HELP I HAVE A DEMO LESSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all,

Okay, so its 3rd grade, reading room, only 5 students. The lesson needs to be on inferencing with pictures. The students are on a second grade level.

Can anyone help???

i would find find excitign images online (google images) etc. You could people's expressions, action shots, etc. then scaffold it with them with questions and have them make prediciotns on what they think is going on in the picture or why the person looks the way they do.

then you can have the students write their OWN story on one of the pictures OR if you take a picture from a news article (i like timeforkids.com ) After they've inferred using the pictures, have them read the article? were they right or wrong? how does the picture support the article? how does the article support the picture? etc.

Oh I just did a lesson with my self-contained class on inferencing on the 2nd- 3rd grade level.

I first gave them a definition of inferences.

We then read the book Where The Wild Things Are, I paused and we made inferences based on the "clues" as we read.

Then I photocopied some photographs for them and we made inferences about what was going on. For example there was a man wearing shorts- that was our clue, so our inference was "It must be warm weather." We did a couple together on one picture, and then they worked in partners on another photo and made their own inferences. We then shared.

It was a great lesson. I had gotten out of a read aloud teacher guide to teaching reading. I forgot who it is written by.

First,

I have used Tight Times for inferencing.
Also, Charlie Anderson. Two good picture books.

I like the idea of the photographs getting tied into your modeling of inferencing as well.

sometimes i do a table like graphic organizer for inferencing/conclusions that basically works out to "text evidence" +"prior knowledge" = "my inference"

sometimes this helps, but not with every kid, sometimes it just confuses them more.

(i used it in a demo lesson for 4th grade and got the job a few years ago, but i used a time for kids article. i introduced the idea by scanning the text and then modeling an inference based on the title and picture, then started reading. modeled one more, then while reading had them do a think pair share, and then do one independently.

during independent reading, i had them practce with their just right book.

I also love the harris burdick book by chris van allsburg for this, it really gets their creativity going.

the following week, the same activity was in centers as a reinforcement.

Jan Brett is a great author for 2nd grade level.

Annie and the Wild Animals has a great two page picture of all the animals in the book.

Jan Brett also has a TON of ideas on her website.
