Re: No masks required in schools in Nassau County
Yes which they will probably still make them mandatory.
They should see how this is working in other states as I am pretty sure it has been awhile for them, no?

It's been working ok in some other states but many of them also have different quarantine rules.
My friend is outside Atlanta where there is no mask mandate and if you are a "close contact" you stay out of school for 3 days and then you can return masked if you have no symptoms.
If you are vaccinated, then you can stay regardless, and remain unmasked I believe.
In South Carolina where we are looking to move - they have similar quarantine rules to what we have in NY. They went full remote for a long time in the beginning of the year as they had a surge but I think things have been going well since then (prob since most people had it).
ETA - with the quarantine rules as they are today, I think it's better to leave masks on to keep kids in school right now. But it's nice that they have an option once this wave passes - or if quarantine rules change...

Ahh thanks for the info. I personally wear one now if I am near people in a store (pull it down when no one around) because so many people go out sick.

Re: No masks required in schools in Nassau County
Basically what he did was create a sh*t storm for BOE's. School districts are required to follow direction from NYS not the County executive. By making this an "executive order" he did nothing but create more problems because the uneducated are going to go to the school board meetings yelling and screaming at their BOE members when their hands are tied. I also think this is EXTREMELY untimely and he is just pandering to his base since there is a HUGE surge in schools right now.

Pretty sure there is no more of a surge than any other year with the flu and other illnesses. The media is pinpointing certain districts in their articles which have the largest amount of kids that attend. How about asking them to let us know how many kids were out sick years ago in the winter.
It is not a law, just a mandate so he can lift that as much as he would like to. Doesn’t mean the schools will comply. Many down south have though.

I am a teacher. I have way more kids sick this year than I have EVER had before. I also have more coworkers out and honestly my colleagues right now are overwhelmed because we are covering round the clock for everyone else. I say this as I am out as one of my own children have covid and one has strep. I still think this is a bad decision.

Well from what you said his EO means nothing because it's NYS that has to give the directive to the schools so it's not a bad decision- it's a non decision they'll be wearing masks for the next 20 years, don't worry.

I didn't say that people had to wear masks for the next 20 years. But great inferring!

Isn't that because people have to quarantine?

My oldest DS in high school is fully remote now through January. K-5 are in person FOR NOW... they just went back on Tuesday. Last night we got an email from the district that already after TWO DAYS of school there were 154 POSITIVE cases reported. This is more than every year. This isn't quarantine, these are positive cases.

Where I live masks have been optional in schools since October. Surprisingly everyone is not dead. Sorry for the sarcasm, but seriously, no dead kids or teachers, no going remote, life is going on.

Great inferring!
But seriously why is that? I don't understand. Does Covid behave differently in these magically places?
For the record I haven't gotten one of those WE HAVE A POSITVE COVID CASE IN THE SCHOOL today! letters all week. Maybe they just gave up and said fuk it

Yes which they will probably still make them mandatory.
They should see how this is working in other states as I am pretty sure it has been awhile for them, no?
I’m in Texas and we’ve had no masks, no contact tracing and no quarantines since school started in August.

what is it like to have a normal life? To have your kids have normal school years? I'm so jealous. My DD is texting me right now from the bus saying- are we going virtual? I said no, I hadn't heard that. She said well all the teachers said to take our stuff home because we might have a snow day tomorrow. I said yes it might snow She is like- I'm scared that if we go virtual for the snow tomorrow we will never go back. I'm scared of going virtual.
Note- she is not scared of getting Covid, she's scared of having to do remote school ever again.
I'm so sick that my child's formative school years are this shit show.

So sad and these teachers love it so they can make over $100,000 to teach at home in their pajamas.

I wholeheartedly agree! The BOE meeting was adjourned after 10 minutes because of some attendees refusal to mask. That means that the community does not get to ask for information or interact with the BOE. This was right after an incident where there was a social media post about gun violence and a student was seen browsing guns on a school computer.

Re: No masks required in schools in Nassau County
It means absolutely nothing.
If a district refuses to listen New York State will hold funding from them Which I’m pretty sure most school districts cannot afford.
Again I get it I think it’s time for these things to be optional but he really did nothing but get parents mad at the school boards for some thing they have no control over because they will lose funds and I’m sure most parents will not understand that.

I agree with you and will gladly mask my kid if it means she can go to school in person.
But that last caveat is the problem. We’ve spent nearly TWO YEARS with inadequate education and now we are again being threatened with remote school. We mask, we test, we vaccinate and still, we’re told we might be remote. Again. So I ask, what else is it you people want from us? What else on God’s green earth will make schools function again?
