Layla Ate Chocolate and I Had the Scare of My Life!
Went to my brother's for the day New Year's day and left Layla at home. When I came home I noticed aluminum foil and ripped up ziplock bags all over the floor and knew immediately what she had gotten into. I left all the holiday cake and chocolate in the center of the dining room table as I have always done and where she has never (so I thought) been able to get at. I think what happened is she counter surfed the table and pulled the runner and was able to pull the items off the table.
My ex-FIL was a vet and since she had once before eaten about a dozen rainbow cookies with the chocolate icing he said she would be fine (and she was), but not this time, unfortunately. The diarrhea started and then the vomiting, nonstop! I looked on line and read that the type of chocolate will vary the toxicity level. Turns out she ate semi-sweet chocolate which has a high level of Theobromine (where white and milk chocolate have the lowest levels), a compound of caffeine that can cause all kinds of life threatening ailments in dogs. I called the emergency hospital in Westbury and they said to take away food and water for 12 hours and she should be fine. Thank God she is okay, but I didn't sleep that whole night.
I learned that once dogs have chocolate, they they will crave it like humans do and will sniff it out! More of a reason now to put it in a place where she never reach it!
