swaddling?

We swaddle 4 mth old DD for naps and bedtime. She starting rolling back to belly today. Should we stop swaddling? I'm wondering if we should stop swaddling for naps because i don't think they'll do it at daycare and she'll start going in a few weeks Chat Icon

Re: swaddling?

you should definitely stop swaddling once she can roll. she'll need her arms to help her lift herself.

Re: swaddling?

i had a feeling ...she has been waking up a lot at night too, maybe she'll sleep better if she's not swaddled?! she rolls back to belly better than belly to back but she can do both. i'm afraid if she rolls onto her belly she'll get stuck, even if she's not swaddled.

Re: swaddling?

Ugh, having the exact same problem right now. The other day DD started crying during her nap (while swaddled) and I went in and she had flipped onto her belly!!!! In the miracle blanket!!!! I nearly flipped out.

She has also been waking up a lot at night which she has never really done, plus breaking out of the swaddle.

She's 4.5 months.

Re: swaddling?

We stopped swaddling at 3mo for this reason and bc he was breaking out of the swaddle. At this point, they don't really need to be swaddled and his ped was actually surprised that I was still swaddling at 3mo. We moved him into his room at the same time and he became a very happy belly sleeper. I say stop swaddling... I'm sure she will sleep much better without being restricted.

Re: swaddling?

if you don't want to quit swaddling cold turkey Chat Icon, maybe you could just swaddle her with her arms out- just a thought

Re: swaddling?

I think you need to stop, just because of the rolling. My DS was a late roller (not until 7m) so we were able to swaddle him for a long time! I thought stopping would be a nightmare, but it was actually not bad at all. After the first couple of nights, it was like nothing changed. Good luck!

Re: swaddling?

Going through this right now too! DD is having the 4 month sleep regression (although getting back on track after about a week-ish). I stopped swaddling for naps a few weeks ago which has been okay. I tried to not swaddle for bedtime last night and she just couldn't get it together. Her arms and legs were working over time. She freaked out. She fell asleep for a few hours and woke herself up. I put the swaddle on (b/c I needed sleep Chat Icon ) and she went right out for 9 more hours!

She has rolled over and so I worry about her doing it in the swaddle.

I don't know what to do either!

Definitely stop swaddling.....Impressive she's able to roll without using her arms and legs for leverage. Maybe look into getting her a sleep sack (without the swaddle) so she can still stay warm at night but have the freedom of her arms and legs. My DS is the same age and that is what we do at night. I tried not to swaddle for naps today which has resulted in DD sleeping for a grand total of less than one hour since 730 this morning!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Tonight I put DD in the swaddle, but I left it pretty loose, giving her the option of what to do with her arms.
I see her on the monitor and she has bent her arms up and she's holding on to the top of the swaddle with her little fingers sticking out, but her arms are still inside.
So funny and so uncomfortable looking!
