WWYD - RTO
I work for a large corporation that started inviting people back to the office in July this year. My building was not opened at the time, but the first batch of people returned September 22nd. Of the 250ish people on my floor 83 were invited back. On the first day 55 showed up, 40 on the second day, 30 on the third day. Most teams have decided to work 3 days per week. The floor has VERY few people on Mondays and Fridays. My SO is still working from home and we have 3 young kids. Seems like a no brainer but my boss is very adamant about returning to the office. She feels if we can WFH that they will just move our jobs to lower cost locations. She lives in the city and has no kids. I don't mind going in - I like people and the freedom, but I miss my kids, sleep and it costs money for extra child care and to commute. What would you do? I'm being ridiculous right?

Can you do two days? So its a mix of both since your boss is adamant of people going back.

I can ask - I'm just scared to do it. She is so happy to be back and thinks everyone should feel the same.

Re: WWYD - RTO
Ugh tough call...
I also work for a large corp - some have been back to the office FT in certain positions like R&D, engineering, manufacturing etc. Yet jobs that can be WFH have remained WFH. They have extended it over and over...now its January 2022 but will be a flex schedule, in 2 or 3, home the other days.
Its sooo hard because I think we have become so accustomed now to being home. Its so much less stressful without the commute and running around in the mornings and getting home late in the day. Yet my office is in Melville, not NYC. I commuted years ago and I dont miss that. It sounds like you dont have to go in the 5 full days right? Maybe you can negotiate only 2 and just say you dont feel comfortable riding public transit too much just yet, especially coming into the colder months.

Re: WWYD - RTO
It's a tough call but a lot of managers/bosses fell this way. They don't see the work getting done. I hope the trend stays with a move towards WFH. I was not allowed to WFH during the pandemic and I am thinking about moving jobs that would allow for that - at least one or two days a week.

Re: WWYD - RTO
I’m confused are you saying you have the option to go back in to the office how often you want or your boss is making you and you are debating staying with the job?
I am remote before covid and I enjoy it and would prefer to work from home. If I had to go into the office and they are asking how often i want to. I would probably do 2-3 days.

Officially I am back in the office. The company is saying once you are invited to return the expectation is 5 days per week. Unofficially, no one is actually doing that (except my boss). I have come in every day since my return date. It's fine - but because of my family/the expense and the fact that almost no one is working 5 days, I want to ask for a flex schedule. My boss is VERY unhappy with the unofficial rules. She is here every day and will continue to be.

If she is unhappy why is she not enforcing the official rule to the ones not coming in?
Either way I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask. Is the worse she can do tell you no? As long as you don’t get fired maybe see if you can do 2-3 days. I would suggest 3 days though since she wants people in!

They have only invited back people who have reported that they are vaccinated and although I don't know official numbers, I think less than half the people reported. (Including like half my boss' management team.) I reported last year, wasn't aware this was going to be the setup.

Ask but be prepared to either go in every day or start to look for a hybrid or remote position.
You were hired to be in the office. So they don’t have to let you wfh. Also companies are re-evaluating salaries for wfh positions as those can be filled by anyone.

I am sure it's hard to go back from full time working at home to full time in office after being home the last year and a half. I'm having a hard time and the office is 2 miles from home (I'm still at one day in the office though because nobody else on my team is coming in regularly).
I would ask and see if you can go in a couple of days a week. It's hard when some managers feel the same way yours does while others are opposite. We seem to have that at my company as well as many are mad they are "forced" to come in...

Agree. They don't have to let you do anything. It wold be nice if they were flexible, but at the end of the day you were hired to be in the office. These past 2 years have been a nice little break from reality but some people feel it's time to get back to normal. Again, you can ask. If she says no, you have to make a choice.
