Re: THE DUGGARS EXPECTING THEIR 20TH!!!
FWIW, do think they are a bit ...extremist. I can't think of a better word. Their whole life and how they live it is very extremist to me, but again, it's not hurting anyone (that we know of) and it's certainly not hurting me and I understand that it's all in the name of religion.
I've spent time reading a lot of their links to pages from their website. Not my thing...very narrow-minded thinking -- no kissing until marriage, S@tan wants you to do bad things - etc....not my thought process. They do and say a lot of things I don't agree with. But, who am I? I am surely no better.
I don't doubt her love for her children, and who am I to judge her parenting?
As far as the molestation rumors, I would think if it were true, it would be hidden or "prayed away," forgiveness, etc.
Also, statistics would show that at least 1 or 2 of their children is gay (Isn't it 1 out of 10 people are gay?) and here they are being taught it's a sin, etc. But again, people have different belief systems...and I respect that.
I think of the Amish and how their raise their families and that's not the norm, but I do find it intriguing.
Only time will tell. The thing is, when you have a large number of people in one group, there is no denying statistics, even if things are repressed.
It will be interesting to see how things play out. I bet good money that one day one of their kids will have a tell-all book.

They believe in the bible literally and follow the teachings of Gothardism. Spare the rod, spoil the child is a big thing with those people.
And just because there are worse methods of "training" your children than blanket training doesn't make it right.

Re: THE DUGGARS EXPECTING THEIR 20TH!!!
Blanket training is an approach used to train toddlers and pre-schoolers to attain self-discipline. With consistent training, the child will acquire an ability to play contentedly and quietly by him/herself for an extended period of time. A parent designates a certain amount of time (usually 15-45 minutes, depending on the age of the child) that a child must sit by him/herself on a blanket on the floor. The child is not permitted to leave the parameters of the blanket, and may play quietly with a toy while seated on the blanket. After daily training in this manner, eventually the child will sit and play quietly on the blanket whenever and wherever the child is asked to do so. A blanket is used in this method of training because of its easy portability and accessibility in almost any time or location, such as during meal preparations, meetings, ceremonies, and medical appointments. Known practitioners of the practice include the Duggars [1] Opponents of blanket training call it emotionally abusive.

Oh that doesn't sound so terrible. I mean don't we cage them in with gates? Also, playpens and pack and plays are used to keep kids 'contained' and playing with their toy. We do CIO... there are other methods widely used that could also be considered 'emotionally abusive' as well. I mean, I probably won't do this.... but it's not awful. I don't see it as abuse. They are being taught the ability of independent play.
At what age do they stop? Surely they aren't putting a 16 yr old on the blanket, right? That aspect might change my opinion.

I think this post has taken a very poor turn We do not live with them and we do not know their day to day life and some of us are assuming things that may or may not be true. I get that they are on tv, but honestly some of these comments are just disgusting. Speculating they are brainwashed, possible incest, kids doing all the rearing. It's one thing to have an opinion it's another to spread gossip of this caliber. We're no longer talking about a womens uterus but if this is a safe home.
Have you watched the show? The television interviews??? They are very vocal and proud at the massive responsibility that the older children have in taking care of the younger siblings---- that is not gossip or internet searches! they also are open about thier methods and religious beliefs enough so to the extent that it is a bit shocking. Before you jump on the posters here you should have known that the Duggars themselves are very vocal about this!!!! as for incest accusations I have never heard of this and that is gossip. People from thier area also have a lot of gossip that is very upsetting if true. I feel bad for those children if it is
I'm not trying to jump on anybody I just think the thread has turned in a sour direction on certain things. I also think that there is nothing wrong with the older ones raising the younger ones. That WAS the norm back in the day. Just because it doesn't happen anymore doesn't mean it's wrong either. My grandparents tell stories all the time about growing up in their large families. That wasn't child abuse or unfair expectations. That was life. They beat to a different drummer, and do things different. It may not be what I choose for my kids, but I don't think it's fair to say it's bordering on abusive or to feel bad for them. It's their life and their parenting way. We all make decisions that anybody could disagree with. We see it all the time....CIO or not, Attachment parenting is it bad, sahm or wftm. We all make decsions and I don't think any of us would want to be picked apart for the choices we make. I understand it comes with being on tv and that's fine, but you have to agree that some comments on here and everywhere else are boardering on just mean. That's my peace.

Re: THE DUGGARS EXPECTING THEIR 20TH!!!
I agree - there's definitely something wrong in this day & age with a set of parents having so many children & expecting their older ones to take care of them.....regardless of what anyone on this board says, I think all the kids are brainwashed - they aren't given the opportunity to become individuals & follow their own dreams because it is necessary for them to stay at home & raise their siblings until their mother hits menopause & can no longer reproduce. They should focus on the HUGE family they already have, instead of selfishly bringing more children into this world & not thinking about how it will effect the children they already have. Just my opinion!

I was going to respond differently.. but I have just now decided I just don't have enough give a f*ck to learn anything more about the Duggars or their child rearing skills (or lack thereof).
I am sorry her having another child seems to upset so many people so much but whatever.

Well a time out is supposed to be the amount of minutes the age they are. This blanket training is 15-45 minutes.

What makes you feel this is abuse? How does it differ than leaving a kid in a playpen?

I never said this at all. I don't agree with the controlling factor that they have over their kids and how none of them have a mind of their own.

Re: THE DUGGARS EXPECTING THEIR 20TH!!!
I really could care less about this thread however, I was curious when I saw talk of this BLANKET method so I googled it.
And all I have to say is - I defy ANYONE- Duggar or not- to get my DD to stay on a blanket on the floor. They have obviously not met the likes of my child! They would be sorely sorely disappointed and frustrated. I am very confused about how this method would work. My DD would get up, walk away, grab the blanket and fling it across a room.
What a bizzare thing.

Re: THE DUGGARS EXPECTING THEIR 20TH!!!
Usually in blanket training, a child is "encouraged" to stay on the blanket by the parent slapping a yardstick or rod down on the floor next to the blanket if the child gets too close to the edge of the blanket.
Here's an example, although this lady uses a switch:
Blanket Training
And NO, I'm not saying that the Duggars necessarily switch their kids. However, they have advocated blanket training using the fear of the loud sound or of the rod as a deterrent for leaving the blanket.

I still say my daughter would give them a run for their money. She'd grab that stick and turn it on them! I swear to you...she's no Duggar. She could have never spawned from Michele's soft spoken womb! I think my DD might make Michelle to finally decide to close up shop!

When you have others taking care of your home and children, I can see why you don't have any wrinkles.
