CIO not working!
Well that or I am not doing it correctly. My son is 1 year old, and can not/will not go to sleep on his own. He needs to be rocked and held and then put gently down in his crib once he is sleeping. Lately, he is waking up EVERY time his little head hits the mattress.
Tried CIO, but child has stamina! Stands up and cries hysterically for over an hour every time. Does not give in.
Help!
Oh and, he will wake up in the middle of the night and the only way to get him back down is to bring him in our bed.....not good.

Re: CIO not working!
are you going in during CIO? What was the longest you let him cry? Some kids need to cry longer. Do you have a video monitor? As long as he's not hurting himself let him cry and eventually he will fall asleep. Look for the signs, he stops to yawn, or starts to walk around the crib, sits down, stands up.
or maybe try the intervals?

Re: CIO not working!
I was going in at intervals. I would try to soothe him without picking him up. He'd stop crying once I was in there but as soon as I left, it started all over again.
The longest I let him cry was a bit over an hour.

DS used to start crying all over again every time we checked in on him (in intervals). So, we stopped. He flat out cried about 3 hours and then fell asleep. Each night after that, he cried less and less. The only way CIO would work for us was to not go in the room period, and I just watched him on the video monitor to make sure he was okay. I know 3 hours sounds extreme, but that's what worked for us - not going in the room at all. It was really difficult to do at first, but then he got the hint that he needed to go to sleep on his own

This is what my sister in Law did. It KILLED her to have my nephew cry like that. But after a week he got the hint and was sleeping on his own.
Basically, she knew she could not give in. Even after an hour he KNEW he would get what HE wanted.
You have to have the will to teach him what YOU want and he wont win. Even if it means 3 hours of screaming.
Good luck.

I know it's what has to be done but the thought of letting him scream and cry for 2+ hours KILLS me....

Re: CIO not working!
For us, going in only made it worse. We watched on the video monitor. She screamed for an hour the first night and then less and less.
Now, when I come upstairs at bedtime - she points to the crib, and then turns over and falls asleep! It really is amazing, good luck!

Re: CIO not working!
If its not working, I do not see how having him scream for 2 hours is going to help.
I would suggest trying something else. The No Cry Sleep Solution book really helped me. I never did CIO with any of my 3 though.
maybe he is overtired and needs an earlier bedtime, a different routine etc.
Good luck in whatever method you do though!
