Shortness of breath after surgery?

I had hernia surgery Tuesday. I have been trying to get up and walk around as often as possible but I am in a lot of pain. I notice after laying down for a while and trying to get up I get a shortness or breath and weird feeling in my chest (almost like when you have a chest cold or something). after a couple of minutes of walking around I feel better. I left a message with my dr b/c I know one of the complications w/anesthesia is pneumonia but I can't imagine I developed that. I have never had surgery before so i dont even have anything to compare to.

Re: Shortness of breath after surgery?

I had laproscopic surgery around this time last year and yes - I found it hard to breathe for a while afterwards. I think it might be from the gas they pump into you and how that might still be in your system putting pressure on your lungs. Does that make sense?

I hope you are on the mend and continue to feel better each day!

Yes...it does. I spoke to my friend who was a nurse and she told me I should be getting upa nd walking around every so often (which I have been trying to do) and holding the pillow against my stomach and coughing every so often to "exercise" my lungs since I am more sedentary than usual. Of course the hypochondriac I am was thinking I had psneumonia or a blood clot in my lungChat Icon Chat Icon

yes..you need to get up as much as possible. I had an intestinal resection and I felt like I was 90 years old for at least 3 weeks. I made sure I got up and walked and didn't stay in bed. I know it hurts but hopefully they gave you some pain meds. I was taking 3 tylenol every 3 hours or so when I got home.

I hope you feel better soon.
