Just diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes!

Hey everyone :) Tuesday night I was in the ER with crazy high blood glucose levels. It was 877 and I found out today my HgA1c was 13% (which means for the last 3 months my blood sugar has been extremely high). I was lucky enough to get a doctors visit right away. Today they started me on long-acting and short-acting insulin today. (Levemir which is like Lantus and Novolog). They are thinking it's more Type 1 than Type 2 but I have to do more testing for c-peptide and antibodies. I was ignoring a lot of obvious signs (thirst,peeing,weight loss,etc) for a long time now. I'll most likely have to be on insulin the rest of my life and really have to change my lifestyle. I'm in good spirits and I guess I feel more confident about the whole thing because I am in the medical field.

I was wondering if there are other girls who are diabetic. I have all sought of questions.

Oh Peacock...I'm so sorry. My DH is Type 1. He was diagnosed when he was 8 & has been on the pump for 10 years I believe.

I've been with him when he had crazy high numbers like that...scary! I'm glad you are ok & they made a diagnosis.

I have been a type 1 diabetic for 25 years (I am 35 now). for the last 6 years I have been on a pump - best thing I ever did for my health. for the last 2 years I have been on CGSM (continuous glucose sensor monitors). Thy have been awesome - right now this is all for the future - you just need to get your numbers down. There are a few of us here. any questions, I am certain that one of us, if not all of us can answer them for you. Typically, type 1 diabetics know more than the doctors! The first couple of months just figure out how food affects your sugar, your carbs/insulin ratio, etc. FM me any time - I will be more than happy to answer any questions.

ETA: i have no complications, knock on wood, and have lived and continue to live a great life - so will you!

I have been Diabetic for over 20 years. I am also 5 months PG. I take a minimum of 5 shots of insulin a day (long and short). I go to a great Endo i n Great Neck (if you are looking for one). FM me if you have any questions or if you just need to talk.
Diabetes is not the end of the world. You can and will live a normal life.

I was diagnosed at 13, and I'll be 37 in a few months. So far, no complications.

In High School, I was still in wrestling, soccer, track, two week-long Boy Scout camps. Now, I'm in karate for 8 years (with some extremely intense classes, and competitions).

I have my eyes checked once a year, and routine checkups, etc.

Once you get used to it, it's more of an annoyance than a "disease", IMO. I don't consider it a disease, and I don't let others treat me like I'm dying or anything. If anything, it kind of forces you to live healthier, eat better, exercise more, etc.

Several coworkers talk to me about diabetes because their DC have friends who were diagnosed recently. My primary piece of advice (that nobody ever told me, BTW... ) was that you can live a very long and healthy life, as long as you are careful.
