Do you work out before or after you eat breakfast?

It really depends. If I am in a rush, I will skip breakfast (even though I know it is best to have it) and run. If I have some time, I will eat breakfast, wait an hour and then go on my run.

Your workout is more effective if you eat first. If you're body is still fasting from the night before, if it less willing to give up those calories. I often have to send clients home because they can't handle their workouts when they haven't eaten breakfast. You should defintely, without question, eat something before you workout in the morning.

My gym is at work and I have an hour train ride to get there. I'll usually have half a granola bar (~50 calories) on the train to get me through it all.

After, unless I will be running for 60+ minutes. If I am going for a long run I will eat a half of english muffin, half banana and a 5 oz of gatorade.
If you eat after you should eat about 200 calories within the first hour of completing your workout.
