BF moms that are SAHM....Which pump?

So I am wondering if the Medala Freestyle pump is necessary if I will be home with the baby. I plan on BFing, but since I will home and usually able to directly BF would the Medala swing pump suffice?

I would like to make my life as easy as possible so if the Freestyle really is much better than I will get it, but if it will be a waste due to my needs then I would rather save the 100 bucks.

Please help TY


ETA: Would you buy a used pump on ebay? Do you think that it would be unsanitary? (obviously I would sterilize it before use, but do you think this would suffice and make it safe to use?)

There's a few things you could consider. Will you most definitely be SAH for the duration of BFing? Do you plan to have more children in the next year or so? Do you plan to BF until a year? How active is your life, do you travel alot?

When you think about the long term, investing in the bigger piece of meat *might* be smarter. I invested in the "best" portable pump at the time when my first was born (PISA) and was happy I did because I increased my hours at work with baby #2. I wound up investing in the Freestyle when I had DS because I was back to being a FTWM. LOVED the Freestyle. BTW- it truly is handsfree and extremely portable.

That said, I've heard great things about the Swing for lighter pumping needs.

I don't think I'd buy a used pump on Ebay. Not because of sanitary reasons but more because you don't know how much the pump was used. The motors DO run down on those things. That's why I got a new pump with DS- after pumping at least 2-3x a day for a total of 24 months (used for 2 babies) my PISA just wasn't working as well.

Check your insurance BTW- some carriers WILL fully cover breast pumps. Also- lactation consultants often offer $$$$ pumps for much cheaper.

I have a Pump In Style in a backpack. Love it.

I wouldn't get a used on off ebay, but that's jmo.

I think it depends on how often you plan on pumping. I have the PIS and have been ep-ing and it works pretty well for me. You may want to consider renting a hospital pump at first, though, just to see what your pumping needs will be, and then buy one based on that.

I also got the medela pumping bra - which makes my life so much easier!

I have the Medela PISA metro bag and have no complaints. I usually pump once a day.

Thanks ladies. I am not sure how often I will be pumping...I mean sure I will be SAHM but there will be times I am away from the baby (like a wedding we have a month after my DD for example). Also I am thinking I will want some pumped milk so DH can do a feeding or DH and I can go out to dinner and my mom or MIL can feed DS...but again as a first time mom to be I really don't know yet, kwim?

I think I will get the in style though bc for $100 more it just makes the most sense...TY

I only pumped in the morning so I had a Avent Isis manual pump. I always had trouble with the electric pumps and was able to pump faster with the manual.

i have the medela in style shoulder bag.

it's NOT handsfree... but I cut holes in a sports bra and made it handsfree myself. After 2 months of having to hold those things I was just getting annoyed.... once I did that to my sports bra.. it made ALL the difference.

About 3 years ago i bought the Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump for $150. It didn't come with a bag (so it was the less expensive option), but I didn't want or need one.

I rented a hospital grade madella pump for DD#1, and a hospital grade ameda pump for DD#2. the ameda purely yours was perfect for my needs!

I'm a SAHM and I bought the Pump In Style. I had to do a lot pumping to keep my supply up in the beginning, and to build a nice size freezer stash (I wanted a big stash just in case I couldn't BF for an extended period of time - hospitalization, meds, etc). That being said, I would 100% go with the Freestyle.

I am a SAHM mom as well and used the Freestyle. It took a week for me to receive it from the durable medical supplier and in the meatime, I had borrowed a Pump in Style from a friend. What a world of a difference when I finally got my Freestyle!!! It was great being able to play on the laptop or walk around while pumping and a few times when DH and I were out running around all day, I even pumped in the car If you can, I would 100% go with the Freestyle.
