Ok so I work in a insurance office. I am currently looking for a new job bc the current owners will be selling in the next 3-5 years and i am kinda bored here. Also my Dh employer just changed there benefits and they now stink. Well since DH has a great salary I dont want him to look for a new position and I decided that I would start looking.
So I find out one of the big body shops that we deal with is hiring. My office is very friendly with the owner. I actually just went to a hockey game with them. Would you apply for that job?
I am concerned it might make it awkward

Why not?
Is it a similar role or will you be getting out of the ins industry? Either way, you need to not put all your eggs in one basket but you also shouldn't just ignore an opportunity.
You could ask them to be discreet and you should know by now if they would be. If not then you need to know you're about to put what's left in your job in jeporady. I don't know if you can tell the boss you were doing this or not. It all depends on the relationship you have at work and with these people. Sticky to be sure but I'd apply.
Then again I'd also be sure it wasn't my only place and I was confident enough to deal with any backlash, if any.

In the insurance industry people switch jobs and companies all the time. It wouldn't bother me to work there. You should probably make sure the benefits would be adequate for you, as well as job hours, pay, responsibilities, etc.

Yes! It's called Networking...
First of all you have a legitimate excuse, they are selling in a few years and your want to be secure by then. Second of all, you know them well so you will most likely get the job...
