Career Change...a few questions

If we stay in NY...I am going to decide on a new career.

Any one know of a good place to research careers? I would want to find a career that there is a market for.

I have a B.S. in Accounting/Management and a M.S. in secondary Math Education. So I was considering getting my MBA but not sure where that even leads me.

Secondly, what about my resume. The last 7 years are education related. I have other experiences prior to student teaching but that could leave me with a 5 page resume.

How would I put together a good resume for a career change. Because I guess I would want to show my past experience and teaching experience?

I would say LIF is a good place to start. I think people are brutally honest on here about the pros/cons for any job area.

I'll start: I'm a social worker and I don't really advise people to go into this field right now. The market in this area is totally saturated.

It's also so much money to pay in terms of a graduate degree when you are only looking at starting salaries in the high 30-'s-mid-40's if you are lucky.

I have been working in social work since 1998 and have sent out a few resumes on LI recently for $hits and giggles and no one even RESPONDED.

I would put the relevant info and leave gaps. At the bottom maybe squeeze in a line or 2 about the gap - Add'l work experiences in other fields?

Then again, not sure if that will make them think you change careers often...

sorry, guess not very helpful.

Re: Career Change...a few questions

MBA degrees arent paying dividends in this economy unless an employer is picking up the tab and/or the MBA comes from a really top notch school (ie Wharton, etc).

If you have a set career path in mind, I would try to get an internship in that area first and make as many contacts as possible in the field. An additional graduate degree isn't going to magically improve your resume unless there is something on your resume/experience that would immiediately translate to a skill sought after by an employer.

Career changing is a very big investment - there is a book out there called "What Color is Your Parachute" which I think asks some very good questions and offers great advice on how to translate your current skills into a new job/career.

Hope this helps!
