Guys, please be sure to post according to cranky kimbalina's standards of how NOT to drag a thread out. I know I am the only one who apparently didn't get the memo that I should stop posting, and apparantly, I was the one on this entire thread that needed to be scolded, so heed this as a friendly reminder. Chat Icon hopefully she has had a nice cup of coffee and some breakfast and is now in a better mood. :) sorry kimbalina, for not knowing how to post Chat Icon

YUP! Cranky Kimbalina is sick of you and your threads... then when it cools off you are back with "I just thought of something" to bump it back up.

This entire thread is a dead horse. SNOW HAPPENS!! Maybe it is not being handled to you standards... then you know what become a Plow Driver strap one to your SUV and clean up your block!

I dunno. I don't think the topic is over. People are still posting. News just came out that people died as a result of this screw up/snow. Don't seem like a dead topic to me.Chat Icon

Did I miss something? Why can't speakthetruth post? You make it sound like she's bumping a thread that disappeared a week ago.Chat Icon

. Well, she did state she is sick of me and my threads. Which is a bit of a head-scratcher and kind of hurts a little, but hey, not everyone is going to like everyone, I guess! At least I know where I stand, I guess. I really like everyone around here, though. I do not mind threads that spark debate and what not! BUT when you keep BEATING a dead horse over something, and there are multiple threads over it...

You come in with a new name and start posting all these threads- Fine - YAY we have something to talk about besides who is who Chat Icon BUT geez it is snow.. why come back with "You know what I just thought about"

So, sorry I hurt your feelings Chat Icon But you would think that 2600+ post you would have a thicker skin.

Thanks goobster! Chat Icon and kimbalina, I'm not sure if I ever crossed your path (or ayne's) in a bad way, but if I did, I'm sorry...for whatever it was ! And ayne, I know you just joined the pregnancy board and I was happy about it...I always find your posts on the celeb board entertaining and funny. But, if you don't like me for whatever reason, then that can be that, and no big deal.

It's not that I don't like you, I never said that. I just didn't see the reason to keep resurfacing a thread that would die, and then people would get heated all over again.

it snowed??? hmmm maybe that's why my DH has been missing since sunday at 4pm b/c he's plowing (town of hempstead) and rescuing other plows that are getting stuck in the snow....and only slept for 4 hrs in 48...

i can't wait to see the thread when we get a hurrican katrina like storm...will people complain that there aren't enough swimmies or snorkels?

ETA: i would've posted this an hour ago but thats how long it took to read this novel

a plow finally came to my street last night and got stuck.

I don't buy ANY of this "the snow overwhelmed us" crap.

EVERY other snow storm we've had, the salt spreaders were out the night before. This time NO salt spreaders, and we had plows passing before there was even 2 inches on the ground. If they had continued with that pattern, then the plows would not have gotten stuck. I understand things not being perfect, but something is totally wrong here.

what if you worked for the dept. of sanitation in nyc for years, studied hard for the supervisor's test because you had a young family and wanted to advance in rank and pay, finally were hired after being on the list for years and then told you were losing your job, your pay, and your seniority that you worked so hard for years for on Jan. 1st 2011 due to budget cuts? Also, with no promise of ever getting rehired back as a supervisor, going back to a garage as a 'bottom guy', losing your pay, would you be so inclined to supervise the workers who will become superior to you next week?

pls don't shoot the messenger

i

and what?? this happens in the private sector every single day.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T

ALso, I think driving in the snow is not the smartest BUT in prior storms our roads have been so well plowed as I mentioned above, that people could really drive on the roads without the expectation of getting stuck.

If the plows had been out on the same schedule they were in prior storms (such as the one in February) I don 't think cars would have gotten stuck.

Also, we didn't SEE a plow. It wasn't that there were abandoned cars on the street, no plows ever showed up.

This is very true. Last February when the schools closed down and everything was shut down during the day for the first snow storm, we brought my daughter to the emergency room that night with 105 fever.. she had pneumonia. The snowfall was heavy, visibility was awful but the plows were out while the snow was falling. We parked about 2 feet from the curb when we got to the hospital for the amount of snow that had already been plowed, and another 3 inches fell while we were in the hospital (based on what we cleared off the car when we left the hospital).. but the plows were working, the salt spreaders were out and we weren't crippled.

I'm just grateful that my kids are healthy now because who knows if we would have been able to make it to the hospital this time.

snow storm stopped monday morning.. it's wednesday afternoon... hasn't been 3 days yet. the storm was all day sunday and really picked up throughout the night of sunday into monday and did not stop snowing until monday morning. monday was a storm day too.

the salters should have been out earlier... but they were not all called into work the day before the storm. I know of one worker who was called in on Christmas. My DH was off on Christmas.... he didn't start storm duty until Sunday, the day of the storm.
Bloomberg didn't declare any of that to be done. The weather and early news reports didn't tell people to say home nor did they tell cars to not park on major streets or alternate side parking.
Bloomberg either wasn't aware the storm would be this bad at first, or he wanted to save money or a combo of both. He's def out to save money so I think that aspect is def a factor. It was a holiday the day before.. that's double time and a half per worker. Aside from them being short workers from the hiring freeze they had for the last 3 years.
ALL the workers have been out since Sunday at least though.

one difference with last feb storm and this storm... they had more workers go out BEFORE the storm in the Feb one. All those workers were out just the same during the storm in both cases. The before aspect did not happen in this case. Not many workers were called in on SAT for the SUN storm... normally they have them start snow duty the DAY BEFORE THE STORM. Not so this storm. They were not directed to do so.

I'm glad your kids are safe and healthy too.

ETA: the before the storm aspect is of great importance because they get to the major streets to salt them first and then they salt the other streets as well... before the snow really starts.
They actually sit in the plows and salt spreaders waiting for the snow to start falling... they line up on the streets and wait for the snow. that's what didn't happen this time around.

maybe it does but that is why some people choose city jobs with lower pay over private sector jobs for 'supposed' job security.

I heard when they were doing this and I could no believe it!! It was terrible. I mean it's one thing to force them to step down... and then go back to their old position, salary and ranking... but to take it all away and make them the bottom guys is really awful.... in some company's your rank doesn't matter as much, but with city jobs like DSNY your rank is EVERYTHING!!!
I didn't hear if they actually did it. I'm assuming from your post that they did.

But if they had the supervisors demoted to bottom man on the sani totem pole... why would they have to supervise anyone?
or did they not do it just yet?

I'm really just curious. I would ask my DH about it, but he's sleeping before he has to go back into work so I don't want to wake him with this question.

EXACTLY. The salters/sanders were just NOT out there. And as I mentioned, but I realized I was unclear, during prior storms we'd have plows coming when the snow had barely started to fall. Had that been the case we would not be in the predicament we're in.

I don't know whom to blame for it really, though I have my suspicions about it, but even if this was a bad storm, the same procedure that has been followed successfully in the past was NOT followed.

Also, I know people were talking about layoffs, but the commisioner was on last night saying they actually did not lose personnel, so I'm a little confused by all of that.

with personnel being short... there are 2 things going on... and be careful with words they use.

1 - they were on a hiring freeze... they normally hire multiple classes a year. the last class to be hired was 3 years ago. that's hundreds and hundreds of workers not hired when you add it up. they JUST hired a class a few weeks ago but they are still in training and that was only a class of 100. that's the FIRST class they hired in 3 years! So did they LOSE WORKERS? NO... they NEVER GAINED the workers.

2 - this i'm not sure if it happened or not yet... but they promoted a bunch of sani men to supervisor positions... after about a year or so on the job they announced they were taking away their positions, seniority, ranking and pay. And they were demoting them to sani men.. OK but it gets even worse.. they were also moving them to the BOTTOM sani men (as if they were JUST hired). With DSNY and any of the city jobs, EVERYTHING falls under your rankings... not just your pay, but the jobs you get the locations, etc. So in this case did they LOSE WORKERS? NO... they still had same X number of workers.... just not as many supervisors.

So it's a work trickery. They are short workers... compared to years past.

The salters were ONLY out during the storm, not BEFORE the storm. They weren't all called in. There were SOME called in... so I can't say NO salter was out there before the storm...but I can say ALL workers were not out before the storm like they usually have... but ALL workers have been out During the storm starting on Sunday. They should have had men out Sat too... idk if that's bloomberg, the commissioner, or the weather reports.. probably all 3 to blame.

ETA: Because of the budget cuts, they threatened layoffs.. the bottom men would be the ones to go... they are the guys that don't make a lot anyway (and those poor supervisors who would be demoted)..... but instead of doing layoffs, they decided to just not hire anyone and then also dwindle with those retiring... so they didn't actually do layoffs. But they sure did threaten for them A LOT!!!

ahh thank you.

that's so terrible. so they are still supervising then. i can't believe they went through with it. if they HAD to demote them, OK... but WHY make them the bottom guys?? All in all it's good for my sani husband and he and I both still think it's wrong and messed up.

was someone you know a supervisor? I don't think many know this was happening.

I don't want to point a finger at any particular DSNY workers because I know it's a very difficult job. But I really do think these demotions have something to do with it. Maybe the commisioner, or the supervisors, or something, and they just didn't they 110% job they usually do (not in terms of the guys on the trucks, but maybe in planning, calling people in, etc) to teach the city a lesson and gain some leverage. Mayor Koch mentioned a union slowdown on NY1 the other night.

The 2 things are probably related. I really feel that if the salters and plows had been out as early as they have been every storm I can remember before, we would not be in this freaking mess right now.

I have to add that I don't think it's the mayor's fault but I think it's his job to investigate it.

supervisors are out on the street too.. but in reg supervisor cars, they don't plow.
i don't think it's the supervisors call to call them in though.. someone higher up makes that decision.

ETA: I think the commissioner is the one to call them into work... but I think the mayor might also be involved in that... because they have to declare it an emergency state (since funding would have to come from the city's resources)..... i could be wrong. I will ask DH when he gets up.

It's not the bottom guys at all... and I don't think it's those supervisor's either... it's from much higher up than that...
