Effacement vs. Dilation
Here comes a silly question...
Can you be effaced and not dilated? Sorry for the silly question but last night when I was at the hospital the nurse said I am 60% effaced and not dilated 
What is the difference between the two?

effaced I believe is the cervix thinning out... while dilation is it opening up. you need to be both 100% effaced and dilated 10cm prior to pushing...

yup... and i am pretty sure you won't start dilating until you are 90-100% effaced.

yup... and i am pretty sure you won't start dilating until you are 90-100% effaced.
Oh geez, if that's the case at the rate I'm going I will be induced Monday!

not true!! you can be 50% effaced and not dilated at all and go tonight! i bet you go this weekend

Really?????????? I didn't know that!!! Your giving me hope, thank you and I hope your right!!!!  
I just figure some people take weeks to dilate from 1-5 and here I am at 0 cm dilating yet 60% effaced and 3 days past my DD.

I'll give you a different scenario: In the case of pre-term labor it is more reassuring to be a little dilated but have a thick cervix vs. not dialted at all and have a cervix that is completely thinned out.
The pressure of a baby's head can dilate a thin cervix much quicker than a thick one.
Let me give you an example. Think of your cervix as a thick piece of cardboard. Let's say you're trying to put your fist through it (baby's head). Would it be easier to dig your way through if the cardboard was saturated with water (thin cervix) vs. completely dry?
Ok, weird example but that's all I can think of at 11pm.

That makes complete sense and gives me a lot more hope after seeing both your posts.
Thanks so much for making me feel bette, I was starting to feel like a failure being my body isn't doing what it's suppose to.

LB, I don't think that's true. Because at my last internal (on Monday) I was 40% effaced and 1cm dilated.
