photography moms.... need help with a lens

I have the nikon d40 and I wanted to get the 50mm 1.8 lens but I'm finding its not compatible with my camera. I wanted to know if there is another lens that's close to the 50mm 1.8 that is compatible with the d40. I want a lens that's good for indoor shooting. Any suggestions?Chat Icon

You need the 50 mm AF-S lens. This is because the D40 doesn't have the motor to autofocus the lenses, so you need the lens that will do that. It's a little more expensive, but they can be found to be used on the D40, D60, etc.

Good Luck!

same. you can get 50mm lenses in f/1.4 and f/1.8. The f/1.8 is cheaper than the f/1.4. Just be sure the lens is an f/1.8 AF-S and not a f/1.8D lens.

Hope that helps.

Can I ask a question too?

I have the Nikon D60 with the 18-55 and 55-200 lens. Is there a lens that can kind of combine the 2 so I don't have to keep switching lenses? I also don't want to spend a ton of money.

Thanks!

I have the 18-200mm VR lens by Nikon. Definitely covers the range of the two lenses you have. It's expensive though. I got mine last Christmas and it was $650, I believe they are more expensive now, but I don't know why....

A cheaper, but also good alternative would be an 18-135mm lens

These seem like great lenses but are a little more than I can spend right now.

I will keep them in mind though!

I have that lens and after 1 year and a photo class, I can tell you now that I would not buy this lens again if I had the knowledge I have now on that lens, aperture, etc....

The 135mm zoom is really pushing on not having the VR.

It did serve it's purpose but between the 2, get the 18-200 VR or save for it if you cannot get it now.

I think they just changed it so it's a bit more $$$ now.

Make sure also your lenses are made in US and not imported. Otherwise, you will have issues with warranties if you need to use it.

The 18-200mm VR has great reviews but I asked my photoclass teacher about it and he told you really do not want a lens with that much range. It does not do as good as it should at both range of the lens.

An alternative is to get the 55-200 mm VR. I did not want to do that myself and bought the 18-135mm because the 18-200mm VR was a bit too much at the time. I think I would have been happier with the 55-200 VR instead of my one lens. Mostly because I really don't shoot under 50mm anyway. I mostly use the telephoto with DS being a toddler and moving everywhere. For me, it's easier to shoot pics with him farther away from me.

Thanks for sharing this!!!!

I mostly use the 55-200 for taking pics of DS but DH complains that it's too much zoom for him at home.

Tara- the AF-S 50mm lens are big bucksChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I asked my instructor and we can use the less expensive ones, we'd just need to focus it ourselves! Thats what I plan on doing- can't afford $500 on a lens right now!!

heres the one I am getting from Amazon- plus its free shipping

Sorry to butt in, but just wanted to say I shoot with a rebel and have the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens and LOVE it. Photogs call it the "plastic fantastic" and since it's made out of plastic, it's super cheap (less than $100). Can't zoom with it, which can be a little tricky, but I swear you can't take a bad pic with it. I always get compliments on my pics, and I am as amateur as you get!

Nikon makes a 35mm AF-S lens that is 1/2 the price of the 50mm AF-S....around $220ish

It's a wonderful lens and I highly recommend it.....
