Is 4 months old too young to cry it out or use the ferber method? Any ideas on how to get my son to sleep in the co-sleeper rather than his swing.

He is sleeping through the night (in the swing)and I'm afraid to change that but my Dr. says to let him cry it out. Haven't tried it yet.

Re: CIO

I started with Talia at 4 months. Some will say it is a little early, but in our case we had tremendous success. I think it all depends on the baby.

Re: CIO

Some people will say it's too young, but we started at about 4 months. We wouldn't let him cry for long at first and then gradually increased it. We still rock him to sleep, but once he's in his crib if he wakes up we will let him cry for up to 20 minutes before going in the room. He has usually stopped by then, or you can tell he's about to so we just let him be.

I personally think it's too young. My daughter would still wake up for feedings until a little over 6 months. I mean how do you a 4 month old isn't hungry or have a need that needs to be met. That's just how I feel though if you're comfortable doing it then give it a try. Maybe the transition to the crib will go better than you think.

Our ped said we could start at 4 months but I couldn't do it until 9 months. I wish I had done it sooner. She is such a great sleeper now.Chat Icon

I would suggest waiting until the baby has slept through the night a few times to rule out that the waking is for hunger. Luca started sleeping through the night after he was getting cereal for dinner. After he did that a few nights we knew he was no longer hungry through the night and if he woke it was just because he wanted to be rocked back to bed.

I agree. Molly is 5 months and goes 12-13 hours without eating at night. When she wakes up, she doesn;t even want her bottle right away...likes to wake up for a little while. So once she started doing that, I knew that she did not need to eat during the night and her waking up in the middle of the night could be solved without a nighttime feeding. I would try it out with small increments of crying and see how baby responds. After a while you will be able to differentiate the cry that says they will successfully go back to sleep or the all out "you better come and get me" cry.

Re: CIO

I waited until DD was five months because she was refusing the bottle and was barely eating while I was at work so I felt she still needed the night feedings, but my pediatrician's nurse said 4 mos is fine.

Re: CIO

There's no right answer for every 4 month old, as I see it. It all depends on the baby. At that age, with Ava, I would have done CIO had we needed to. It wasn't until recently that we really needed to do it at like 8.5 months. Had we needed to at 4 months, I would have.
