Layoffs NYC
My chapter leader seems to think this is a real possibility and it would be worse then expected, reaching into fifth year and special ed. Any info in your schools?

Hey Moe, my gut is telling me that it will be less than the 4,000 projection. I recently read an article that there are an additional 1,000 teachers retiring than they orig. thought. I also heard that they froze hiring/transfering of licenses so that they can audit how many teachers are in the system based on license area. So it sounds like they are doing what they can to bring the number down. I also do not think the city council will approve the budget with such a large amount of layoffs. I do think something is going to happen, I am just hoping it is not as bad as what they are saying.
You should check gothamschools.org daily they post any news that is circulating about the NYC schools system.

Teachers in my school in their fifth year were told they are on the chopping block. Our chapter leader told us layoffs went from 4,100 to 5,000. Hope she is wrong.

They've been threatening them every year for the past three years. Don't panic yet.

this is so frustrating!! DH and I are both teachers hired around the same time (2007) and we are both sitting on pins and needles wondering what is happening. It's not bad enough that I got excessed, now I have to worry about layoffs! Enough is enough already! vent over....

I do not teach in NYC, but I think it is ridiculous that they will not let you know if you are laid off until July. Most districts let you know by April.
