Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T

ok they have had worse storms..

but have they been undermanned..

had buses blocking intersections..

cars on highways abandonded..

all the balme u r putting on everyone but people who caused this..

im not saying the get all the blame but at least admit people screwed this up to by driving the night of the storm..thats what backed them up

if the people didnt drive the night of the storm they never would have gotten so far behind..so then the next day people had to drive to go to work or whatever and the streets were not plowed and more cars got stuck..and again helping those out took more time away from plowing..

wehere in queens are you?have a lot of family in dsny and if i know the garage i could send out a text

also, yes, it sucks. the hours suck for the workers too..they are long, grueling hours..and it sucks about NYE plans being ruined, we get it. However, again, this is another job you go into knowing this.... it's not the only job where things like this occur. Some military members are gone for over a year and miss every holiday and celebration...they try not to complain. They knew this going into it. It's no big shock. It is what it is.

they know exactly what they r getting into..my dh ahs not complained once bout having to go in or the hours..he is use to it..but he is sick to death of everyone blamning him and every other dsny worker..on tv,papers fb everywhere they r getting bashed and its not fair to them

-dumb people blame the workers

-smart people realize this is a greater issue with the admin, the budget, the big political failures, and bloomberg & his cronies

I'm glad they (workers) are still going forward and trying to fix things promptly. I'm glad we have them...

but there is something more going on in the background, I feel.

yes.. and a major problem is that they had a hiring freeze for about 3 years now... they normally hire multiple classes a year and haven't had a single on in about 3 years. that's a lot of workers down.....

and that's BLOOMBERG.

EXACTLY!! and Heath.. those are the imbeciles we spoke of!! the people who were out the NIGHT OF THAT STORM AND THE MORNING AFTER!!! they really really hindered the process.... there were MORE PEOPLE OUT IN THIS BLIZZARD than past storms. More cars were stuck from driving around... you never heard of cars being stuck and ABANDONED all over the place like this.. on highways and all... that's because people usually stay home in a storm of this magnitude.

just wondering...and have to point this out.......

...people who were driving in the snow and abandoned their cars --- not all of them got bored and decided to run out for Burger King or something.....some were working hard, long hours and were coming home...

.....DH & I were both locked away over the weekend and had no idea how bad it was... he ended up staying overnight at his job (luckily he could) after I drove home and urged him to stay.

also, yes, it sucks. the hours suck for the workers too..they are long, grueling hours..and it sucks about NYE plans being ruined, we get it. You have no RIGHT to start anything. WHO ARE YOU? You don't know anything. I could careless about NYE plans. I care about my parents who can't get off their block because of A$SHOLES that decided they needed to drive to church, get a newspaper, breakfast, ETC. When you hear on the news there is limited visibility all day, STAY HOME. No job is worth your life or your loved ones, not even a days pay. So yes, you are STUPID for attempting to drive in those conditions. Maybe it's people like you that don't take thing seriously enough and just think LIers are too precautious with storms like this. Then again you just had to park in front of your house and not in your driveway because it wasn't "cleared" like your parents. Chat Icon

I agree with the aggravation, and feel for all who are stuck with medical conditions and the like.

and as far as my parking situation and my driveway, it was a mere question....first-time homeowner...had no idea how these things work. I had hear conflicting things. I was curious as to protocol - that's why I asked. No biggie. I had my guy come and clear it out.

t decided they needed to drive to church, get a newspaper, breakfast, ETC. es:

please point out to me ANY NEWS REPORT that said people went out b/c of these things...

TWO DAYS after a snow storm, with NO RELIEF is ridiculous...

luckily, I live in an area where I am ok... but watching 20+ firefighters run down my street, made me a *little* nervous....

I did agree with you and it is very frightening. However Tilde posted yesterday I believe that her family and neighbors had to dig someone out that was trying to get breakfast and yes, the people on my parents block were doing the same thing. My parents live in a co-op and the garage is beneath the building. The driveway to the garage is clear but the street isn't and the MORONS that tried to get out were going on minor errands and blocked the road. They are the IDIOTS.

seriously speak the truth.. if that's what you got out of my post about missing NYE.. then you are sadly mistaken.. my point was it sucks we are missing it AND THEN TO HEAR PEOPLE COMPLAINING THEY AREN'T DOING ANYTHING.... you are missing the whole ending to it.
And actually when he signed up for this I had no idea of this side of the job. Aside from the fact that the job is 8 hour shifts 5 days a week.. not 12-14 hour days 7 days a week for weeks on end. You can't even compare a military position to this.. they sign up knowing they will be away for that time.

And really in storms passed... where were all those people coming home from work out on the roads?? because there were far more people out on the roads in the middle of the night sunday going into monday... more than any other storm.. so if that's the case I would think they would have been out in storms passed, no????

First of all. . . No it is not a joke. I know SEVERAL DSNY workers, several who plowed their streets and their families streets. . . It happens all the time. . . Just like cops help out their own . . .etc.

I am not saying that plows didn't have to plow out ambulances or buses. . . So I don't know what your talking about there. . .
And yes. . . I do know the long hours my dad worked. . . Especially since my dad worked in Midtown on the West Side and lived in Ronkonkoma. The blizzard of 96 he didn't come home for a week and a half. However, the CITY DROPPED THE BALL!

Okay everyone, just relax. DSNY had NOTHING to do with this. Yes, Bloomberg's administration hasn't hired a class in 3 years so that has put a damper on those plowing. Unfortunately complaining on a message board won't get you anywhere. I believe the best you can do is to write your councilman/person and let them know how dissatisfied you were with the entire situation including times/days you called and if you know of times plows tried to come down and if enough people write then maybe something can happen. I don't know, maybe I'm being ignorant about it, but I'm just as disgusted and I live in Nassau! They need to hire more manpower!!!

actually what we are saying is that the DSNY workers are working hard each day and night and they are out there plowing... no one is really defending the city on this.... i said time and time again that they are short due to a hiring freeze... and so did she.

also... "how dsny works??" really? bc i know many dsny workers who's own blocks aren't plowed in my area. My block is plowed but that's ONLY because a bus comes down it. if it wasn't for that bus we wouldn't be plowed either.

they are working on their routes. that's not to say there aren't a few bad seeds.. but the workers we know are breaking their backs shoveling... and plowing like crazy.

Please do reread what I wrote.. I said when he signed up for this I, I, I, I had no idea of this.... I don't know if he realized it either. I don't think he did but IDK.

I know about overtime... but NOT about these hours. i deal with it.. it's cool.. the hours aren't the problem.. it's the complaining on end.... when you know someone is out there working hard all night long... and you hear people complaining about the job they are doing.. it's really annoying. that's my point.

And YES it sure is weeks on end DURING a snowstorm! last storm Feb of 2010 they worked almost the ENTIRE MONTH... with the exception of maybe the first week.

I really don't think you are reading what I am writing fully.

ETA: Did I not write that it is an 8 hr a day job 5 days a week.. but they do the extra hours and days during a snow storm?? you quoted it.

i hear what you mean, and I'm sorry if idiots on FB are being stupid, but no one here on LIF, where we are all discussing this, is saying anything negative about the workers. And, if they do think that, I am sure they are wrong.

I know well enough that even if you see a truck with a worker sitting in front of a deli, it doesn't even necessarily mean he is on a break. He could have run out of gas or had an engine breakdown and is waiting for backup support. I know how it is - and I know they want to do a good job.

just like even the snowplows getting stuck in snow - because that's how bad some parts were- so do other workers out there, who unfortunately had to be out for their jobs.

actually what we are saying is that the DSNY workers are working hard each day and night and they are out there plowing... no one is really defending the city on this.... i said time and time again that they are short due to a hiring freeze... and so did she.

I'm in Nassau and DH works for a village and we live in said village and that doesn't mean our street get plowed and our driveway doesn't get blocked in. His mother lives in the same village and deals with the same stuff. They are trying to clear the streets. Digging cars our isn't their priority or their job at all!

you are right.. it's not their job.. but they are making it their priority in this storm... they are getting calls for the cars that are stuck and the plow drivers are being called off their routes to dig out the stuck cars with a shovel.
so a driver might have lets say 40 blocks a night to plow... they can get to maybe 20 of them because they spend the rest of the time freeing cars.

now that's not the norm... usually there isn't this many cars stuck and they aren't getting these calls... but with this storm they are.

seriously speak the truth.. if that's what you got out of my post about missing NYE.. then you are sadly mistaken.. my point was it sucks we are missing it AND THEN TO HEAR PEOPLE COMPLAINING THEY AREN'T DOING ANYTHING.... you are missing the whole ending to it.
And actually when he signed up for this I had no idea of this side of the job. Aside from the fact that the job is 8 hour shifts 5 days a week.. not 12-14 hour days 7 days a week for weeks on end. You can't even compare a military position to this.. they sign up knowing they will be away for that time.

Thank You for this.

I see what you are saying as well.

And LIF isn't saying outright that "the DSNY workers aren't working" but there are some who are complaining that their streets are not plowed yet. I, as well as a few others were trying to explain the situation as to WHY their blocks aren't plowed yet. But I don't think people want to hear it or understand it or whatever the case may be. That's where the tension stems from.
