Younger people and remote jobs
I belong to a few Facebook job search groups, and they are constantly bombarded with people looking for remote only work. I notice the majority of them are under the age of 28ish. I know this is likely a result of the pandemic, but it seems people don't want to work in person at all anymore! My company has a hard time finding recent graduates to take an in person position. It's crazy how things have shifted.

Re: Younger people and remote jobs
With the amount of huge layoffs going on nationwide, they may not be able to be so choosy about where they work anymore. The job market is getting TIGHT

Re: Younger people and remote jobs
Many are just lazy and don't want a set time to get up and work and have to be in an office setting to do so.
I know a few "young adults" who think us older people just have settled and they don't want the type of life that is stable with a routine. You know, like being an adult.

It AMAZES me how people ASSUME just because people work remote that they are lazy. I am now 100% fully remote, which I love but work longer hours than if I was in an office. Thise extra hours not spent commuting back and forth are usually used to work now instead.
Even working remotely I have a set routine, get up, get ready, get dressed just like I would if I was going into the office.

Re: Younger people and remote jobs
To me it makes absolutely no sense why an employer would require an employee to come in if they could do their job just as efficiently at home. The savings on rent alone is worth is. Not to mention you can typically pay people less because they don't have commuting costs and can often live in a place where the cost of living is cheaper than where the office is located. I work from home and have for over 5 years. I'd have a hard time going back to an office.
When I was younger though I am not sure I would have wanted to work from home. I think that would have been extremely isolating. Also, in the early stages of your career, while you are still learning, I think that in person training is way better than remote. I made so many good friends and had so much fun working in an office environment all through my 20s but now that I am old I'd rather be home with my kids, have no interest in making new friends and don't want to waste time commuting.

I love it now though! I walk every morning with a friend for an hour. then I meet friends for lunch once or twice a week. Also my husband is home too so there's pros and cons to that! Not having to sit on a train for a half hour every morning then deal with the subway....

Yeah I don't love any kind of commute and working from home for 3 years has really destroyed my mental health and given me social anxiety so honestly I can probably never go back to working in person either. But I'm upset that being trapped at home, has caused me to become a different person and made me not really care about advancing my career anymore. I'm just disgusted.

I think employers are going to have a harder time getting younger generations to come into the office and if they are going to force they are going to have to start paying out more. Dh is in the office 4 days a week and they are having a hard time attracting quality staff because noone wants to come in full time and the company thinks they can still pay pre-pandemic wages.
Why the hell would they want to come into the office when you can sit at home on your ass making money from social media?

I work hybrid so I am remote a few times a week. I also have worked more at home than going in to the office but I know many that don't and take advantage of the working from home. We can't do our work at anytime and need to get it done the same day but other jobs you don't need to do that.

That is why I love the hybrid. I can still be home a few times a week to get things done that I would otherwise have had to do on the weekends. I also get to get out and converse with coworkers (whom I enjoy so I know that makes a big difference) and have breakfast and lunch and snack without a dog begging me for. lol.
Also at home they don't get that I am working. My downtimes they think I do nothing and don't get that when I get busy, I need the quiet and just can't get it when you have to work around others.

I definitely think that there are a bunch of dreamers in the younger generation, thinking they can just be an influencer and make boatloads. However, our family friends' daughter wants to major in social media marketing in college and her parent's are so dismissive of it. But honestly it's not much different than one of us wanting to major in advertising. Sometimes as old people I think that we forget that the world is a completely different place than when we were younger.

Social media marketing is a big field right now, actually. It's a probably a great field to get into too since all companies are using social media to market now a days. Totally not the same as being an "influencer"

Re: Younger people and remote jobs
I loved and hated working from home. But I’m a teacher.
I have a new job and work for the armed forces. I love seeing my soldiers every day!
The part I don’t like is in between quarters when I am forced to come to work and not teach. There isn’t much to do.

When I was younger though I am not sure I would have wanted to work from home. I think that would have been extremely isolating. .
It is. And depressing.
My nephew is 24. Graduated college in 2020 and has never worked in person. He does a great job and meets his metrics, so his employer does not force him to come in. But he is totally isolated (moved out on his own). He has even stopped coming over when we invite him for dinner or whatever. It worries my brother. He has potential but I think this will definitely effect his career progression but he doesn't get that. He has zero interest in socializing with his coworkers, no matter how much we tell him to meet up with them when they invite him.

I can totally see that. Look, of course we can all do our jobs from home. Of course we don't "need" to be in an office. But I see a total difference in myself since being sent to work from my bedroom permannetly.
I have to go to an in person meeting next week for 2 days in a row and I'm sweating about it. I'm freaking out thinking about having to find an appropriate outfit(even though I have 2 closets full of clothes) having to commute 2 days in a row in traffic, having to sit for hours in a meeting when my attention span is now shitt, having to socialize. I feel like I've lost critical coping and social skills because I haven't had to leave my house to work in 3 years. I've always had anxiety to some extent but I had no choice so I worked through it and was able to control it. Now, it's crippling

Re: Younger people and remote jobs
I find the dialog around this to be very interesting. Prior to the pandemic, our ED refused to let people work from home. He was convinced a handful (and he had specific people in mind) would take advantage - so he just refused all requests, no matter the circumstances.
Fast forward to 2020, and the absolute need to work remotely. It took us about 8 weeks to get the infrastructure together to work remotely. Then we discovered we were considered essential, and people had to come in. We went into contract negotiations with remote work a big thing on the bargaining table, and the (now new) ED flatly refused to agree to a contract provision for a permanent work from home provision. Privately she told me the reasons were the same as the previous ED - one bad apple spoils it for everyone. The difference was she now had proof that the suspicions surrounding the people they "thought" would goof off and take advantage actually came to fruition. Not one single person that was presumed to be lazy turned out to be a good worker from home. Each and every one of them proved that the fears were 100% justified.

Exactly.. I had no choice, but to go remote 100% if I wanted to stay with my company. We all went remote during the pandemic and our office buidling was sold. I work more hours now and I'm always connected. Now that I've been working remote for 3 years.. I could never imagine going into an office. Total different mindset.

Younger people and remote jobs
My DH and i have been working at home for over 30 years by choice. Especially my husband he hates to work with anyone but himself. People suck so we are happy to not go in an office and put on a fake smile everyday. I think young people just want that dream job at home for the same reason.
