changing name on deed

have any of you changed your name on the deed? We bought our house right after we got back from our HM and i did not have time at that point to change my name so the deed, tax bills, etc are all addressed to my husband, and myself but in my maiden name... does this make a difference? or should i get the name changed? if so is there a fee involved? TIA!!

Re: changing name on deed

i haven't changed my name since i've been married, which is 2 years and bad i know! so we have different names on the deed of our house. our lawyer told us that if i ever wanted to change my name legally that it really wasn't necessary to change it on the deed. if you ever go to sell your house then you just have to show your birth certificate and any other documentation that shows you were this "other person" previously. He also said there is about a $400 fee to get a new deed. HTH!Chat Icon

You will have to pay a fee to get a new deed.

It doesn't matter if your maiden name is on the deed, tax bills, etc. If you go to sell the house, you will just need to show a copy of your marriage certificate and fill out a "formerly known as" affidavit which is no big deal at all.

My boss (who did my closing) told me not to even bother with changing the deed. He said it's not worth the fee to do it.

Re: changing name on deed

I'm a real estate attorney and my deed still shows my maiden name Chat Icon As long as you are on there - it's not worth the filing fee or legal fee to do a deed transfer.

Re: changing name on deed

We never changed, our deed still has my maiden name. My attorney said it was ok and not really worth paying the fee to have itchanged.
