issues.

I don't know of any legitimate reason they would need a copy of his license. I wouldn't provide it. Especially since your father was not the owner when it was sold to this person. Nope, wouldn't do it

The only thing they need to buy that car is the title I would think
I assume your dad signed the title over to the mechanic when he sold it to him.
Now the mechanic will sign it over to the person buying it from him
No need for his license. He doesn't even own the car anymore

You can do so much with a DL say NO. You can use it for taking out credit, changing addresses for official items, change voting info. Do not give the DL, there is zero reason someone needs this.

no- I just sold a car to a neighbor of a friend. I did not know the person and my friend handled the transaction as a favor to us. (Paid me and gave me a form to sign- bill of sale.) I also signed the title over to the person. No license was needed. The only issue I had once many years ago was that someone did not register the car. It was left deserted on the roadside and the town called me, as I was the last person the car was registered to. In this most recent case my friend would not let him drive the car away without plates and a matching registration. If the mechanic has been doing business with your parents all these years, the buyer might just be being overly cautious

Thanks for the comments.

No idea WHY they want the driver's license, my dad did not ask the mechanic.

I do know there was a lot of issues getting rid of the car:
1. Parents dropped off the car at the mechanic - but they didn't have the title - so I had to contact the DMV and get them a new copy of the title
2. They brought the title to the mechanic - whoops car dealership never took off the loan - I had to contact the dealership, but since the car was 20 years old they no longer had records. So I had to get in touch with the corporate arm of the manufacturer and get a notarized letter saying the load was paid off, lol.

Your parents are apparently better at maintaining their cars, then they are maintaining paperwork. LOL Good for them, that they were still able to sell it and get some money after 20 years!

Re: Can something be "done" with Driver's license info?

The only thing i can think of is the dealership never titled the car in their name and are trying to sell the car to this person with you as the technical owner still. Almost like a consignment.

Maybe they are doing this to avoid paying taxes of some sort on the gains.

I wouldn't give the license. See what they say. There is no need to give the license to a third party, unless again the dealer never titled the car themselves.

If the loan is off and they have the title signed over, they definitely don’t need a copy of the license.

I do know that my DH gave his brother a copy of his license with the title when he went to register the car. But it was his brother so that is why he was comfortable doing that.

Another story, one of my uncles drove around with his brothers license for months. Wracked up tickets galore and got his little brothers license suspended. My uncle had to go to court to fight it and reinstate it. Mind you this was in the 70s so I’m sure this is a lot harder to pull off. My uncle still talks about it till this day even though my uncle is no longer with us.Chat Icon

There’s always fraud to be had, if there’s a will there’s a way.
