clogged duct?
i started getting pain in my left breast. sharp shooting pain and i think i felt a lump. I am breastfeeding.
do you think its a clogged duct? or what is that infection called? it hurts!!
should i stop breastfeeding and pumping on that side? it started hurting in between feedings, so i wonder if it would hurt during a feeding? the pain comes and goes.
i have a peditrician appt tomorrow, is this something i could ask her???

Re: clogged duct?
It does sound like a clogged duct. Keep nursing as much as you can, only that will help drain it. Massaging your breast in a hot shower may help alleviate the pain, starting from the top of your breast and working your way down. Try putting warm compresses on your breast before nursing and try nursing your DC standing over him/her while he's laying on his back on the bed. Sounds ridiculous, but gravity does help. You can take Tylenol/Motrin for the pain too. If you develop fever, it may be infected. This is definitely something you can talk about with your pediatrician! I had gotten all the above info from mine. Kellymom.com is also a great resource and has a lot of information about clogged ducts/mastitis. Good luck, I've had clogged ducts and milk blisters before, it is NOT fun

Re: clogged duct?
Definitely ask the pediatrician! Do you have a hand pump? I had a clogged duct and took the hand pump into the shower with me so I could massage, pump, and apply heat all at the same time. It killed me to dump the breast milk but I was in so much pain/discomfort at that point that I didn't care. Good luck, and feel better!!!

For future reference, there's no reason to dump the milk. It's perfectly safe.
To the OP, I know it hurts but you have to try and nurse through it, nurse on that side as much as you can. Also massage, warm compresses and hot water help.

Oh, thanks :) But I meant I was dumping it because I was pumping rather carelessly in the shower Water started getting into the bottle I was pumping into, so I just ditched the bottle altogether and hand pumped away for relief!

Re: clogged duct?
Sounds like a clogged duct.
Take some Ibuprofen; that'll help with the pain. So will a warm shower. Keep nursing though; that always unclogged me!!
