CPSE

I'm just beginning the CPSE process, and I'm overwhelmed. My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. Our EI team leader gave us several preschool recommendations, but I was wondering if I should add any to the list. I'm considering the full-day, but I would really feel more comfortable with a half-day. Any favorites? (I'm in Suffolk County, but not too far from Nassau.)

What kinds/how many hours of after school services do you receive? (ST, OT, ABA) I'm trying to get a feel for what I should ask for at his meeting.

Does anyone send their child to a regular preschool with a SEIT?

Are you happy with your decision? And did your child transition OK?

Thank so much, and I really appreciate any advice that anyone can give me.

Re: CPSE

DS goes to a full day program, he is autistic (high functioning for the most part)

he went to a half day program at age 2 (still through EI), so he was definitely ready for a full day.

he still gets 3x30 of speech & 3x60 of family training a week. all of his other services are done in school.

Does anyone send their child to a regular preschool with a SEIT?

I am not sure how CPSE is in Suffolk, but i know it's harder to get outside/in home services when they are paying for a school program. DS didnt need a reg pre-school, because of his many typical friends and the things we do with him. (advice and words from his EI therapists) and the school districted wouldnt have approved of it either)

we are very happy with our decision and he transitioned very nicely to a full day program

Re: CPSE

Christopher went to a full day program at the age of 2. He was getting ABA at school, as well as OT-3 times a week, and speech 4 times a week.
He was also getting 10 hours of ABA at home.

We now have him in a different program. It is a longer day and gets 5 hours of home services of ABA. We also take him to PROMPT, which has made a HUGE difference.

we are 100% HAPPY with our choice.

Re: CPSE

DS is autistic.

If you go to a FT program it's because they want to use the time in school for other services also.

Start ASAP. Best spots are taken EARLY like Dec. January for next September. Very little availability for FT programs.

DS goes FT. 9-2:45. He receives OT, Speech and PT in school. He gets 2 hours SEIT (ABA) at home every day after school. He has no SEIT in school. This is a special needs school with a 6/1/2 ratio.

He also gets uninteruptured services (year round services). Which means, excepts for Holidays, he gets the SEIT at home even on vacation (Christmas break, Winter break, Spring break and Summer break when not in Summer school).

It might depend on your SD, but services in school are not provided while on vacation/days off. Only those home services are on the uninterupted services.

The reason they do services in school vs at home, it's because it's much cheaper.

If your DC needs a lot of services, your SD will probably suggest a FT service. Not a PT then give you services at home. But you can negociate. It really depends on your SD and DC's needs.

My daughter is PDD-NOS. She's now in kindergarten but started out pre-school in a 4 hour program with ABA, PT, OT and speech. She was integrated into a 2 and 1/2 hour integrated class with an hour SEIT per day.
She's now in Kindergarten in a contained classroom.
I felt a full day was way too much for her because she gets tired very easily.
I would definitely recommend ACLD Kramer Learning Center in Bay Shore. They truly worked miracles with my daughter! Feel free to FM me Chat Icon

My DS also has PDD-NOS. Some of this is information I have discovered through my own experience, but some is based on things I have been told by professionals in the field.

We are in the process of transitioning. My DS is in a full day EI class now, after being in a half day class last spring and summer. The district will encourage a full day program if your DC needs a lot of services partially because the team is all under one roof, which helps them work together, but partially because it's cheaper for them to pay for it that way.

Full day programs are very hard to come by, but the districts don't want to offer you a half day with supplemental services if they don't have to. What started to happen with us was that the district was sending our paperwork to pretty much every school in Nassau County, even if the class size and ratio was not appropriate for DS.

We are asking for a couple of hours of Parent Training and OT at home, to maintain what he is getting now through EI. Most people are telling us that the district will probably refuse the request, but we are hoping to negotiate and get something, even if it is less than what we would like. Generally, I think many districts say they don't offer home services through CPSE, but as you can see on the other responses on the thread, that is not true.

I visited 6 schools in Nassau County. Feel free to FM me if you want my opinion of any of them. Chat Icon

My DS also was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. He was recieving E.I. in home services up until he "aged out' this past August.

I requested everything to now take place in school. The district approved.
He goes to a 4 hour program (from 9-1) and then ABA from 1-3.

During his 4 hour class, he gets pulled for Speech (3x a week), OT (2x a week) and PT (1x a week).
We get Parent Training (at home) once a month.
I wanted him in the 4 hour class because he's not losing as much class time as he would in a 2.5 hour class being pulled out to other services.

If you have any questions, please FM me.
I cannot say enough about his school, teachers and Team!
I am also in Suffolk County.
