Layoffs

eta: This is NYC!

District rep was here today.

She said layoff letters will be going out June 4th --either by mail or handed out by Principal they are not sure which yet.

She said that they are unsure how many will be layed off but that it will be across all lisc. (with some exceptions in math, science and SPED).

She said anyone with 7 yrs or less should be prepared to get laid off.

I will have 7 yrs in Sept. when I spoke to her after the meeting she said "I dont think you need to worry but I cant promise it". Meaning she thinks in MOST lisc areas it will not go up to 7 yrs but iit might--esp in rare lisc like Home Ec.it could go up to 20 yrs for a rare lisc since it goes by citywide lisc senority

I am not sure if they are really trying to scare us or what but Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Layoffs

My district went up to year 7 in elementary. I have 9 years total (8 years elementary 1 year ESL) I was excessed out of ESL and will go back to elementary by the skin of my teeth since I think they would only count my 8 years of elementary! I am bummed that I'm being excessed out of ESL but I have to count my blessings and be grateful that I will have a job (I hope!) I seriously doubt that the teachers will not be hired back. The kids aren't going anywhere and I can't imagine the classrooms with 40 kids. My fingers are crossed that everyone will be hired back!

If someone was a para before becoming a teacher, does that time in count? One of our siblings was a para for a few years and then became a teacher, they have 9 years including the time as a para. We don't want to ask them since they haven't talked about layoffs at all to us.

From what my rep said (again this is NYC) they are counting time IN LISC. So if you were a parafor 10 yrs and then became a teacher and have been teaching 3 yrs in an english lisc (for example) they will count only your 3 yrs. i *think* this is how it is working.

The language used was citywide senority based on time in lisc. whatever lisc, you are apointed in.

This is layoffs.

Excess means there is no budget at your school, but you still get pay, benefits etc. while you seek a new position.

Layoff is file for unemployment and get on cobra insurance Chat Icon

Does this mean that they are not laying off any math, science of SPED teachers?

They ARE but less of them--is how I understood it.

Cathy, if it does come up with your relative, advise them to find out if they can be moved back to the para license if they are bumped from the teaching job. Depending on how much time s/he was a para, there still might be enough time in to at least hold on to that job. The chapter leader would know more.

FYI- my anger is not directed at you ladies, but I want to say this: The city had BETTER NOT LAY OFF *ONE* teacher in any of these areas. BloomKlein is getting $5 MILLION DOLLARS to recruit teachers in these subjects. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I am SO angry about this. How many postions could be saved if this money went for teachers who are already working?

Re: Layoffs

I just asked DH about this - he is going on 8 years in the City - he said there is NO WAY that it will go up to 7 years.

He also heard that on June 14th there will be an offer of a buyout of the older teachers. Hopefully that is the case Chat Icon

7 years IS a hell of a lot of teachers. Something like 1/3 of the city has 5 or less. There's no way they're laying off that many people. If you're untenured or unlicensed, I'd be nervous. Otherwise, I *think* we're ok.

M,

I've heard that same too. But, I think we should try to keep hope. I've heard they are still negotiating to get the numbers down.

Re: Layoffs

I'd heard that that money is to BUILD schools, and that we really may not see much, if any of it, so it probably wouldn't save jobs (this is as per our district/region's) UFT guy...I feel like this is all a bad game...

This is exactly what I heard as well. I think this is not going to help the city schools at all.

Me too..I heard it could not be used to fill budget gaps. Hopefully, the UFT scored points by being cooperative and will get something in return.
