Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We own a 2bdrm coop. It is a good space though...900 sq ft w/ a finished attic the size of the coop, so storage is not an issue & we have a workout/gym room up there.

IMO there are pros and cons to a house. We pay a lot in maintance...we could easily sell and buy a home in LI but we love our area, also a house is a lot more work. I wish we had another bathroom and another den/LR though...then it would be the perfect space.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We own a 1 bedroom co-op and while it was/is working for the time being. I don't know how much longer we will be able to make-do if we ever have another child.

Unfortunately, selling right now would put us in a bad position as far as having enough money to put on a down payment.

Plus, we want to stay where we are in Queens, and unfortunately owing a decent sized home in this area is far fetched.

Currently the least expensive home in the neighborhood is a row house with 2 small bedrooms listed at close to the half million dollar mark and needs work.

So we either try to save more and take a big hit in selling it right now or we hold on for as long as we can and pray that things start turning around so that we at least get what we paid for it back.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We rent...we have 3 bedrooms and we pay so little it is hard to even WANT a house. But for the stability we will someday.

My issue is with commitment and also the school district. I dont want my kids in LI schools and to grow up on LI, so I want to buy out of state. Right now , not a possibility, so we continue to rent.

IT has its perks and its downfalls.

Just wondering!

Sometimes I get really sad seeing all of the beautiful houses with their awesome holiday decorations, gourmet kitchens, play rooms, etc.

I feel like we're never going to be able to afford a house! Especially now with twins on the way, having to afford daycare, needing a new car that we can all fit in....

We live in a house but we don't have any awesome decorations or gourmet kitchens :Hah:

Also, Hayley, don't you live in CA? CA's housing market is crazy so I think it's comparing apples and oranges, KWIM?

I live in an apartment, but I wouldn't trade "city living" for a house. Ever. I see the struggles my friends have with home ownership and to me it's not worth it. I would eventually like to rent a bigger apartment and I dream of s yard, but no house for us in the forseeable future- by choice!

We live in a 1bdrm apt with our 5 month old DD.

It's cramped but we make do as we try and save for a house.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We rent a house right now. We decided after living in our last apartment that we wanted to try to get a whole house to ourselves. In order to do that and be able to afford it, we moved out east more. We looked at a lot of places by my ILs (who watch DDs), but what we could afford there was nothing compared to what we could afford out in Suffolk.

I don't know if we'll ever be able to own a home. We barely make ends meet now and we just went through bankruptcy. We just don't have the ability to save much money right now.

It's nice that we have the entire house because we can decorate and do with it what we want.

im going to say to the flipside of this, that owning a home these days is not easy. we bought a home in PA b/c we couldnt afford anything in NYC. in 3 years since we've been our here, our costs have gone up considerably..taxes, oil heat, electric bill, water, etc.

we are basically house poor and there are days I wish i could sell and go back to renting.

owning a home is not everything its cracked up to be.

I think that sometimes too... There are days where I wish I lived in a town house that was more affordable.

Me too!! I miss my renting days!! I feel like I had options then. Now, thanks to this crummy market, I am stuck in a house with an upside down mortgage. Chat Icon

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We share a home with my parents, its a high ranch so we live upstairs and they live downstairs. We have thought about moving into our own single family home but than we wouldn't have anyone to share the expenses with and I'd probably have to get a job and stop being a sahm. So for now living here is what works for us.

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

we just sold our 2 bedroom condo in June and are now renting a 3 bedroom townhouse. When we owned our condo we decorated inside and out. It was a really nice place (just to small for us). Now that we are renting, we barely decorate b/c I know its only short term. We are hoping to start looking for a house in March (our lease is up in June-so we want to try and buy a place by then). However, as much as I don't love renting, I am a little scared to buy. All my friends with houses are always complaining how much $$ it is to mainitain and the problems, etc. So we are winging it for now. We figure if we dont see anything in the fall (or feel we need to save more) then we will continue to rent.

This was my mantra, until I had DS. Chat Icon
And actually I don't care for a yard, too many bugs, I prefer a balcony, but DS knows a balcony isn't really outside and stands by the door screaming "outside!" Chat Icon

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We own a 950 sq ft 2 BR condo. It's OK for now, but we are in the process of saving for a house. We bought this place as a stepping stone. It gets the job done, but we def need more space! We also rent a small storage place nearby. DS is only 7 weeks, so it's not an issue now. We have a plan to be out of here in 2 years owning a 4 BR 2.5 bath house somewhere between Huntington and Smithtown on approx 1/2 acre. We are in save save save mode!

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

oh yeah.. i feel ya!

Which is one of the many reasons I moved. I would NEVER EVER under ANY Circumstances be able to afford a home in Long Island. NEVER. not ever.. in a million years. (lotto not withstanding)

In my humble opinion its sick how bad it is in NY/LI. just sick.

I have my home now. Sure i have friends I miss in NY and jim's family is there but I don't care. I have that home that AJ can grow up in.. stability and a investment into her future.

I was getting depressed thinking of never owning a home in Long Island.. Chat Icon

We live in a 2 bedroom apartment.

DH is dreaming of a home and I hope it never happens. I have no desire. If I want to decorate I decorate the apartment!

Main reason why DH wants to move out of NY: so he can have a house and grill in the backyard all day long! Chat Icon

We are in a 1 br. I love our apt., love our landlords, we're in a nice area. My job situation has been rough this past year on top of having a baby, so we are nowhere near close to owning a house. Our space works for now.

We own a 2bdrm coop in Bayside. It's about 900 sq ft and we have a pull down attic for storage. It's perfect for us now and I'm sure will be just fine once our baby gets here but we want out eventually. I'd like to be out before #2 gets here, so maybe 3 years or so?? We'll see!

Same here except for the staying in Queens part. And yeah, I am shocked that the row houses are only 2 bedrooms! They really are no bigger than our apartments except for having a basement, too.

Anyway, we are purging. We will most likely stay here another 4 years unless we win lotto! Chat Icon But we have to stay on top of clutter or else we are screwed.

I will have to post a picture of how our bedroom is. We have 1 bedroom and the way we partitioned it, it allows us to let DS have his own 'nursery' per se.

One thing is that we have to tell family to keep toy gifts to a minimum. We just do NOT have the space. I feel bad but we just can't have all that stuff that other kids have and you know what...maybe that isn't such a bad thing. It will force us to DO things rather than BUY things.

this is something that depresses me daily. but then i hear from my friends who do own a house and all the money they are constantly putting into their house, the constant headaches, and DH & I joke that we don't want to every buy. that makes me feel a little better.

and i live in an apt in a house and i am able to decorate outside and i decorate inside, i make do with what i am able to do.

Same here

Me too, it's a hi-ranch that we own with SIL. She's up, we're down. It really sucks not owning something completely of our own Chat Icon And something BIGGER. The bedroom I grew up in is the size of my 2nd and 3rd bedrooms combined!!! One day we'll own more than 1000 sqft (hopefully).

Good for you! We moved out of our city rental and bought a house in the burbs because we were having DC#2 and needed space... but here we are 2 years later and I would give anything to go back to renting in the city even knowing how tight space would be!

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We rented for a few years before buying our townhome 2 years ago.

Honestly it didn't bother me to rent! My son had a roof over his head, we were able to afford for me to stay at home and then when the time was right we bought our townhome.

I do like owning a home but i think people put way too much emphasis on it. There is no shame in renting while saving money or just b/c you want to! Our landlord fixed anything that was broken, no real property to maintain, no worrying about selling when the time came to move etc..

We were in a great area with lots of other young couples who rented and we all did just fine. Chat Icon

Re: How many people are living in apartments?

We don't rent now but we did for a few years...we were barely able to save. Then we moved in with my parents for a year and saved every penny we could while living in their basement.
Now we do own a home that we bought last year but only because we were blessed that my parents were able to gift us almost half of our down payment.
I love my home but we are close to house poor. My DD is going to be only 4 months old when I go back to work next month. I would LOVE to stay home with her for at least a year but if I did we would foreclose on our home. We need two salaries!
Add all of this to the fact that (as a teacher) I get excessed just about every year and have to pray for my job back and I don't know if we will be staying on LI for many more years to come. It just seems like it shouldn't be this hard. Come on LOTTERY!!
