I had the scare of my life last night
Well I have been in formula he!! for the past week. Anthony was on Similac, but had spit up and gas issues. The doc told me to put him on Good Start for 72 hrs and see if it helped. It helped with the gas but certainly not the spit up. So we moved him again to Emfamil Gentle Ease. The minute I gave it to him I kinda didn't like it because his spit up was very phlem-ish. I decided to keep following the doctors orders though, against my better judgement. Last night I gave him his bottle @ 4pm. At @ 8pm I was getting ready to feed him again and I was holding him, looking at and talking to DH. I look down at Anthony and his mouth was open like he was crying, but he wasn't making a sound, and his face was a deep red/purple. He wasn't really breathing. My DH got up like a flash of lightening and started patting him on the back face down. He immediately started crying bloody murder. A long string of phlemish drool came hanging out of his mouth and he started coughing. We finally got him calm after @ 1/2 hr and I sent my DH out to the store for Similac again. I can deal with a little gas and spit up, but I NEVER want to go through that again!! I think it was the scariest moment of my life (2nd of course to when he was being strangled by his umbilical cord when I was in labor).
This is in no way a bad post about the formula, I know it has helped alot of babies on here, it was just not the right one for mine. I do want to urge all of you mommies to trust your gut instinct though, so you will NEVER have to face something like this. I can't even begin to think what would have happened if he wasn't right there in my arms in that moment.
PS ~ He is perfectly fine now and I am awaiting a call back from the ped.

Re: I had the scare of my life last night
I can't imagine how scary that must have been
So glad to hear he is okay...and you're absolutely right...every baby is different and you MUST trust your instinct...DD was on Gentleease for a while and she was a different baby - glassy eyed, lethargic, her skin broke out....but like you said, I know it's helped a lot of people on here...
AGain and glad he's okay!!!

OMG how scary
I'm so sorry you had to go through that nobody should ever get a scare like that.
Isn't it crazy how daddy's just jump into things. Sometimes us mommies are get so paralized by emotions. Your DH gets a big for staying calm and doing just the right thing.
Perhaps he has an allergy? I would bring it up to your pediatrition and ask that DS get tested.
Thank goodness he's OK. And you too!

Re: I had the scare of my life last night
OMG I am glad everything worked out. Let me know what your ped says because according to the peds in the practise I go to, a baby can not choke on mucus only solids. I had asked because my DD was super phlemy and we had a scary occassion where it looked like she was choking, so I kinda don't believe them.

Re: I had the scare of my life last night
Poor Anthony. I hope you manage to find a formula that works for him. I know how frustrating this must be for you, Dee!! Trust your instincts and go with it. Only you, as his mommy, really knows what's best.

Re: I had the scare of my life last night
How scary! I am happy to hear all turned out alright.
My brother was allergic to milk based formula as a baby, and producing alot of mucus was the first sign of the allergy. He too stopped breathing -thank god my mother was also in the right place, at the right time.
I am sure your pedi will know best, but wanted to share that experience...

Re: I had the scare of my life last night
OMG - so so sorry to hear that - so glad everything is ok!!!
Is your baby on Similac Sensitive? It helped DD with gas...I use the Sensitive RS at night to help with the spit up...it does. I just can't afford to have her on RTF all day and night...and RS doesn't come in powder.
Good luck!!!

I know! I really did consider it a little miracle! The ped wants me to try cereal next, but some people (from reading the boards) think it is a bit soon becuase of allergies but neither DH or I have any food allergies
