WWYD/Vent (work related) please dont move my post right away

Hi! I have been at my current job for over 7 years and over the past 2 years the company itself has changed so much and it has become a very unpleasant place to work at. I have my masters degree and I am at a Director level but yet i am still extremely underpaid and I get treated like a child. It is very insulting. Every week I cry at least once because of this dumb place and it's not healthy for me. I have been looking since last Oct for a new job and nothing. Its very frustrating. My current place does offer a lot of great benefits...a work from home day and they are very flexible with my schedule (which is great since I am a mom) BUT when i am in the office it requires me traveling into the city.

I spoke to my bosses and there is no plan for a significant pay increase anytime soon but in exchange i can work an extra day from home. Which is great...when i am home - when I am there i am miserable and feel that I am stuck in a rut and I can't stand one of my bosses he is so incredibly rude and has the biggest ego ever! it is sickening.

So i have been thinking about leaving...and trying to adjunct in field i am in and maybe getting a part time job locally. I would loose things like paid time off and 401K and the comfort of knowing what my pay check would be...which loosing all of this is terrifying to me.

SO - my question is - wwyd if you were in my situation. Would you stick it out even though you were absolutely miserable? Or would you take a chance and leave?

Thanks for your advice and sorry this is so long. I hope this doesn't get moved to the Career board.

normally i would say life is too short to be miserable at your job BUT knowing how the job market is.. i would say tough it out and be thankful that you have a job.

i too have my masters degree but i havent been able to find a job (in my field).. so im WAYYYYY underpaid for my education level and i have no other choice right now.

at least he is offering for you to work from home an extra day.

hang in there! Chat Icon

While I totally understand that feeling of just being "done" mentally, I think it's VERY VERY important to do an assessment (Pros/Cons) list and let that guide your decision.
From what you've posted you now only have to be there 3 days out of the week - what an AWESOME perk, esp. for a mom.
I think that where you are in life really defines your options, kwim??? If you feel like leaving would be ok because you and DH can still make ends meet without too many quality of life losses, then I'd support that.
BUT I think its very very hard to find a job when you're not working. I don't know why but this has always been true for me. The best jobs I've ever had have been ones I got while I was already employed somewhere. I felt like I had more negotiating leverage, and always ended upgetting better pay and benefits than the initial offering.
But to lose benefits and 401K would be a red light for me; those things matter (again due to lifestage issues)...
Is it possible for you to start looking and throwing out some resumes/networking WHILE you're working???

Yes, I have been sending out my resume since Oct and had only one call back for something that was paying much less then I am making now Chat Icon

My plan was to teach college as an adjunct when i finished but the pay is not great and I had an opportunity with Queens College to teach a course in the fall but it was on Wed mornings and I can't really do that being that I work full time so I had to turn it down. Chat Icon

At what point is enough, enough? I just feel like this place is not healthy for me anymore. I know it makes sense to stick it out for all the benefits but i feel like if I keep saying that I'll never get out. Chat Icon

I wouldn't leave without getting a secured position in another company.

It does sound like you like the work & the benefits (work from home & flexibility) are terrific. But if you are truly miserable - and going in 3x a week & crying over it, well then change. When you say stick it out...when do you stick it out until? If I told you you would have to work there another 7 years? 1 year? 2 months? it still is too long for someone to live 3/5th of the week stressed & in tears.

How many days a week do you have to be in the office? What changed in the past 2 years? Was it cutbacks because of the economy? Was it a new hire?

Surely you aren't the only one that is affected by the changes. Is there a chance you could speak to HR or the bosses? Could you be the person that changes it to a workplace you want to work?

There is always going to be someone with an ego, who is rude - so I don't know that would be enough to drive me out of a job.

Re: WWYD/Vent (work related) please dont move my post right away

im also tired of my job and the company i work for. my boss does nothing but nitpick and micromanage and i spend way too much $$ to commute (and time as well) when i could be home with DS.

Like you..Im terrified of not knowing what will be..benefits, income, etc. But i know for my own sanity and well being I need to move on.

Dont settle for something that is making you so miserable. I dont think any job is worth it.

My friend and ex coworker let the job stress get to her so much that her health went to crap. (she already had underlying issues) but needed open heart surgery. and u know what..they laid her off the day her FMLA leave was up. Everyone is expendable.

Do what is right for you, your health and sanity!!

Pretty much all of the above - cutbacks, change in management, and restructuring of our dept multiple times. My job has changed three time in the past two years. At one point i was doing three jobs at once. Unfortunately there is no one i can go to. For a company of 100 people we only have 1 HR person. I learned from experience that she cannot be trusted as I had went to her once to talk about problems with my boss and his ego and she went back to him. Which has made it extremely uncomfortable for me. There is a lot of favoritism and DRAMA that goes on. It's just a terrible place to be at. And although working from home is great sometimes it is actually harder to be home because i am constantly on conference calls and attached to my email and with a 2 1/2 year old it is very hard to get things done and it at times more stressful to be home then there - sure it's great and i am very fortunate but at the same time it is also stressful in its own way. Then i feel like I am neglecting my child because I am so busy trying to work. And on days that I am working from home I feel like my boss purposely sets up calls and meetings with me just to make sure I am working. And he says to me all the time "working from home is a luxury and if you must be available all day and prove that you can get your work done from home" Thanks as if I didn't know that. i am just so worn.

If you approached the other boss, rather than the HR person, to discuss your issues, it may be workable but it doesnt sound like the issue is going to work out.

Can you ask to be let go? Will they challenge unemployment? Smaller companies often do.

If you go to work each day thinking "I'd love to be fired", it's time to leave. Do what you have to.Chat Icon

that is funny because I was just saying this to DH this morning - that I am planning on going in to talk to them next week about my unhappiness and then i said I wish they would just lay me off at this point - everyone I know that i keep in touch with who has been let go recently says it was the best thing to happen to them - idk if they are just saying that or not but I can't lie and say i am bit envious. thanks girlies for listening and your advice. Sorry if i sound like a big whino Chat Icon

Chat Icon thanks! it's a terrible feeling when you hate the place and people you work for and dread going there everyday. I am so scared of making a change but at this point I dont know what else to do and feel that I need to just stop whining about it and do something about it. I hope your situation gets better...hang in there. Chat Icon

Re: WWYD/Vent (work related) please dont move my post right away

wow sounds alot like me. i am very unhappy at my job too. i get soooo depressed on sunday nights. i also get to WFH 1x a week. but i would trade that in for a job that i at least like. i feel guilty complaining in this economy & feel i should be grateful i have a job. however, alot of people i know are resigning on their own & are very happy at their new jobs.

i am kind of on the fence too & wondering if i should just tough it out. only problem is my company is relocating to Jersey City at year end. the commute will be murder.

sorry if i'm not much help but i can definetely relateChat Icon
