identical twins...or not??

Ok so this may seem really silly, but I'm just gonna say it anyway. MY DH is an identical twin.....supposedly. I'm not convinced of it though for many reasons. He was born in 1977 so I don't know how much they actually knew about twins back then, but I would guess not a lot. MIL didn't even know she was having twins until 2 weeks before they were born when the doctor heard 2 heartbeats and it was confirmed by X-RAY! I asked MIL how do they know that they are identical and she said that the placenta was send to a lab after they were born. Is this 100% accurate? I told DH once that I didn't think that he and his brother were identical and he just laughed.

Not sure about the identical placenta test. But wanted to say DH is a fraternal twin and his mother also did not know she was having twins until 2 weeks before! Thats so crazy!!

RIGHT!! could you imagine! MIL still has the X-Ray. It's very faded, but it's so cool. You can see two heads and two spinal cords.

Re: identical twins...or not??

Not sure. My dad has twin sisters and I asked him if they were identical or fraternal and he has no idea. Of course his mom didn't even know she was having twins until after she delivered the first one. Of course that's 50 years ago...but so crazy.

Now the testing is done via bloodwork, its a DNA test. I will probably have my twins tested because although they claim identical one could never really be sure unless they are tested.

Yeah I would think that a dna test would be the only way to know for sure. My cousin wanted to have her twins tested, but insurance wouldn't pay for it so she didn't do it.

Do they look identical now or in baby pictures? If there was only one placenta, they could be, maybe they tested to see if 2 fused together. Though I don't think they knew that could happen back then.

Re: identical twins...or not??

My friend had identical twins a few years ago and she was told that the ONLY way to tell was DNA. This was from her Dr.

Re: identical twins...or not??

They looked pretty identical as babies and kids, but I guess around 12 years old they started looking different. Now, they look very different. One is about an inch taller than the other, one has a bump in his nose and the other doesn't. And besides physical things, there are other things. I got pregnant with twins (one vanished) and there are no twins on my side of the family. I know that it could just happen, but it just seems weird to me. Also, DH had cancer a few years ago and his brother did not. The doctors explained that it could happen where an identical twin gets sick and the other doesn't, but it's not usually the case. Although there aren't too many studies on it, so who knows for sure.

I know it really doesn't matter wether they are identical or fraternal, but it just bothers me that nobody else picked up on these things but me? If I were a twin I think that I would want to know. Maybe I'm wrong though, I don't know.

I would want to know also if I were a twin. Which is why we've decided to get the DNA testing done when ours are born. We've been told from the beginning they are identical because there is only one placenta visible, but I know the only sure fire way to know is by the DNA test.

It's never too late to get tested. Have you asked your DH if he wants to know?

Re: identical twins...or not??

I mentioned it to him once and he doesn't really seem to care either way. Plus, his brother lives in another country now and only comes home to visit a couple of times a year. Maybe one day they will come around! Until then, I will always wonder.

Re: identical twins...or not??

I have a story that is the exact opposite of this. I have twin cousins who look IDENTICAL but were told they had separate placentas and they were fraternal. (This was 31 years ago.) My whole life I grew up thinking they were identical though bc you could not tell them apart and one day a few years ago my aunt said no they actually fraternal - my mouth hit the floor. I don't even believe it! How could anyone believe it is the question I ask…they look exactly alike!

They still look so much alike too but do have some different features…one has a more pointy chin and just little things. Anyway I sware they are identical and I want them to get the genetic testing done!
