Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
Well.. i know you guys mean well but man you made me feel like a complete MORON about sleeping time.
Im not TRYING to abuse or torture my child but honestly i must be screwing up somehow.
My 'routine' if you will ... is home, snack, short nap, play, dinner, bath (if it is the right night), bottle...
Here's where it gets hairy. She'll not let us read her book, she'll try to eat it and gets angry if we dont let her have it.
Putting her down by herself in the crib is the same. We do NOT do COI.
If im lucky she'll lay with me on the floor (i like the cuddle time) or she'll go head first into her pillow on the floor.
She rolls around for about 10mins then falls asleep. Her 'rolling' around means literally rolling all over the living room floor, which is a neat feat actually.
We thought she could roll around in her crib.... nope not happening. If we try this its like having to start all over again an hour later without the benefit of the bath or bottle.
Mostly Id say she does NOT like to be rocked to sleep or held.
She does NOT rub her eyes or whine when she's sleepy. She just goes to sleep.
Actually another LIF mom has seen my kiddo do this lil trick of passing out on a whim.
Once she's asleep we take her to bed.
Odd side note, if I let her watch youtube vid of "when Im 64" (a song i used to sing to her when she was super little) she'll actually fall asleep in my arms.
...
So yeah... I didnt realize it was such a BIG DEAL that this whole thing starts around 8pm and ends about 9pm (or lets say never later than 9:45)
But it seems from the replies i got, that I am way off base.
My kiddo sleeps until we wake her up for daycare, or she did until last month so so, when walking makes her stay up longer, if that makes sense.
She doesn't care about light, sound, motion.. NOTHING. Once she's asleep, she's asleep. That goes for naps and overnights. She wakes up when she's cold, hungry, can't find her paci, wet or just awake.
She used to do two naps at daycare and one when she got home. Lately she's been only getting one nap at daycare and then one nap at home.
So yesterday she napped once at daycare and crashed at home around 7pm for a 12hour nap.
I'd love to see the written rule where a kid falling asleep on their own past 8pm is such a horrific thing.. but until such rule is set in stone.. I'll just try to do better
So.. tell me.. how do YOU put your child 'down' to sleep?

Hey whatever works for you! Every child is different and if this is working for your DD and your family then what is the harm?
We put DD to sleep at 7pm every night. It has been like this for as long as I can remember- she is 14 months. She wont let us read to her either. Basically, she gets into her PJs, we give her her vitamins, then go into her room, shut her lights out and give her a bottle of milk on the glider. Sometimes once she is finished with her bottle she will cuddle with me, sometimes she wants to go right into the crib. I put her down right on her puppy dog, she cuddles up with it, and then she is usually out cold within a few minutes.

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
Dinner Bath sometimes brush teeth 3 books songs while rocking in a chair. Put her down.
When she was one books and songs took 30 minutes or so and she would drink from her cup while reading then brush her teeth.
Now that she is 2 we read and sing songs in less than 15 minutes and she often asks for her bed.
I always make sure that her last nap of the day is done at least 3 hrs before bedtime.
She goes down between 7 and 8 and has to be woken up at 7:15 or sleeps to 7:30 or so if its a weekend. When she was one she would sleep until 9 or 10 am .

Dinner Bath (every night) Bottle Bed
Sometimes I will read to him after I get him in his PJ's but he is usually melting down by then so we do books during the day I give him the bottle in his room with the lights out and the sound machine on. He has his lovey with him and he is either very drowsy or alseep after the bottle. Sometimes he will cry for a minute or fuss when he sees me leave the room, but generally he is out within a few minutes. And he is in bed for the night between 6:30-7:30 depending on his naps during the day.
ETA- he sleeps until 7am.

We usually don't eat at the same time I feed DS. He eats around 5/5:30. He either gets leftovers from the night before or I make something for him. If you want to eat at the same time, maybe try some crock pot meals? Then they will be pretty much done when you get home.

C'mon, no one said this AT ALL.
Honestly, I firmly believe the adage "sleep begets sleep" and she probably slept so well b/c she went down when she was just tired enough and not overtired.
She probably does some of the things that she does b/c she is tired, including waking up too early and only taking one nap.
I agree with the PP that if this works for you, then keep on doing it, no one said you are harming your child at all.
Listen, my own kid goes to bed at 9.30pm 5 nights a week, but he is older and I am currently a SAHM, so he doesn't need be woken up. And truthfully, I think he would probably sleep better (later in the am and take a better nap if he could go to bed earlier...our routine doesn't allow it right now with my DH's work schedule)
Obviously, you need to do what works for your family, don't let anyone on here make you feel differntly if you feel it works

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
My son just turned 9 months I pick Alex up from the sitter around 4-430 the latest; and we are home by 5 Sometimes he falls asleep in the car, but even if he does he usually wakes up by the time we get home or soon after. We play until about 6 This includes on the floor with his toys in the living room or in his room
6:00 i give him dinner; earlier if I think he's hungry. Finish around 6 or 630; depending upon when we started. then play for another 30 minutes or so then bath; no later than 7 Pj's , bottle and in his crib by 730 Sometimes he cries (which only started around a month ago) IF he cries, its all of maybe 3 minutes; then he is out. he usually sleeps from 730pm-6:30 am

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
We come home from daycare between 5 and 530, play a little bit, dinner by 630, then bath, then nursing (or those two in reverse depending on when she eats dinner), then a story, then bed. She is asleep by 730. We used to do nursing last but switched it up when she learned to fall asleep on her own (around 6 mos).
When she was little she'd go to bed at 830 or 9 and (before she was eating solids) she would sit in her swing while we ate. Now we put her to bed and then eat afterwards.
Bedtime in our house has gotten earlier as she gets older but she has dictated that - she is more and more active during the day and she just gets too tired to stay up. If you're on a later schedule and it works for you, who cares what anyone else thinks?

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
My DD has dinner at about 5, playtime (which is usually crawling around after her like mad-woman lol), bath then bedtime which is between 7 and 715. For ME and MY DD (because every child is different and no ones schedule is RIGHT), the most important thing is routine.
So silly, but after she gets her jammies on, I play this little Giraffe toy for her that sings and dances. After that song is over, lights go off, binky in, I hold her for a few minutes talking to her ' Time for ni-night G' 'I love you' 'See you in the morning'.
Then I put her in the crib, turn her on the side (YES SHE SLEEPS ON HER SIDE for anyone who wants to flame me) place her blanket on her and go.
Sure there are times when before I get to her door she stands up and starts whining. I DID do CIO with my DD and it def worked, but I learned the difference between not wanting to go to sleep and genuinely just not being tired yet.
The youtube song, can you get it on a cd and play it in her room for her? Even if it means sitting with her and her falling asleep and then you transfer her to crib. Yes it would be wonderful if you could put her in her crib awake, walk out and then she sleeps until the next morning. Not reality for some.
I didn't see your original post, but are you able to try to start things off earlier? If you cant, you cant. But maybe she is overtired by like 830? I assumed that if DD goes down at 7 normally, that if we were out and got home late, she would go down even easier... WRONG-O! She was a lunatic lol.
You said that she came home from daycare yest and slept 12 hours through the night.. maybe this will continue for you and be her new routine. Wish you the best!

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
We eat dinner at 6 or 6:30. (During the week, we are all finally home at 5:30 so it is a little quick but that's the way it works for us). After dinner we play. Then, at 7:30, we start preparing for bedtime. Clean up, get towel for bath, pajamas, and her room set up (nightlight, sound machine, etc.). Around 7:45, I give her a bath, then hand her off to Tom who puts her in her pajamas and brings her upstairs to read her her stories (sidenote...for a few months, she refused to let us read the books to her at night, so I would hold her as she flipped through them herself. Not worth the fight to force her to listen to a story, IMO). After the stories, she is placed in her crib with her blanket and stuffed animals in their proper positions.....and then it's sleepytime. That's all over by 8:15 usually (Tom is actually closing her door right now as I type this) and she's asleep shortly after. No crying, she just knows it's time. And she'll wake up around 8 or 9 the next morning....unless it's a weekday when she's woken up at 7:30
One other thing - we don't wait until she acts tired. Bedtime is always the same time. She has no say in that.

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
This year I have the luxury of having both my dh and I home by 5 so we can make an earlier dinner time. But I really like having family dinners and we have always eaten together (within reason-sometimes my dh does work nights) Some years we have had to have dinner at 6:30 or so in order to eat together than obviously bedtime can't be 7, but then I was lucky enough to be able to allow a late wake up time in am as well. I would also make sure they were bathed and in pjs before dinner on later nights.
I realize some people are not able to do that and I do not judge anyone for choosing a later bed time for their dc.
I do think babies need more sleep. Is there anyway your dc could get an extra nap at daycare? I know my baby would never go down easily if she just had a nap within two hours, even if it was short.
YOu have to do what works for you and your baby

Dinner 6pm Bath after 645 bottle 7pm in crib awake and out within 10 minutes...
I had to do serious sleep training as I was way off base and my DD was killing me!!!!! I was up half the nights and her naps were awful..she is still a challenge with naps but i put her down same time each day 9am and 130 pm and she takes it, if not, she will play in the crib during the time...not the easier thing i have ever had to learn to do but she is a new baby:)

Since DD was 6 weeks old we have had the same routine (she will be 2 next month).
Bath Bottle Book Bed
Honestly, if she took a 12 hour "nap" at 7 pm, I think that's the time she wants to go to bed at night. I didn't read the other posts, so I'm only going by what you have here, but it sounds like you might be keeping her up too late and she's overtired and fighting sleep.

DD is a little over a year.
Her routine is dinner, bath, bottle bed.
Her bath starts anywhere from 6-630 (depending on when she woke up from afternoon nap) and she is in her crib by 7 the latest.
Some nights she cries, but I don't pick her up. She gets one "comfort" visit and then I leave and never go back!

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
DD is 9 months old and bedtime has been a low-level nightmare for us since the summer time. We live in a railroad apartment, so her nursery has no windows or a/c. We put her in the PNP in our bedroom for the summer and now she refuses the crib. We also do not CIO. She USED to be a great sleeper. Anyway, tis is how our routine goes.
Dinner:Around 6PM Bath: Around 6:30 Change into PJs around 6:45. Cuddle with her in our bed until she falls asleep...she's a thrasher and it takes her about 30 minutes to fall asleep. After she is asleep, we transfer her to the PNP where sometimes the STTN and other times she wakes up at all different times.
Sigh.

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
DD is 20 months but has had the same routine since she was 12 months.
5pm we come home from daycare. She plays for about an hour and then I feed her dinner at 6-615. After dinner she takes a bath and then from 7-8 watches Diego and Dora while my DH and I eat. She gets a sippy of milk while watching Diego. At 8 she brushes her teeth and then we go into her room. We usually sing a song or read a book. I put her in her crib, kiss her goodnight and leave the room. She is usually asleep by 8:30 at the latest. She usually wakes up around 7:30 in the morning.
Sometimes she becomes really cranky around 7pm. Usually this means she is tired and I will start our routine earlier so she winds up in her crib around 745.

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
I didn't see your other post so I am confused - what was everyone giving you a problem with? The fact that your DD goes to bed past 8pm? Why is that a problem? My DS is 2 now but has ALWAYS gone to sleep way after 8pm. No matter what I would do he would NEVER go to sleep that early. I don't see why you are such a bad parent if your kid has a later bedtime schedule? Am I missing something?
ETA: DS's routine has been the same since he was 10 months old - except now he has milk out of a cup instead of a bottle.
Dinner Play for about 20 minutes or so Bath Milk Stories, PJ's etc. Crib - he usually talks and plays in his crib for about 10 min and then falls asleep - sometimes quicker - sometimes longer.

Re: Spinoff to my kiddo sleeping: so how do YOU put your 1yr old to sleep (long)
my DS , One year old is VERY much like your DD except, he rolls around on our bed to go to sleep. it was an HOUR ordeal everynight.but the reason We HAD to stop was because it was taking longer, he wouldn't transfer to his crib, and he would pummel me while I was laying with him kick, punch, hit , pull hair. soooo annoying. naps too. one day I got reallly fed up and I did CIO. now I give him his bottle , tell him nap nap, nap nap, let him turn his fan on, and put him right in his bed with his Seahorse. he cries every time for a few seconds (till I walk out of theroom) then He knows , that's it bedtime buddy.
Now when daddy is around he KNOWS daddy will lay down w/ him so he is a terror!
there is nothing wrong w the way you put your little one to sleep. every one criticized me since he was 8 weeks telling me to let him cry. now he is old enough, I don't feel bad about it. I felt guiltly when he was so little. do what works best for you and baby!
ETS he give us a hard time if we put him down at 8 so we pushed his bed time back to 830-9 PM sometimes a little later. he doesn't have a rock SOLID time bc sometimes DH gets home late and would like to see his kid.

No one was giving her a "problem".
The OP posted that her DD took a 12 hour nap from 7pm-7am and it was mentioned that she may be missing a window where her DD may sleep better if put to bed then.
No one said ANYTHING about the OP being a bad parent!! In all the time on this board I've NEVER seen anyone call another parent a bad parent, especially over something like THIS
