For those with Inground pools...cost to maintain?
My DH and I have been looking at several houses, some of which have inground pools. While we love the thought of having a pool we are not real handy people who could maintain it ourselves.
Question is...how much does it cost to hire someone to open and close the pool every year? Any additional costs? What is the increase in your utility bills for those summer months (water, electric, etc.)

DH opens and closes the pool himself. It really isn't a big deal. You take off the cover, put in chemicals, run the filter, vacuum the bottom of the pool and in a few days you are good to go.
We have an aquabot, which is a little machine that vacuums the bottom of the pool for us instead of standing there with the vacuum. So much easier.
The chemicals (which are not cheap), extra electricity and extra water come to a few thousand per year, but we love our pool and its well worth it. But I can understand why some people don't want a pool, it is work and $$.

Hi- Pools are expensive!! 250 dollars to open our inground and about 150 to close. We have one of those robots which allows us not to have to worry about hiring someone weekly to vacuum it. The robot cost us 800 dollars. A power vac from a pool company cost roughly 75 dollars an hour.
Chemicals... have to buy shock all the time (monthly about 80 dollars) Chlorine is about 200 for the season. To run the filter for the season adds about 500 dollars total onto our electric bill for july august and september. We just had a new liner put in last year and that cost 3500.

We also have the aquabot, its awesome but we have a spa that spills over into the pool, so we have someone that comes and cleans both weekly. Its $45 a week. I checked a few other local places and they were all higher, 50-60 ish.
The opening costs us around $500  and to be honest, I'm not exactly SURE but I think the closing is somewhere around 300...this includes the chemicals, etc. We've had lots of issues this year, getting valves replaced (2 of them @ $350 a piece) and then a ripped liner (another $500 to fix when all was said and done)...its been one thing after another.
Gunite is probably less expensive to maintain than vinyl.
We do balanced electrical so I can't tell you how much it spikes that bill. I can tell you we burn thru lots of extra oil heating it though...we LOVE having a pool and we love having a house to have people over...so for that, its great...if you feel unsure, its probably more of a headache for you. DH and I always both wanted a pool, so for us it was a no brainer!

You can do salt water also, my parents just switched over to this, don't know if it costs less though

opening ~400 (with chemicals)
closing ~250
chemicals for season ~300 (not included in opening)
our water bills go from about $10-$150 for three months, but a lot of that may be from sprinklers too.
our electricity bills go from about $150/200-$400/500 (but that's with a/c) each month in the summer

our openeing is $350. Same for close.
Our guy charges $60 a week for vaccume.
We are renting and are now having problems. Things o ask and look for in a pool:
1. If its Vinyl, ask how old the liner is. Look and see if its coming off at the sides. You will CLEARLY see if its separated.
2. Ask about leaks and maintenance. We have leaks and didnt know it!
3. If its a gunnite pool ask when was the last time they marble dusted. Thats what keeps the gunnite smoooth. It has to re-marble dust every 10 years and is about $8000.
