We are coming to NY to see family for Christmas. DH and I talked last night about going to Radio City while we’re there. Then we remembered that our children are not vaccinated, and we wouldn’t be able to go. Oh well.
Our trip to NY will be short, and we are going to spend our money on a vacation to Florida.
So yes, NYC lost our tourist money. Probably many others, too.
Kids 12 and under can attend without being vaccinated or providing a negative test. They just have to wear a mask.
Thanks for the info. Two of my kids are 12 and 15, and do not have the Covid vaccine.
I Always wondered...do they ask for a birth certificate at the door too? To prove they are under 12?
My DD is 11 but will be able to pass for under 12 for awhile.
Are they proofing kids now?
LOL, they don't ask anything...my daughter is 11, but looks like a teenager. We went out last week, to a fancy restaurant in queens... they didn't ask for proof of vaccine for any of us...and the waiter put a wine glass in front of my daughter and poured wine in it while I had my head turned. I said "ummm, she can't drink this!" and he said "oh, she's not of age?" and I said "She's 11, so no, she still has 10 years to go!" He laughed.

The reality is while these city jobs *may* be short staffed in the short term (and honestly I HIGHLY doubt those city workers will give up their pension and benefits unless they are able to retire) they won't be for long. City jobs pay well and have fantastic perks like free health insurance, pensions, annuity plans that guarantee high rates of return. There WILL be people to fill these jobs.
Yes they'll need to be trained in the case of fire, cop, sanitation but they will be and we'll keep it moving.

People are actually walking away. Things may get better than they are today in the short term but it's going to take a couple of years to recover from this. They were already short staffed before and the newest class in the fire academy (hired before the mandate) has been there less than a week.

Second week in a row with no garbage pick up.
this is being done on purpose by the sanitation workers. From what I understand 40% of NYC sanitation workers are not vaccinated and now not working. The vaccinated workers are standing by their unvaccinated peers by not picking up the slack. If they did, there would be no reason to worry about the unvaccinated workers returning to work- they wouldn't need them. I totally get it.
As a resident of NYC, this is just nuts to me.
I'm vaccinated, but I don't believe in these mandates, especially for people like sanitation workers- makes no sense. My daughter lost teachers in school and the subs are terrible....although I sort of do understand the mandate for teachers- they are trying to protect our kids.
I've been to many restaurants- some are following the rules and checking cards, but some are not.
I have a family member in Sanitation in NYC and you are 100% correct.
It's a slowdown job action.
There are actually underground lists of restaurants who don't check vaccine cards (or don't look too hard if you know what I mean- just enough to make it look like they are checking what you are flashing them )

Possibly but they had a real recruitment issue for years- before things got even worse in NYC - they were taking people with felonies on their records which they never did before and paying people with gift cards to take the test.
Now things are worse.

I don't know honestly. As long as they don't require too many college credits they are generally able to find people willing to work. I am not saying that the work conditions are good but I am saying that there are people willing to tolerate it.

DH was NYPD and this is 100% true.
You can have a felony- a certain class and probably within a certain period of time - like X many years ago- and still get on the NYPD
This started about 10 years back when they were having recruitment issues.
Beggars can't be choosers.
But the general public only hears what the media wants them to hear so they can go see their Broadway shows and feel all safe.
Talk to real cops- you'll hear the real truth about what goes on in the NYPD.
Nobody wants that job anymore unless they are desperate or already invested in it and working to get their pension and get the hell out

Cops are actually purchasing their own insurance polices for this.

When you see the mayor boasting about how mandates work just know those numbers are skewed. Once the exemptions are sorted through then there will be an accurate number of who will walk away. I am sure that the city is taking their time going through the exemption requests. So the deadline was today but not really. I am sure there are also plenty that will put in for retirement if they have the time.

Yes 6k filed for religious exemptions which buys them more time. DH estimates it will take 2-3 weeks to review but I think longer.
Not as many firemen filed religious exemptions and they sent some home who did.

His friends who are still on are miserable. Many left for Nassau and Suffolk if they were lucky enough to get on there- that is truly like winning the lottery as a cop.
Many moved to other states to be cops there.
Many went to even lower paying law enforcement like parks department and sheriffs- just to get out of NYPD.
It's a shame really.

There is a lot of chaos and disarray and at the end of the day... There will still be Covid, most likely at the same current rates...
Some of these first responders are coming up on their one year vaccine-iversary too, what happens then? Are they then considered unvaccinated? Are we going to be back at square one with this?

It IS a shame and Desantis is offering 5K to move to FL and work there. I am SURE many will go. Why not? Our taxes just went up (ridiculous as my pay didn't go up) and what are we getting for what we pay for?
