I don't understand why this is an argument? We have spent almost a trillion dollars, yes, a TRILLION dollars on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why aren't people getting up in arms about that? Think of how many people we could have covered with that money?

Slightly off topic, but I've heard this argument a lot, and I have to wonder if people just don't understand that one thing has absolutely nothing to do with the other. The federal defense budget and the healthcare budget do not intermingle. Even if we pulled all the troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan tomorrow, yes, a lot of money would be freed up, but it would not likely be eligible for transfer to healthcare costs.

I think this argument is brought up bc so much $$$ is being used to fight these wars....OUR tax $$$ (which everyone comes back to in regards to health care)

I get that the two budgets are seperate.

BUT I also see the point that is being argued...it infuriates people to think of all the $$ and more importantlly lives we have lost Chat Icon

To think if all that money was put toward healthcare....

I understand the sentiment, for sure. And it would definitely be nice IF all that money COULD be put towards healthcare instead! But the fact that it's an impossibility makes the argument invalid. To say "think of how many people could have been covered with that money" tugs on the heartstrings - but in reality, no one's healthcare ever could have been covered with that specific money.

Like I said, I've been hearing it a lot lately (not just on here), so I think some people really don't understand that although all the money comes from the same place (our taxes), there are very strict rules regarding budgeting and the use of federal funds, so money from one departmental budget can't just be shifted around to pay for something else.

Best way to make sure folks have health insurance is to keep people working.

I'm all for a law that says you must enroll in the health plan offered at work unless covered by a spouse. None of this opting out because you want to spend the $100 a month on something else.

and what happens when the health plan offered is either unaffordable or stinks? That's where we are now- the good one is $1400 a month OOP and the one we have that stinks is $500 OOP with a super duper high deductible b/f we see ANY benefits that we really can't afford.

Stinks and unaffordable are based on opinion.

I would argue that some plan is better than nothing and ask you what is more unaffordable - $100 amonth towards full coverage or having NONE

My employer offers a top package for $100 a month - fricken deal of the century if you ask me

What are you spending $1400 OOP for?
is this private coverage or through work?

If you have to shell out $1400 a month, I don't think it's an opinion to say that it's unaffordable- I think even without knowing the OP's $$ situation many of us would accept that as fact. Most middle class families with kids would find that unaffordable- at least I know my family would and we have a pretty good income between the two of us.

How many people pay $1400 a month for their health coverage through work?

I'm guessing less than 0.005%

But I think the point being made is that a lot of people do not have coverage through work. So in that case, you need to pay around $1400 a month. I have no doubt this number is accurate. When I looked into COBRA 10 years ago, it would have cost me $600 monthly for a plan for one person, that included no dental or optical. Since spending $600 a month would have put me in debt quickly, I chose not to have coverage for a short time and too a free plan through my university that really covered nothing except emergency hospital visits. During this time, I did need to see a specialist once, and he was only too happy to negotiate a lower rate for the office visit and not deal with the private insurance company nonsense.

So I guess I was one of those irresponsible individuals who did not cover myself when I could have--crazy me, I decided it made more sense to pay my bills and live within my means.

Count your blessings that you have a great plan for $100 a month, but I don't think you can apply your situation to everyone. Most people do not have that luxury.

Re: Healthcare Reform Passes the House

Okay, now I was one of those 46 million (which by the way, that is not an accurate number) that did not have health insurance for a while.

When I was young, I didn't care about whether or not I had health care, but when I got older and worked in the city for a company that did not offer health care, I began to care because just working in the city was like smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day.

I had to really ***** and moan to get the company to offer health insurance and they eventually offered it to us.

However, in working with the company to secure a health plan, I realized how expensive it is.

In this proposed plan by our elected officials, those who are uninsured will get a health plan payed in full by us, the U.S. taxpayer. There is no such thing as a free meal and every time the government came up with a program that was supposed to help the anyone, we have to pay for it.

I don't understand how people don't think this will not affect them. This program has to be paid for and we have to pay for it, not private companies.

They just showed on CNN This AM or yesterday that the days of $100 plans might be over. Employers are more and more raising employee contributions OR increasing deductibles to deal with the rising health care costs.

I'm sure you are among the VERY few that only contribute $100 a month.

Regarding the $1400/month plan- it's an EMPLOYER sponsored plan, not one off the open market; it is also not a "cadillac" plan and doesn't offer any out of network benefits. There is NO WAY we could afford this plan monthly.

There is not ONE person in the DH's company (which is a large, national consumer packaged good company- household name- not a mom & pop shop) that takes that plan.

Everyone else takes (including us) the "crap" plan- it's $500/month OUR contribution and requires a $2400 deductible before ANY benefits kick in INCLUDING prescription (aside from well visits). With the deductible included, this plan costs us OOP $8400.00/year. Again, this is an employer sponsored plan, not one on the open market.

Because of the high deductible, I have been paying for COBRA out of pocket for myself for the past 3 months (Since DH got on the employer's plan) as I am pregnant and it is cheaper for me to pay $365.00 a month IN ADDITION to the $500 for his employer plan to have this baby.

We have NO OTHER CHOICE.. we cannot go on the open market and buy insurance for less than what we are paying for the "crap" employer plan.. and I wouldn't be able to get a reasonable plan right now anyway, as I am in the middle of a high-risk pregnancy on medications that retail at $30/daily dose.

This money we pay every month for health care could easily be going elsewhere in the economy.. but it isn't... b/c we don't have a choice.

AGain, just because employees have ACCESS to health care doesn't mean it is affordable.

For example, my dad's policy costs $1100/worker for a family of 4. That is the business' cost.

He is willing to split this with his employees... They pay half, he pays half. Not ONE person goes for it- most take insurance from their spouse.

Re: Healthcare Reform Passes the House

I have many concerns about the proposed healthcare plan. Specifically as it relates to the ability to retain your own healthcare. I know the the legistlation"intends" for people to be able to keep their current healthcare but I am not sure how realistic this is.

I think many employers will opt for the less expensive government option rather than a private plan. In addition, the tax on "Cadillac" plans will make it so that many are unable to continue to afford their current healthcare. The current definition for such a plan is not the original description but rather targets any health plan for a family with an aggregate value of over 21K (this includes employer contribution, your contributions as well as FSA).

I feel these actions will force many into the government option. I am concerned because of the poor job the overment generally does at managing things. For example, the distribution of H1n1 vaccines would have been a great opportunity to demonstrate efficiency. I am concerned that the quality of healthcare will decline. While I agree that the current situation needs to be reformed I do not think it should be substituted with mediocre healthcare for all.

Having experinced the Canadian system (my DH live there for several years) I can say that anyone with the means to seek healthcare in the US did so. DH's boss, for instance, would fly to the US for IVF treatments. A co-worker, with the same lung condition I had, had to wait months for a surgery that I waited 2 days for.

For me, the ideal option would have been a complete overhaul of the insurance industry and then and annual credit to qualifying families that HAS to be spent on insurance. This would avoid much of the "brain drain" that countries such as Canada have suffered.

While we have some of the worst healthcare systems we do have some of the best Medical Facilities and Professionals in the world and I think it is prudent to remedy one without diminishing the other.

Re: Healthcare Reform Passes the House

DH works for a MAJOR US corporation.

We pay for a family of 2 adult and 1 child about $300 per month. That's with a referral needed to see a specialist plan. If we take the no referral needed plan for next year (that was available for $200 3 years ago), we would have to pay almost $700 per month.

This is INSANE!!!

If such a big company cannot even make most health plans affordable, how are people working for mom and pop businesses going to do it?

And while MY company offers health insurance, it's not really health insurance. It's a discount plan. There is no co-pay. One of my co-worker had to have a procedure done. She was $5K out of pocket after the discount. How is that manageable for most people?

There is alot of complaining about prices people are paying for healthcare (300, 500, 700). What is considered affordable to you? What is a crap plan vs a cadiallac plan? To me that is 500/month, $20 copay, 1700 deductible VS Medicare.

I work for a US based company with over 100,000 employees and the example crap plan is the 'cadillac' plan they offer.

I actually chose a different plan that costs me 75/month for my whole family. I have no copays and no preventative cost (vaccines, wellness) but if I get sick, I pay. I manage the cost of my own healthcare. I have a pretty high deductible in case of something serious but I am ok with that because I driving my own costs.

I so wish the gov't would think along these lines but giving responsibility to the people would be like giving control to the people Chat Icon .

I'd gladly take the plan that costs $500 that isn't tied to a hefty $2400/yr deductible... God forbid something happens to DD - she breaks a bone or something- we will HAVE to shell out that $2400 in one lump sum... now, thank God we have savings accounts, but if we didn't it would certainly be a CC thing.. and I can see that happening to a lot of people getting into debt with.

I am all for giving people control over their health.. frankly, by having the high deductible plan we have now, we NEED to be a little more careful with going to the doctor- but I'm not sure if that is a GOOD thing.. especially with the flu thing going around and having small children..

Even with having the high deductible plan, I feel like I can't "manage" my health care b/c as far as I see from the EOB I get from the insurance company everything is in "code" so I can't even tell if I"m paying for something that we even got.

Re: Healthcare Reform Passes the House

What about people in Civil Service and Gov't jobs who took those jobs because of the medical plan they offered and the lower salary just for the benefits.

For example my Father started working many years ago for not much money and very good benefits, including after he retires for life.

What will be the incentive for people to even take these jobs if the medical is taken away?

What will happen to my Dad who worked so hard for 25 plus years in order to have this insurance?

Anyone have any answers?

Last night on Frontline they showed healthcare around the world.. and quite frankly it is pitiful that we are one of the worst "rich" nations out there in terms of health care, life expectancy and infant mortality.. we pay MORE money per person and get worse results, and that's a fact... but no one ever seems to ever really "care" about that point.

We are also the most obese which impacts life expectancy and health care costs.

A lot of the European countries ahead of us have stricter gun and crime laws which means fewer violent deaths.

50/223 countries puts us in top 25%. Not like we are last.

You just don't know what you have got till its gone.

You don't know how crappy your insurance is until you get sick and really need it.

I am not too sure about that - watch that video that i posted above - the youtube on with the congressman Mike Rogers - he is citing statistics which clearly show that if you have cancer in Canada or United Kingdom, you have a much higher rate of dying than if you are diagnosed and treated in the US. My Uncles are doctors (oncologist, surgeon, OB/GYN) and they have a ton of patients that fly in from other countries for treatment here. I go to a very well known diabetic center in NYC and the doctor tells me that they have a huge number of international patients.

I am sure alot of people saw this youtube video from Congressman Mike Rogers of his opening statement on health care reform - very good. It has 6 million hits and people are really talking about it. after watching it, feeling a little uneasy.

Anyone who is still on the fence regarding this issue, please watch the video Mrsej posted.

We can not afford to let the government run our healthcare. Pls let your local elected officials know that you are against this bill.
