Re: Does anyone else find this rude – regarding waiting in line to make a purchase?

I worked in a convenience store for years & most customers did this. I never thought it was rude, I thought it was helpful. It freed up the line & I would ring up the papers & put the change in the register once the line was gone.

I THINK ITS RUDE. I used to work at Genovese and people did it all the time on Sundays. It was worse when we got the scanners b/c then we had to remember what paper they took while ringing up the other people then go get what they took to scan it.

And just b/c everyone does it, doesn't mean its okay.

If you want the paper that quickly that you can't wait on line - get it delivered to your houseChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am kind of in this boat of thought...lets say it could be anything. If the line is really that long, then chances are that the people behind the counter are really busy. And then lets say that 3 people come in see the line, take the one thing they came to get - put their exact change on the counter and leave...who the hell knows what that's for? Lets say I am at the grocery store and I only have one item and I am behind a lady with a full cart. If she lets me go ahead of her thats great - if not I wait just like everyone else...it would be weird to just walk ahead and say "here - for the milk!" My time is just as valuable as anyones but first come first serve. Its not like the person at the front of the line was just shooting the bull and the cashier wasn't doing their job. I've been the cashier and I have been the customer. It's better for everyone just to wait your turn.

I completely agree with this!!! I have seen this happen too. I find it very rude!

You are in the store to buy something. You wait in line to buy it. That is what a line is for. if you think that people are taking too long with their morning coffee orders, then go to a gas station where they aren't typically the 'special orders'. You are no more important than me. Plus, the people behind the counter are so busy that they don't remember what was gotten.

If you are so busy, then get it delivered, or leave a few minutes early to stand in line and buy it. I have seen it happen often down here, but never back home. I think people get so wrapped up in their commute on Long Island.

Why is it rude to make the line go quicker for EVERYONE. Seriously, the cashier does not have to ring that stuff until later, making the line move quicker. In a way it is courteous.

How does the cashier remember the 3 piles of money on the counter? Also, I did once see the person in front of me just swipe the change from the counter that was left by a paper buyer. It's there, out in the open. WHo knows who it belongs to?

Also, who says that a paper buyer has more rights than a coffee buyer? Why should they go first? I don't even drink coffee. When I bought my paper, I stood in line. Paper doesn't trump coffee. We all need our own things for different reasons.

If that is the case, then beer drinkers should always go before margarita drinkers at the bar. Much faster to pour a beer than to make a frozen margarita.

But I have been standing in line for a while and this person just walked in, so they didn't make the line go faster for me...they decided they didnt need to stand in a line.

AS a teenager I was a cashier for years and never had any difficulty remembering to put $ in for papers. I simple moved the $ away from the customers and kept my line moving. When the line was gone, it was pretty easy to remember what was what. And I did not care who it belonged to as long as I knew what it was for.

Re: Does anyone else find this rude – regarding waiting in line to make a purchase?

not rude if the paper doesn't have to be scanned. if they just have to throw the 50 cents in the drawer, i think it's fine.

i don't do it because i get mine delivered, but i would. why should i wait in line to get a paper that doesn't have to be prepared like a coffee?

Re: Does anyone else find this rude – regarding waiting in line to make a purchase?

I don't think it's rude to the people on line but from the cashier's perspective it can cause problems ringing the item up. I used to work at a supermarket and people would take one item and put the exact change next to me. But I couldn't ring it until I was done with the current order...very annoyingChat Icon

I've seriously never even given it much thought. It doesn't bother me in the least, but I've never done it. I probably wouldn't -- I just always wait my turn, but I certainly couldn't care less or waste any energy getting bothered by this.

Re: Does anyone else find this rude – regarding waiting in line to make a purchase?

No, I don't find it rude either.

What I do find rude in regards to waiting in line is when you're waiting on a long slow line and a another cashier opens and says, "next in line" and the people way in back of the line rush to be first on that line.
