WWYD...Older Child and Sonogram related...(Update at Bottom!)

I'm debating this...and thought I had my answer, but I asked on the parenting board and now it is making me change my mind.

I have my Level 2 today...It will be my first sono since 8 weeks since we didn't do the ultrascreen.

Part of me wants Emily to be there. She is 6 years old. I feel like she would be so in awe of seeing the baby on the sonogram, getting to see it move around and it's such a clear image at 20 weeks.

But part of me feels like I should wait and not bring her. I haven't had a sono in so long, what if something is wrong? What if we get bad news? I wouldn't want her to be there for that!

I also know that i probably won't have another sono until towards the end when they do growth sonograms (which I am pretty sure I'll have weekly since Emily was nearly a 10lb baby and they'll want to monitor baby's size again) but those sonos aren't the same. The baby is so crowded by then, it isn't as clear.

What would you do?

Would you bring her today? Or wait for another opportunity later on in the pregnancy?

Id probably bring her, TBH if I got bad news I wouldnt let DC know the details, but would find their presence comforting....

Last December I got bad news which was totally unexpected. We did miscarry and thankfully Gillian wasnt there. JIn January we were pregnant again. We didnt take her until the second or third sono.

This is my 2nd sono. I had one at 8 weeks to confirm the pregnancy and for dating purposes, and now I am 21 weeks. I am feeling the baby move around every day and have been since about 17 weeks. I know the baby is alive and kicking....just...I have a lot of what ifs in my head! I also think it's a once in a lifetime opportunity! THis is it, no more kids for us!

I didn't take my older two (4 & 6) to any of the sonos. TBH it was really just too much to coordinate and they get bored easily.

Robbie was much younger then Emily.. but he did go to my sonogram. The tech actually didn't let him or Rob in until after she'd had a chance to take a peek herself. Then she brought both of them in, showed them the heart and asked if we wanted to know if it was a boy or girl. Robbie wanted to know but was overruled by us!

I think it's a good experience for her and can help her feel more connected to the pregnancy and make the baby feel more 'real' to her... but I would ask the tech if she could check you out first and not let Emily know what is going on until she's sure things look good.

Because you are pretty far along in your pregnancy and the fact that Emily knows you are pregnant then I would bring her. Its a very exciting time for you and for her and I think it will help her bond with this new baby to me.

Many congrats to you and hope you are feeling well.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just called them to ask that! They said that their machines don't have those capabilities at this time! Oh man!

So I really want to bring her.

DH is pretty dead set against it. Chat Icon

SO I am pretty sure we are not bringing her, and I am a bit disappointed, but I guess he has a say in it too. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Is he OK with bringing her to a later sono?

Honestly, it never entered my mind to bring the girls--they were in school during the appts anyway... IDK, I also had a miscarriage and discovered the bad news during a sono (the first one actually) so I guess I'm overly cautious as a result. I will never forget the look on my DH's face and then I burst into tears the moment we left the place. I wouldn't have wanted my DC there to actually "witness" bad news.

I do like the idea of bringing her to the growth sono--or maybe she could go and hear the heartbeat one day?

ETA: Also, she's not going to realize the difference in clarity between sonos anyway...

I wouldn't unless I had a childcare issue. I taped it & showed it to my ds later but he wasn't interested.

Re: WWYD...Older Child and Sonogram related...

Hi All! I wanted to update on what we ended up doing.

Our appointment was at 1 in the afternoon and since it would have been a last minute decision we decided NOT to bring DD to the appointment.

So we went to the sono on our own, and they did all the measurements and checked everything out and the baby is doing GREAT and is measuring exactly where he or she should be right now.

We spoke with the sono tech and the doc and they said it would be fine to bring DD and that so many people did it. And it turns out that because of the baby's position they couldn't check the heart chambers so we have to go back in 2 weeks anyway! So we will be bringing her then!

Overall it was a great appointment! While the doc was using the doppler the baby kicked so hard that the doc saw my belly move! He was like "Woah that was a good kick, I saw that!" so that was pretty funny.

And it was great for DH to see and hear the baby ... helps it to sink in a bit for him and he's all talking about needing to start the baby's room so it was a good thing Chat Icon
