Curious how the vaccine mandate is actually impacting the city. Now that it’s getting cold out….are restaurants having trouble with indoor dining? Are fire/police stations really closed down? How are schools doing with the vaccine mandate, any shortages?

I don’t ever go into the city and don’t know many people who live there so I don’t really know what goes on there. Just my FDNY friends saying that stations will be closing and I’m curious if that’s really true.

DH does - yes, many firehouses are closed down already and many of those that remain open are responding short staffed.

Two people died yesterday and overnight in fires, including a 7 year old child. Two people were also severely injured in these fires (and I’m sure firemen were as well). But hey - everyone responding is vaccinated so it’s ok.

I don't live or work there but with this mandate I can imagine things are going to go the way of the 70s 80s when crime was out of hand. FDNY is preparing for a 20% reduction in workforce which mean closing stations and slower response time for emergencies. I also think its crazy that you can't go to events and restaurants unless vaccinated. I am thinking of all the out of state tourism NYC is losing by the day...

Thank god the fire fighter who is coming to save me is vaccinated though! I would absolutely ask to see his vaccine card before he pulled me from a burning building

Re: Anyone live or work in NYC?

I was at Carnegie Hall last night for a concert and took the LIRR in. Crowd levels were pretty low. They asked for proof of vaccination when you showed your ticket. We also ate indoors near Carnegie Hall and the restaurant asked for proof of vaccination, the waitress had special seating areas set up indoors and outdoors. All in all, I felt safe and thought everything so far in NYC seems organized. I am triple vaccinated (2 shots of Pfizer and got my booster last week). Most of NYC is vaccinated- all of DHs friends who are cops/firefighters are vaccinated.

Re: Anyone live or work in NYC?

I live in NYC. I'm vaccinated and have been in a concert and a comedy show, indoor dining, always showing my proof of vaccination. Everything in that area seems organize and normal.

But on the streets, I don't feel as safe now, and it took me a while to be comfortable with DS taking the subway to school. I read about a lot of situations in subway stations and in general, a friend and her 13 year old DD had to run several block when someone was chasing them. The homeless situation is out of control here.

We did go to a concert the other night in NYC and out to dinner. The restaurant is usually more crowded but it had a nice crowd - the outdoor dining section was full.

For the concert - it was really well organized, moreso then when we were screened for a concert and a hockey game in Nashville (they allowed for testing though as well - not only vaccination). The concert was pretty empty though overall.

The chaos is more in areas that you may not be in visiting the city or if there would be an emergency where you are. Many have decided to retire (even those not impacted) as they feel the city really doesn’t care about them. Many did vaccinate as per the mandate and now they are out sick because they had severe reactions already having Covid.

DHs firehouse was open but severely understaffed yesterday. The sanitation workers have been slowing down pick up (I’m sure most of NYC could care less about their garbage man’s vaccination status as they barely interact with them).

Ican see applying a mandate if there was an issue but there wasn’t, and now there is. I was worried about DH bringing Covid back to our home for a long time at the beginning of the pandemic as I have asthma. I’m more concerned for his safety now though when things aren’t operating appropriately. The new class has been in the academy since Wednesday so they are nowhere near ready to step in (they are all vaccinated as a condition of their employment). This is going to take awhile to fix…

There are a few restaurants that are taking a stand but with all the crazy measures I don’t know if they’ll keep strong. A friend is a NYC firefighter and tells me it’s not looking good for them, the mandates, people quitting/retiring, being understaffed, all these things are taking a toll on them. He’s against mandates like many others in his area.

Well better to not have your trash picked up at all then risk having your garbage collected by an unvaccinated dirty sanitation worker!
Priorities.
I only want my trash collected by fully vaccinated sanitation workers
When I call 911 I also requested only vaccinated cops to respond.

Lmao! Of course! Who would want a filthy unvaxxed person collecting their garbage or responding to an emergency? Also you need a vaxxed substitute teacher that probably doesn’t have a teaching license. Just people with a pulse to babysit. There is no spike among unvaxxed first rresponders right now. This is a joke. Big bird using this as a feather in his cap for his delusional run for governor next year.

Only plus to big bird is he has said he wouldn't mandate it for the kids to go to school

Then for that he has my vote (although I don’t trust him lol).

Adams plans to mandate it in NYC though.

Re: Anyone live or work in NYC?

We are coming to NY to see family for Christmas. DH and I talked last night about going to Radio City while we’re there. Then we remembered that our children are not vaccinated, and we wouldn’t be able to go. Oh well.

Our trip to NY will be short, and we are going to spend our money on a vacation to Florida.

So yes, NYC lost our tourist money. Probably many others, too.

Re: Anyone live or work in NYC?

NYC makes me so sad. What a difference in the last 5 years. My friends with college age kids don’t even want to send their kids there for college anymore which makes me sad because I went to school in NYC and had the best experience. Even my vaccinated friends don’t want to go there anymore, It’s filled with garbage, the aroma of people smoking weed, homeless and crime. Sadly, the nyc residents brought it upon themselves. Voting in DiBlasio not once but twice is almost incomprehensible to me.

Republican politicians don’t mandate vaccines....take action next week if it matters to you. Stop sticking with party lines that got us into this mess.

Re: Anyone live or work in NYC?

I was at a bar/restaurant on Thursday night. Place was crowded and they asked for vaccination. Service seemed fine, pre pandemic norms.

I find it hard to believe FDNY is saying they are short staffed due to vaccine mandates. There are tons of volunteer vaccinated Long Island firefighters who would love an FDNY paying job.

The NYC restaurant and entertainment mandate has been in effect for many weeks….I assume there are only a small handful of covid cases there now?

Yes but they have to take the test, go through the academic, pass investigations, that takes months.
It's not like you can just walk into a NYC firehouse, show your vaccine card and get a job.
Of course they'd be short staffed for awhile.

Yes and major spikes on Long Island because they aren't requiring it. Right?
From what I saw in Farmingdale tonight the bars and restaurants are PACKED. Spilling into the streets, shoulder to shoulder. No masks. No vaccine requirements. But that's ok because it isn't in the confines of NYC? Yes, yes, makes total sense.
