Bus and Food Allergies

Does anyone have a child in school with a food allergy that takes the bus?

The bus driver will not take his meds on the bus with him and he is too litle to self medicate. The school has a no food on the bus policy but I know kids will be eating anyway.

I'm not sure yet on excactly how long he will be on the bus, if his stop is one of the last to be picked up/ first to be dropped off deals.

I'm not sure if I should drive him or let him the bus.

I HATE food allergies!

For me it would depend on the allergy and how severe.

I have a cousin who has a kid with a severe egg allergy, but she goes on the bus since she won't be ingesting it.

I have a friend with a dc with a severe peanut allergy so she doesn't allow her on the bus since she's too scared of a reaction from breathing in the dust.

This is one of the biggest reasons I'm so happy we live too close to the elementary school for busses.

Chat Icon I hope you can figure out something that works for you.

I'm crashing a bit, since my DD is only 3, but I would call the district. I had a child in my class who had a 1:1 matron for the bus due to his peanut allergy. He rode a mini-bus and the matron checked the bus prior to boarding. He also had it written that he needed a peanut free table. He had an IEP that this was written into, but it could be done with a 504 plan.

Do you have a Section 504 plan for your child? I think medication on the bus would fall under that and they would be required to allow it. I would speak to the school about it.

Re: Bus and Food Allergies

My friend's daughter has multiple food allergies and she doesn't send her on the bus.

The district can provide a mini bus and a health and safety monitor for a child with severe food allergies under a 504 plan.

We went for a meeting with the school's principal, nurse and psychologist and they did not think a 504 was warranted. I'm pretty frustrated because I haven't even found out who his teacher will be and even then the principal said it is unlikely i will be able to talk to her until after school starts.

I'm going to see how the first couple of days go and if there are any roblems I think I'll have to revisit with the principal and push for a 504.

I have no advice regarding the bus, but I wouldn't stress too much regarding this. I am positive your child isn't the first the teacher has had with severe food allergies. We usually have at least one each year and are trained to the max how to handle each unique situation. Even if you don't get to speak to the teacher prior to the first day, I'm sure he/she will be well informed of your child's allergies and your child will be very well taken care of from the minute he/she leaves your care. I already know the food allergies and major medical conditions of my classes for this coming year. I had one that I was not sure of and have already been in contact with the school nurse. I hope this makes you feel better.

Re: Bus and Food Allergies

In our district, children are not allowed to eat on the bus and from what I have seen/heard, no one eats or drinks on the bus.

However, if you are really worried, then I would not send my child on the bus. JMHO
