Anyone's DC NEED a bottle to go to sleep??
Do you put your child in the crib with the bottle to feed themselves? Do you do this with naps too?
I dont even remember how it started but DD can not and will not go to sleep unless I lay her down in her crib WITH the bottle. I hate doing it but she will literally scream for hours or even until she pukes b/c she thinks she needs it to close her eyes. Sometimes she doesnt even drink the bottle, just keeps it in her mouth and passes out. So naturally I try the pacifier and she just throws it onto the floor and screams.
How can I break this? I try rocking her at night at least, giving her the bottle on the glider until she sleeps then i transfer to the crib. It worked once in the last week. IDK what else to do.
SHe's going to be 1 yr in 2 weeks so I know sippy cups are coming and i'm scared to death of them!
at this point should I leave it until i have to wean her off the bottle?

My DD is exactly the same way at 7 months. I know I need to break her of this too but right now it's just easier to get her to sleep that way. I just need her to sleep so I do what it takes. But I need to stop it. I know. Hopefully this thread will have some good ideas!

I can top that DD has to fall asleep in our arms WITH a bottle. She won't hold her own bottle.
She STTN so I don't want to rock the boat too much. . .

Re: Anyone's DC NEED a bottle to go to sleep??
DS was about 9 months old when I put him to bed with a bottle because I was sick and he was ready for bed and no one else was home..I did it for 4 days and it stuck. At that time it was only his night bottle. Then it turned into his nap bottle too. I tried to break the habit at 1. I would let him lay in the bed with me and drink his bottle. That lasted about 5 minutes before he was all over the place...Back into the crib he went.. He is now 15 months old and still gets his bottle at nap time in his crib. As soon as he wakes up, I brush his teeth. At night I try so hard to get him to settle down with me and feed him, doesn't always work... I am going to start to let him watch a little tv while drinking his night time bottle and then put him to bed. He can fall asleep without it. Just takes longer...I hope you find something that works...

Thats another thing! The damn sippy cups. I have a whole cabinet full of every different type they make. She flat out refuses. Ive tried just giving her those during the day and she will actually just stay thirsty b/c she's spiteful lol The only one she likes (and by like I mean might take a few sips from) is one that has a nipple top that almost looks like a bottle? Figures. She just doesnt get the straw ones, she chews the straw. Her baba is her thing. idk how to break her.

DD will also only go to sleep (naps too) if she has a bottle. Like Tilde said, she STTN, so I don't want to shake things up too much.

Just be careful b/c this is a major risk for baby bottle caries...try to make sure there is water in the bottle and not formula or juice.

My son is 2 and still goes to sleep with a bottle. He doesn't go to sleep with it in his mouth but he lays down and drinks it before nap and bedtime. Oh well. He'll give it up at some point.

My son doesn't fall asleep with it in his mouth either. When he is done with it, he throws it out of the crib...He prefers to drink it in his crib then for me to hold him or lay in bed with him..He is switching to sippy's during the day and will only have a bottle at night for a few more months...It is what he likes.

Re: Anyone's DC NEED a bottle to go to sleep??
I rock DS with a bottle before naps/bed. I have no clue but, he manages to go to sleep fine at daycare (hes' only pt).
Usually, I put him down drowsy though (but, awake).
We're transitioning to sippy cups - DS was refusing numerous ones in the beginning but, likes the Nuby soft spout ones. He will only drink water in them right now though.

DS is 13 months and he always need a bottle to fall asleep, for naps and bedtime. But he has to fall asleep laying in our bed first and then when he passes out we put him in the crib.
I know eventually we will have to deal with it but we just got him sleeping in his crib. He wouldn't sleep anywhere but our bed for months.

Re: Anyone's DC NEED a bottle to go to sleep??
try an empty bottle, maybe?
i don't want to scare anyone, but my little cousin did this until she was almost 2 yrs old and rotted out all of her baby teeth. She had little brown stumps until her baby teeth fell out and adult teeth grew in.

We take him to the dentist already b/c I am paranoid about this. I think the big difference is if they sleep with it dripping in their mouth vs. drinking it then going to sleep. I know it's not ideal and we have to stop some time but I am not ready for the no sleep battle.

we have the same thing...the cabinet full of every sippy cup out there! she drinks her water great from a regular sippy from munchkin - but refuses milk in ANYTHING but her baba. i've even tried putting milk in her regular sippy - but she takes a drink and is like - ew. no.
the straw thing is a basic thing to teach once you know how.....
get a few disposable straws.
get some water in a cup.
get some water into the straw & stop up the straw....ya know - like if you were playing with it.
put it in DC's mouth...see if the child will suck...if they do, they will get the water.
if not, let a little of the water into their mouth...a little at a time...allowing the child to realize there's something in the straw that i want...
it should work after a couple of tries.. :)
