Homework grade - question
I think you are getting two different stories here and I would ask to speak to the teacher, not just email. I do not think the teacher would have marked it incomplete if it was truly one label. Nor do I think they would say your child worked all period on the missing parts if it was not true. I would ask for the class guidelines to see what her policies are on homework and grading so everyone is aware.

Thanks everyone!
Since then, he's gotten full credit for everything, as he was in the beginning of the year.
I am going to wait until the next time this happens and then I will reach out to her, I do believe him that it was just one label as he was really upset by this and I have heard she's quite tough and not many like her so this is probably why!

I am glad it was resolved favorably. My son is in 10th grade. For an English class assignment instead of using double quote marks he fat fingered and put a single quote mark to end a quote. The teacher wrote a nasty email home and told him he was getting 20% off for it and it was not recoverable. He was so upset. I urged him to speak with the teacher. She finally relented, but other kids had come up to him to ask why the teacher hated him so much unjustly. At back to school night I spoke with the teacher. She is treating him better, but she has a deservedly bad reputation.

having just encountered this issue for my own child, I 100% believe that there are some teachers who are so far up themselves that they do grade this way.

OMG! 20% off for a typo?! That's ridiculous! I could see 2 points off, but that's it! It's like the teacher is purposely making things harder than they need to be!

Unfortunately I think this is a common problem for boys. I think that there are a lot of teachers who are just not cut out for dealing with young teenage boys.

Perhaps the goal is to make kids hate school and have anxiety about every little thing they do. If so, then Bravo!
In the real word it's ok to make mistakes. And typos.
Some people need to get a grip. OCD is a disorder, not something to promote.

While I see the issue is resolved, grading like this is honestly a bigger issue than just this one assignment. Grading in this manner is punitive and does not assess students knowledge or skill level. Grading should be done to assess a student’s ability to meet standards set forth by the curriculum. I strongly believe this from a pedagogical sense. Having such rigid criteria can have big effects on college admissions and scholarships. I recommend you encourage your BOE and admin to read grading for equity. It has been really life changing for me and my students. While I don’t do everything in the book, it has allowed my students to develop a great growth mindset.

While I think 20% is ridiculous, at that age, they start learning MLA/APA and citing sources. That could have been part of the assignment. It is just getting them prepped for university.
I don’t think it has anything to do with “teenage boys.”
