Biden's education secretary

I was so thrilled to hear he chose Cardona. He was a teacher, a principal, and has experience in inner city classrooms. I thought for sure all teachers would be happy. However, I am hearing many teachers are really upset. They are saying he agrees with the "homicidal reopening of schools" and is the reason most of CT has in person schooling. They wanted an education secretary that would support full remote nation wide through September or December 2021, depending on when we hit mass vaccination. They also say he is pro school choice and pro charter schools. Apparently teachers in CT hate him and feel like he doesn't care about them.
None of that stuff bothers me, I am just so happy he is an educator and also not a maniac. Chat Icon
Interested to hear what the teachers think...

I wonder why the teachers hate him.

All this makes me so happy I will have no kids in public schools next year.

Re: Biden's education secretary

Even though it has been proven time and time again that covid does not spread in schools?
Homicidal? Really? How many children have died by going back to school?
I'm sorry but that sounds like utter lunacy. Sounds like people who want an excuse to not go to work.
The vaccine isn't even approved for use in children so when will it be ok to open schools?
Never?

Biden's education secretary

I belong to a teachers group on FB that is made up primarily of DOE teachers. I really need to delete myself from the group because it enrages me. Saying they want an educational secretary that will commit to all schools staying closed through June, vaccines to be mandatory, and my personal favorite...that the working class needs to boycott their jobs so the government will be forced to close schools and all non essential businesses through the summer and pay everyone in the city to stay home. They claim the only reason schools are open is to fund Wall St. They are completely unhinged. LOL

Aw, the teachers didn't get what they wanted? Let me go grab my coat, it's chilly here in homeschool hell.

I haven’t personally done any research on him. It’s on my list for after the holidays.

What I am hearing is that it’s been awhile since he was in the classroom. I’d like someone who was more recently in the trenches.

I’ve also heard that he wants schools open 100%. If this is true, as a NYC teacher- in an overcrowded school- this impossible to do safely. It’s not safe for students or staff. We have no budget for the extra teachers we needed with a reduced student load.

If the budget constraints were addressed and additional funding provided to ensure adequate safety precautions, would opening schools still be an issue?

Perhaps these psychopaths should find a new career then. Something nice and safe that can be done from a bunker.
Also i truly hope not one of them have left their home since March....no eating out , no vacation no matter how local, no seeing friends or family at all, no Target runs. Because if any one of them has.... well then their argument is out the window.

Kind of sad these people are so out of touch with reality and yet are responsible for educating the next generation. It’s confusing how this could be any rational persons point of view.

Sadly it’s always the lower income and most vulnerable that are hurt the most. Most bankers and wall streeters are just fine working from home. They have means to hire private care or nanny’s/tutors as needed. Its all the working class in the city, many of whom work at the airport, hospitals, drive buses/subways, sanitation, institutions, stores/restaurants, and of course a million other kinds of jobs. Do these teachers think $600 will just enable them to all stay home?

Do these people have any idea how the world even works?

I think that if a teacher is saying that keeping schools open is homicidal they should not be a teacher. That has to be one of the most uneducated comments I have heard.

Yup - I have a friend who is a BOE teacher and all her posts all over FB are about how schools should remain closed because it's so "dangerous" to have them open. Yet she also posts pics at get togethers and out and about with all different of people (not her "bubble") all close to each other in pics etc. I know it is only about her own preference and that staying home is less of a hassle for her - has nothing to do with what's right for the kids

Very sad and that is why I am so glad I am done this year as I am seeing the good and bad teachers. The ones who really want to teach and the ones who don't.
I am not very familiar how raises go with schools. I have been told in the past you need to take classes to make more money. But maybe if it was harder, like everyone else out in the working world, they would try harder as making over 100k is appealing to many but they don't want to put in the work to earn it.

I’ve heard so much complaining from teachers. The solution is to quit and go find a corporate job. There are many many teachers waiting to fill your role. Tired of hearing it. The City kids are so behind they are lucky not to be in school full year.

Can anyone clarify what is meant by Biden and his choice Cardona saying they want to open the schools back up as part of their short list of plans? I’ve seen it written a few times. Do they mean kids back in schools in states where they are still remote or literally back in, as they used to be with safety protocols of course? My child is still hybrid with a school district that says they can not take them full back unless social distancing is no longer required. I’m wondering how long this could actually be. Kids the same age, next district over are full time.

In my experience there is no profession that complains more about being underpaid and overworked than teachers, and frankly, in most districts on Long Island, I find this somewhat laughable.

Did you all hear about Dalton?
That fancy 50k a year private school in NYC. The teachers have requested certain changes be made:

* Hiring 12 full-time diversity officers, and multiple psychologists to support students “coping with race-based traumatic stress.”
* Assigning a staffer dedicated to black students who have “complaints or face disciplinary action,” and a full-time advocate to help black kids “navigate a predominantly white institution.”
* Paying the student debt of black staffers upon hiring them.
* Requiring courses that focus on “Black liberation” and “challenges to white supremacy.”
* Compensating any student of color who appears in Dalton promotional material.
* Abolishing high-level academic courses by 2023 if the performance of black students is not on par with non-blacks.
* Requiring “anti-racism” statements from all staffers.
* Overhauling the entire curriculum, reading lists and student plays to reflect diversity and social justice themes.
* Divesting from companies that “criminalize or dehumanize” black people, including private prisons and tech firms that manufacture police equipment or weapons.
* Donating 50 percent of all fundraising dollars to NYC public schools if Dalton is not representative of the city in terms of gender, race, socioeconomic background, and immigration status by 2025.

Does #6 mean that if there is an advance science class or whatever and the black students have lower grades then they will get rid of that class?

That sounds great. I wish public schools had some of those ideas implemented.

To be clear: I 100% agree with what you said earlier in the thread but this needs context you haven't given.

These are fringe lunatics and NOT the majority of NYC teachers.

I mean, they're complaining that DSA hasn't gone far enough - so they're off the charts. I tried to find a membership count and can't which means this group is tiny. I've been in NYC schools for some time and never heard of this caucus.

I just wouldn't want someone who doesn't know how it works to read this and think the majority are advocating for this. They are not.

You are correct. I apologize for not being more clear. This is absolutely a small group of DOE teachers and those few are the ones I was referring to when I said these are the people who are educating our children. I know many DOE teachers who are not like this. It is more upsetting they are making us all look bad.

Absolutely! I’m all for schools being fully opened- if it’s safe. We need full transparency as to what exactly will happen and a detailed plan with oversight. We need to make sure these protocols are being followed long term to ensure everyone’s safety.

This. Completely. The teachers that I know have either been granted ADA accommodations because of disability regarding exposure to the virus and allowed to work remotely or are at districts that have the resources to keep them safe re: distancing, air quality, reduced class size, etc. They're happy. But covid isn't the kind of thing where we can tell some teachers in less privileged districts that they have to be unsafe and that they're not valued just because society is impatient.
I do not know a lot about this new pick, but I will ask my friends who teach and see what they think. I have heard some good things about him, and I am willing to give him a chance.
