I watched the show tonight and when she was asked about overpopulation, she said that it was a myth and then Jim Bob said that there can't be overpopulation when so much of Arkansas has barren land.
we could always move em to antartica when they fill up arkansas. there's some space there.

I just see it as 2fold. YES in some aspects the world would be much worse off with sooo many kids.. BUT if we could say trade some garbage people for these people, I actually see the world as a much better place in terms of some of the morals they uphold. I do agree they tend to go off the deep end with some of their teachings... in terms of the sheltering, etc. But I do admit I like their wholesome outlook and the good decent people they really do seem to be.
I don't have much on the tax aspect because I've never heard it before... I'd have to do more research on that before formulating a full opinion on it.
I think the point is that if everyone had families this size, we would not be talking about "some garbage." We'd be talking about a population that's about 11 times larger than the current population. It's simply not sustainable, and to me, it is selfish and irresponsible that they are taking a path that, if everyone took it, would destroy the planet.
I agree with your point.. but in a sense you are twisting what I am saying. You are quoting me on the "some garbage"... and I'm talking about replacing garbage people with them.
I agree that everyone cannot be doing this. It would be awful for our planet. I agree with that.
I just wouldn't mind swapping certain members of society. haha. I shouldn't say anymore on this topic.
Right, if everyone did this, it would be horrible for our planet. Hence, why its selfish and socially not responsible.
And swapping members of society with them...
That's why i said I shouldn't say anymore on this topic... it's not going to come out right. And I don't mean it in an awful way...
Because I can't shut up... and I do want you to see I'm really not coming from an awful place:
I honestly do agree with the fact that all families cannot go out and do this. And I strongly feel their children shouldn't follow in their footsteps. It's just too much of a burden on our resources. I do believe that. I'm not at all arguing that point.
I just happen to find some gray area in it all... mostly because I don't find these kids to be "bad people" and I'd much rather them around than some of the crap people I hear about on a daily basis on the news, stories people tell, etc. I also do like *some* of the teachings and morals... which in turn ties right into my outlook on the kids. there are just some aspects I see in them that i wouldn't mind others in the world obtaining as well.
It's socially irresponsible in terms of resources... but IDK that I find it socially irresponsible in terms of their morals portrayed (I can't speak of what I don't see). That's where the swapping comes into play. It would be nice if everyone could really live as hunky dory as they do and we didn't have these child predators, molesters, rapists, murders, thieves, morally corrupt people in the world. That's more where I'm coming from.

Yeah of course, I don't think anyone is pro- molesters, rapists, murderers etc. It would be nice to live in that world...it just doesn't exist though. I think they're doing a disservice to their kids raising them so sheltered from the real world...the implicit message is "live on this land with us and you'll be safe"...to me that cult-like.

Do you think anyone even gets excited anymore when they announce she's pregnant? Or is it just like "ok that's nice, what's for dinner?"
I just hope nothing happens to her or new baby - very risky

does the older son live on their land? i know he had his own home... but I thought it was a drive away from them.... not necessarily on their land. maybe I'm taking it literally.
I think their kids are very sheltered. VERY! But it has, at the same time, kept a wholesomeness to them that is engaging.
Those kids wouldn't ever survive in NYC or in most places. I do admit.. I want to see what these kids become in their adult lives. i don't know much about Arkansas... having never even visited... but I know raising a kid like that in NYC would be a disaster for them. I *think* being they are in Arkansas is what gives them the ability to live like this.

It's odd... but they do! all the kids gather for their announcement! IDK how they don't just know what's coming?!?!!
They showed it on a few of the episodes. The kids get all involved in naming the new baby too.

I think the older son does rent the land from his father, but it's not the same land as the family home is on.I'm not 100% sure about this, though.

This isn't about her 'not caring' about her carbon footprint or overpopulation. Her faith - her RELIGION - has taught her that GOD knows better than she does, than you do, than anyone does. She feels that God will not allow her to get pregnant when he feels that she's done. Until then, she just keeps on keeping on. She is probably petrified on some level. She is probably worried about her health and her children's health and her unborn child's health.. but she has faith that God has not misled her and that everything will be okay.
I think it's admirable that she has that much faith. I hope she and the baby are safe.
I don't know. I'm just confused by this point of view. What if God told them to kill someone? Would that make it okay? Where is the line? If one truly believes that they are being socially irresponsible by having this many children (and I certainly do believe that), then I don't see how the fact that they believe in God makes it okay.
ITA
And I still think they're doing damage to their children not only by having this many, but putting themselves on TV.
I'm sure God led them to do this as well
Tons of cults do disgusting things in the name of religion
And just because the kids are getting fed, clothed and housed doesn't mean they're getting raised in a loving home with individual parenting and guidance from their parents...
and God forbid one of the parents get sick or something else...I don't see how that is socially responsible
And I don't get how the parents are SO PROUD they shelter their kids from other influences and information, only allowing them to hang out with other similar families, etc (breeding intolerance) YET put the family on TV--seems hypocritical
They might be a happy family, but I guess we all would be if our parents kept us completely disconnected from the outside world (minus the chaperoned field trips)
And then they grow up to be voting Duggars who have never thought for themselves but only what their mom & dad have drilled into their head...
Because THEY put themselves on TV, I don't have a problem speaking my mind about them
"All your children are poor unfortunate victims of the lies that you believe." -Frank Zappa
Hrmm.
Yes - people do TERRIBLE things in the name of religion. I don't think you can equate that with having children. It isn't as though her religion has her drowning her children in a river or bombing religious sites. She's just a really fertile chick.
As to her parenting... I may not agree with it but I don't see her children turning out as terrible individuals with a desire to harm society in any way. If they are effed in the head.. it isn't showing. They SEEM happy, well adjusted and hard working. That's more then I can say for a lot of the people I know who grew up in 'normal sized' families. They don't seem to abuse drugs or alcohol, they aren't on welfare, they aren't in jail, they haven't killed anyone.
I think people get irked because they aren't typical. They are 'weird' and that makes folks uncomfortable. Perhaps they only hang out with folks 'like' them because they know that other folks know they are strange and they don't want their kids to be picked on and hurt by the cruelty of outsiders? Is that really the worst thing in the world to want to protect your children?
And children grow up. And they have the opportunity to leave. And even before they leave all children question the superhuman influence of their own parents. There are many religions which shelter and isolate their families - many stay with the families and some leave. They don't chain them to a basement wall.
They have put themselves out there on television and I think that means they have opened themselves up to critique and judgement and whatever else. But the fact is - when we have a world filled with 'celebrities' who steal, abuse drugs, go to jail, drive drunk, live selfish lives, cheat on their spouses and abandon their (appropriate number of children) to the care of nannies and other caregivers - this family seems to be better than most.
I get the and even the and --- but I've seen some serious vitriol aimed at these folks and I just don't get that. I don't see how it effects anyone enough to make them that fired up!

I would never have 20 kids but whatever, you want a big family, fine.. but when YOUR kids starting having THEIR OWN kids, it is time to stop.
It is gross to me that their grandkids have aunts/uncles younger than them!

But they aren't being FORCED to stay. They WANT to stay. They aren't being told they can NOT go to college.
I don't know. I do think they are a little odd.. but I can't see myself spewing all sorts of hatred on them when they aren't really hurting anyone. I wish her well and I hope she has a safe pregnancy and healthy infant.

Are there even any "J" names left?
I really don't care what they do. I mean, so long as I'm not paying for them or babysitting them, knock yourselves out. I did think after the fiasco with the last one she might stop at that point but....
I'm more amazed at the fact that her uterus has not fallen out yet. That thing should be put in the Guiness Book of World Records or at least bronzed or something.

I don't ever remember seeing that in their shows though and I think I have seen almost every show. They say things like they can go to college if they want, they can go in the military but I have a feeling off the camera's there is a lot the TV viewing audience does not see.

Oh ok. I never heard that.
I think the girls need to do more than just cook and clean and take care of the kids. While it is great that they know how to do things around the home, they always need to learn things outside of the house and how to take care of themselves, financially. I know one of them is with the fire dept and Jim Bob was teaching the girls "boy" jobs on one episode. I don't think the boys do much of the cooking, cleaning, laundry, child care though. I do know Jim Bob's mother comes in to do the laundry. I think that is great but I think if you need to get your mother to come and help out in your house, your plate is FULL-bawahhhaa.

There really is a great wholesome goodness that the kids each seem to encompass.... and that's what I really like about them.
Doesn't everyone hang out with people more like them? Like attracts like.
I very much agree with all you have written.

I'd like to see them with a gay kid.
Having the mother help with laundry isn't much to me. I think it's nice when people can help one another. We get help from our parents and we only have 1 baby.

No, but do you do 10 loads of laundry per day every single day?-lol!!
I think help is great but if you NEED it because you can't do it alone and are making that choice, that is not fair to everyone else.

The older ones don't seem to have the desire to leave though. There doesn't seem to be a push for any of them to go to college either. To further their education.
ITA. they are happy!!! what's the problem with them not being forced to go to college!! college does not necessarily make a person well adjusted.

I think they could make arrangements to do it if they had to.
Where did you get the 10 loads of laundry per day? That seems rather high, even for them!
Having their grandmother do their laundry isn't means to rip them apart IMO. I just don't think it's so awful.
Lots of people can't get their own household work done.... they hire people instead. So if 2 full time working parents couldn't get around to cleaning their home and so they hired someone to do it... I don't see that as a terrible thing. In this case the grandmother must want to do it. I'm sure she likes it.... otherwise she wouldn't do it. It's not like she's being forced to do their laundry....
