Reasons for C-section
I am hoping to get a few answers to this question.
What are the many reasons an OB would schedule a c-section or have to do an emergency c-section?
I really want to have a vaginal birth so I am just wondering what could change that for me.
TIA

Re: Reasons for C-section
I had a c-section and the reason was because my DD was measuring large on the sonograms.
I was due on a Friday, went in on a Monday for a sonogram, and she was measuring over 10 lbs. So he called the hospital and scheduled the c-section for that Wednesday.
She ended up being 9 lbs 10 oz, and while I have heard or women having vaginal births at that size, I am really glad I had a c-section. I was lucky to have healed well afterwards.

Re: Reasons for C-section
I ended up having a c section. My water broke, I went to the hospital and started having contractions. I got my epi and they moved me into the delivery room. I pushed AND pushed AND pushed. But apparently my was not budging. The dr eventually called it a c section.

Re: Reasons for C-section
Scheduled c/s: * The mother had a baby by cesarean in the past * The baby is not coming out head first * The baby needs to be delivered weeks before the due date * The baby is very large * The mother has an infection, such as herpes or HIV. These can spread to the baby during a vaginal birth. * The mother is carrying 2 or more babies * The mother has a condition called “placenta previa.” The placenta is the organ that brings the baby nutrients and oxygen and carries away waste. In placenta previa, this organ blocks the way to the vagina. As a result, the baby can’t get out on its own.
Emergency/Unplanned c/s: * Contractions (the tightening of the uterus that happens during labor) are not strong enough to get the baby out * The baby is too big * The mother’s pelvis is too small (the pelvis is the set of bones around your hips and vagina) * The baby is in an odd position, such as sideways or chin-first
Other reasons that c-sections are done are:
* The baby’s life is in danger; for example, because its heart rate is too slow. * The mother’s life is in danger; for example, because she is bleeding too much.

Re: Reasons for C-section
my reasons for having a C
baby was measuring on the large(r) size though born at 8.7 lbs. he never dropped so I never dilated or effaced. high fluids (which is likely the reason he never dropped and I didnt progress)
I also have a clotting disorder which would have made a long, stressful induction dangerous - could have caused massive bleeding.
oh, and I was past my EDD. all of that combined = Csection.

Re: Reasons for C-section
Mine wasn't planned, and it also wasn't an "emergency". Basically, my water broke on 10/8, and after a while I progressed to 4cm and then just kind of stopped progressing. DS' head was pushing against a closed pelvic wall with each contraction, & so they told me NOT to push. That was pretty miserable!!!!! Now we were approaching the early hours of 10/10.
So, after the epidural, I just stopped progressing and his head was still pushing down. After a total of 31 hours, even though baby was not in distress, they felt it was time, since it had been nearly 18 hours stuck at 4cm. I really wanted to wait longer, but my OB just said I've been at the same stage for too long.
So, even though he wasn't in danger, except his head was really cone shaped when he was taken out, they felt I just wouldn't go past 4cm. Good luck!!!

Re: Reasons for C-section
I labored for 17 hours and it was decided that it just wasn't going to happen on it's own for me. My water broke in the beginning on it's own and my OB was worried about increased risk of infection.
Received a few rounds of pitocin to help get contractions going and it got me to 7.5 cm dilated, but I was stuck there for 3 hours. The baby never dropped either and was still pretty high. All of this combined became the reason the OB decided a c/s would be the best option for me at the time.

These are the best, most common reasons. For me, DS wrapped the cord around his neck twice during labor and created a knot aka cord compression. The doctor wanted him out asap once that was discovered.

My DS was breech. That was the only reason I needed the c/s.

same here, DD was breech. I will also be having a c/s this time, but that's just because I had on already and it's recommended that I do it again.

Re: Reasons for C-section
My experience was similar to some of the other ladies. My labor just didn't progress and after 29 hours I was still only 4 cm. I had an epi and pitocin, the dr broke my water and nothing seemed to help. Then DS's heart rate started acting erratic so they thought it best to get him out.

Re: Reasons for C-section
My labor stalled. I made it to 4 cm and after hours of pitocin and contracting every 90 seconds, I was still 4. I really wanted a vaginal birth but honestly, the c section wasn't bad at all. If you do end up with one, make sure you walk as much as possible (once they give you the ok). I've heard of getting major gas pains but I lucked out and didn't have any problems at all.

Re: Reasons for C-section
I ALMOST had to have one with DS because he was breech. But he flipped, so I was lucky.
My cousin was told she ma have to have one if her baby was "too big", 10 lbs or more.

Re: Reasons for C-section
i had a somewhat emergency C at 33w1d. i was dealing with preeclampsia and HELLP but they were going to induce until we found out that was transverse breech. it ended up being a godsend that i had a section because i had placenta accreta (where the placenta is grown into the uterine wall) and if i had a vaginal delivery i probably would've needed emergency surgery to remove the placenta and likely would have lost my uterus too.

Re: Reasons for C-section
My reason for my 1st C was I was border line preclampsia BP was high so I had my DD 2 weeks early, then had to have a c with my son (incase of uterine rupture), and will be having my 3rd C.

Re: Reasons for C-section
my dr. called it a "failed induction" I was induced at 41 weeks and after 12 hours on pitocin with my water broke, I never progressed past 1.5 cm.. I personally think there were many ways that it could have been avoided but it is what it is.. If your dr mentions an induction and there are no medical concerns except that you are just late i'd ask them to wait as long as possible to induce.

Re: Reasons for C-section
Im crashing but i had platypoid pelvis. Basically my pelvis is shaped the wrong way for the baby to fit threw. Although you can try for vaginal birth its not something that is usally possable. The docter said i would labor for hours and end up in a emergnecy C-section. Also your pelvis could erupt from all the pressure. So we choice to do the schd. c-section.

Re: Reasons for C-section
I had a c-section at exactly 41 weeks. I was completely sealed (no dilation at all) DS was very high up and he was on the bigger side. My OB doesn't let his patients go past 41 weeks. He didn't think I was induceable and the chances of me ending up with a c-section were very high, so we just went for it.

Re: Reasons for C-section
I had an emergency c-section because baby couldn't get passed my pubic bone. Then after that it was just assumed I was having c-sections going forward.

Re: Reasons for C-section
I'll be honest and I really hope I don't get flamed for this, but I had a C/S because I wanted one, it was elective, I was afraid to give VB , afraid of pushing, the pain and everything else, so I asked my OBGYN at 5 months and she didn't even try to talk me out of it. Yes the baby was measuring big and I'm tiny, but that wasn't really a reason, since the dr told me I could try VB and see. Now I wish my OBGYN had fought me on this and "forced" me to do a VB, I have regretted having a C/S every days since , first of all I still ended up in labor pains for hours and hours (contractions every 7 min) before they had a room available since I went in labor the day before my scheduled C/S, then I was in so much pain for weeks and weeks, had all kinds of problems with my incision, and took me almost 2 years to finally feel like my old self again. It must be nature's way of punishing me for not even trying VB. I just hope I don't have the same issues with this one
