Why Femara over Clomid
My RE just prescribed this drug to me over clomid for the first time. Could be because of my fear of multiples, but other than that I'm not sure why he thought this would be better.
Anyone have any experience taking this drug or know why Femara over clomid?

Re: Why Femara over Clomid
I used Femara instead of clomid. I think it has something to do with clomid thinking your uterine lining after a while or something but i am not positive. I used Femara and gonal F and am now PG with twins.

I was given femara as well....and I also think it is a newer choice of drug because it doesn't thin your lining like clomid. I did femara with follistim and just found out i am having twins.

Re: Why Femara over Clomid
My RE likes to give femara instead of clomid because he said there are less side effects and you get better lining. I did one cycle of clomid and my lining wasnt as good as it is on the femara now.

Re: Why Femara over Clomid
i agree with the PPs. femara doesnt have the side effects that clomid has, #1 being thinning of the uterine lining, which is so important for healthy implantation. i have also heard that you shouldnt do clomid more than a few times in a lifetime, because in some cases the thinning is irreversible. i think many doctors (primarily ob/gyn) still use clomid first because it is actually approved for fertility. femara is a drug used to treat breast cancer, but it also has similar effects as clomid, so many RE's use it that way even though last i heard (it may be different now) it wasnt officially approved specifically for the treatment of infertility related to ovulatory issues.

are you seeing an RE or an ob/gyn? an ob might not look at your lining at all, and i dont think all RE's measure every cycle. they are measured in mm's and depending on what cycle day you are on it should be a specific thickness. that being said mine was never quite there - always in the 6-8mm range around trigger time, and it was always OK, enough to support a pregnancy, but never great. i also had two chemicals that are most likely related to other issues, but still does make me wonder a little if my lining contributed to it.
anyway if you are concerned ask your doctor, but if you see an RE and they aren't concerned i wouldnt worry too much about it either. if its an ob/gyn i would ask about it specifically.
good luck!
