Transitioning out of EI
My DD will soon be transitioning out of EI. Does anyone have a list of good approved sped pre-school programs? We live in Merrick.
I am already going to try and look into Little Village. Any other comments on other places would help!!!

Re: Transitioning out of EI
what services is he getting now? PT OT Speech? is it all home based right now?
do you think you will be approved for full or half day? there are plenty of schools in the area that are great... just depends on what you are looking for.
my son did the EI class at Little village. loved them, but next to impossible to get into. if you're interested there, call and get his name on the waiting list now.
Boces in Levittown (ECC) is full day only, but an awesome program for speech. they don't do pull out 1 on 1 sessions, they have 2 teachers in the room all day, one certified for speech, one for special ed. oh, and they don't offer PT or OT directly, so if you need other services besides speech this might not be the best choice.
there is the program through bellmore in the Rheinhart building. its half day. i know people who love that one.
dutch lane is also half day. very high functioning kids.
North Shore (AKA Barbara C Wilson Preschool) in woodbury is another very good one. mainly speech but also offers OT and PT. they have both half and full day. again, get on the waiting list if you like this one.
there is also variety up in syossett. focuses mainly on autistic kids, but can handle anyone. i was told a while back to be careful with them, they don't always place the kids in the best fit for classes. they like to fill up their quotas. but never dealth with them directly.
there are others, but those are some of hte bigger names. there is one on marcus ave in new hyde park, but its a hike. i have a friend with a son there, and she is happy with the place.

My son goes to the one in NHP. It's called the Brookville center. I love it! He is transitioning out of EI and I'm hoping to keep him there in the CPSE program.

Re: Transitioning out of EI
we are looking into:
Little Village, if you havent done so, call them now to get on their list... they are also having open houses for the 2010 school year. the tours are for adults only from 9:30 - 11am
Fridays: Jan 8, 29 & Feb 5, 26
RSVP to Roberta Cooperman 520-6036
there is also ACDS in plainview, my DS goes there now, and i love the school. they focus a lot with speech bc down syndrome children have problems talking.
with the Boces program, they do a separate eval (on top of the EI into CPSE eval) and will then place you in one of the Boces schools they feel is appropriate for your DC.
North Shore in syosset/woodbury (Barbara C Wilson) is supposed to be very good and we are visiting that one...
Dutch Lane is very good for Speech, my friends DS goes there and she loves it.
Variety i hear mixed reviews about, good and bad. (we are not going to visit that school, and if you want to know why just FM me)

EDITED: ACDS & North Shore

it might have, bc i just had my IFSP meeting and i mentioned it to my service Coord. and she said it was a 4 year program, and last night at my team meeting we talked about it there as well, and they said 4 is the earliest as well.
