More Camera Questions! (Filters/Camera bags)
You guys are so helpful for a photography newbie like myself! I'm actually leaving for Ireland in 2 weeks  and I want to ready my camera for it! I've already purchased an extra battery, memory card, and my 55 mm lens. I also have the 18-55mm kit lens. I want to buy a really good carrying case to keep all my stuff safe. I'm also interested in possibly getting a polarizing filter. I'll be taking a lot of outdoor/landscape photos and, from what I've read, polarizing filters really bring out the landscape and the sky. I really like the effect it gives it. My question is what's a good price for a polarizing filter? Should I get it for my 55mm or my kit lens? Or someone mentioned a "step down ring" so that I can use the same filter for both. Would you recommend that? Lastly, any particular brand you'd recommend? I've heard good things about Hoya, Kenko, and B&W. Thank you all so, so, so much for your help!

I would get one polarizing filter per lens since they protect them lens as well. I have used Hoya and have been happy. I wouldn't get more then a $40 filter unless your planning on selling images.
As far as cases. It depends on what your carrying. I have Domke Large Shoulder Bag which I do like but its only when I want to pack light. If I need a ton of equipment I use my day job's Think Tank Airport Security bag (i need to buy my own its just a bit pricey) but I don't think you need the big guns for what your carrying. As far as backpacks I haven't jumped into purchasing one since I like my sling or the rolling bag.

This is perfect! Yeah, the equipment I listed above is everything I'm taking with me, plus my battery charger and USB cord. A rolling case is out of the question, definitely looking for something more backpack-y and lightweight. Thank you so much though! This is very helpful!

My dad has a Think Tank Street Walker Harddrive 480 (which i will be borrowing for my next shoot) but its too much for what your carrying. I would go with the one posted above.
Also perhaps score a lightweight tripod or monopod because a lot of places don't let flash photography and you will need it.

I did not think that the polarizing filter made a huge difference but now that I have been taking photos on Fire Island I see a difference. When you compare the price of a good filter to the price of other camera equipment it does not seem expensive!

Gotcha! I think I'm going to just get the filter for the 50mm for right now and then I can get one for my kit lens if I feel the need in the future.

I really like my Tamrac slingback bag. It's really comfortable to carry with you all day, easy to access the camera. I usually just sling it over my shoulder and let it hang on my back but you can also strap on the waist strap for added support (and security)

I've read that if you have a lot of new equipment it's a good idea to take copies of your receipts so they don't try to hit you up at customs for having purchased it abroad.
Regarding tripods or monopods, you're better off with a small monopod for travel. Lots of public places, cathedrals, etc. won't let you set up tripods. You can sometimes get away with a monopod since it's right next to your body - no extended legs that can trip someone.
Needless to say, don't check your camera equipment, carry-on only. Check with all the airlines you're traveling with regarding policies. You'll probably have to pack a tripod or monopod (potential weapon), and that's probably safe enough but camera and lenses should stay with you at all times.

Definitely some good things to think about! My camera isn't new (and you can tell   ) so I think I should be good on that. But I'm *definitely* carrying on my camera bag. If I do bring a tripod or monopod, I'll probably pack it in my luggage. Thanks again!

I carried mine all over Disney World for a few days and it was never uncomfortable or pulling on my shoulder.
