Where to live on Long Island???
My husband and I are moving to Long Island and we don't know anything about it! With his job, we can live anywhere on Long Island. We love the water/boating, so we're looking for a coastal town. We have a 9 month old and recently found out we have another on the way - so, we're looking for a place that would be good for a young family. We like to go to dinner, shopping, etc. What towns would you recommend looking at?
Thanks so much!!

Re: Where to live on Long Island???
Where is he working (what town)? There are tons of great towns, but with rush hour it can take 3 hours+ to get from one end of the island to the other!

Re: Where to live on Long Island???
Northport, Centerport are my choice. If they're in your price range, Port Washington, Cold Spring Harbor are more upscale.
By boating, if you mean sailing, I would stick to the north shore of LI.
If you are looking for speedboats, south shore seems to be more for that - at least from my experience.
It really depends on where your husband is working & what your price range is.
I would be careful with Huntington. While some areas are beautiful, some school districts are having issues with crime rates - one elementary school was shut down.

He will have a territory that includes all of LI, so location is open. On a daily basis he won't be traveling, just periodically. So, anywhere in LI works for us.

Re: Where to live on Long Island???
if you want to live ON or very near the water you are probably going to need to spend upwards of 600k. If you can do that I would look at:
Northport, Babylon, Huntington, San Remo/Kings Park

I thought of Port Jeff immediately too!
I dont know much about Nassau county- as far as suffolk goes, Port Jeff is a great option- and the school districts surrounding it are excellent as well - three village (stony brook, setauket), miller place, mt sinai

Re: Where to live on Long Island???
I also agree with Port Jefferson, amazing schools and a great town. Towns near PJ that are also great are Stony Brook and Mt. Sinai, both with top notch schools.
Further West I would check out Northport and Cold Spring Harbor.
It all really depends on your price range.
I live in Huntington Villlage and I love it here,I have a 4months old. Although the school districts in the towns I mentioned above are a better IMO.
Good Luck!

I would look into Port Washington. Great town for young families, with a lot for the kids to do. Home prices and taxes are high though.

Re: Where to live on Long Island???
it depends on your price range! there are beautiful homes on the south shore of long island in nassau county that i love. bellmore, merrick, all have gorgeous homes in a great school district (bellmore- merrick SD) and most of the homes have slips in the backyard. you will be able to take the boat to the ocean as well. good luck!

I live in Stony Brook and it's awesome! Very family friendly, amazing top-notch schools, and a 5 min. drive to the water. It's a great town and close to EVERYTHING........malls, stores, places to eat, etc.

I'm a south shore nassau county girl so I'm partial to this area. Merrick, Bellmore, wantagh, seaford, massapequa, levittown, bethpage, rockville centre, oceanside all within 20 minutes of the beach- or less. All great schools and neighborhoods, parks, restaurants etc.

Re: Where to live on Long Island???
I'm partial to the north shore, but there are many great places to live on the south shore as well. I live in St. James which is part of Smithtown. It is a wonderful area to raise a family in. Good schools and I'm only about 10 min from the beach. Other areas I like are, Northport Stony Brook Setauket
