I'm convinced the government is trying to make it as difficult as they can for women.
Let me get this straight....they don't want health insurance to cover the cost of birth control so that responsible women can avoid unplanned pregnancies (yet from what I understand men can have viagra covered to help them get women pregnant in the first place). Then when a woman has an unplanned pregnancy and has to make one of the hardest decisions of her life, they are going to FORCE you to look at it. So let's say it does change some women's minds and they keep the babies....now we have unwanted children out there who may be abused or resented or not raised in a loving home, possibly being supported by the government because the mom can't afford them.
Yeah, that makes sense.
I think the decision to have an abortion- in most cases- is not one that has been taken lightly. I'm sure many of these women are already feeling guilt and shame over the decision- to force them to look at an ultrasound is horrible.
I'm sorry to those who disagree- but I will always support the rights and feelings of a living breathing human being over those of a fetus.
The only way I would support this is if maybe it were done for "repeat offenders"- or those who are obviously using abortion as a means of birth control.
I believe everyone makes mistakes- everyone deserves a 2nd chance. It's those women getting multiple abortions time and time again who are making the decision without any thought to consequences.

There are plenty of men who impose their own wishes on women. Another point. As painful as it is to have an abortion, it's a different pain to carry a baby to term and give it up. So now we're talking about a whole slew of other issues. That women who have been forced to look at the sono, changes her mind out of guilt, has the baby, can't care of the child, gives the baby up and now lives with that emotional trauma.
I think our gov't should concentrate on things outside of my uterus.

I'm mainly pro-life, except for very rare cases like incest or if the mother's health is in danger(which happens very rarely).
What made me pro-life is the amount of people I have come across in my lifetime that use abortions as their means of birth control!! I know 3 women, who have all had abortions 3 or 4 times. I can't even fathom this. After the FIRST time you think they would care enough to use a condom or take birth control! I mean, I don't understand their ridiculous mentality. They obv just don't give a shit!
People like this NEED to be held accountable in some way bc using abortion as birth control is such a disgusting thing to do, I get nauseous just thinking about.
On a personal note, my birth mother was date raped when she was 17 and became pregnant with me. She gave me up for adoption to an AMAZING family, and me and her still have a wonderful relationship. We see each other and talk all the time. She went to therapy for many years bc of what happened to her, but she always tells me that she would never change her decision for anything. I'm so thankful bc if not I wouldn't be here.
Maybe I'm slightly biased bc of my situation, but I still think using abortion as a means of birth control is just wrong on so many levels. Unfortunately, it happens more than we think

It's really unenforceable--most doctors, those with any compassion would probably do the ultrasound if this passes, but not make sure the mother looks. So in theory, you probably could just close your eyes.

I'm pro-choice. Honestly I think they need to some sort of ultra sound to verify that you are pregnant and the gestation anyways.
I dont see how they could force anyone to look at it regardless.

I don't necessarily think that a woman should be forced to look at images in front of her, but i "get it"...
Its a very true statement to say that someone is easier to do when its more "out of sight out of mind". You can trick your mind into disconnecting a bit from something you are doing...
If you know you are pregnant, you know a baby is growing in your uterus. But especially in early pregnancy its easy to think its just a bunch of cells, slowly growing and not much of anything. When a woman is pregnant for the very first time (who WANTS to be pregnant) there is no greater joy and amazement than seeing a tiny being moving around and seeing the flicker of a heartbeat. It makes it very, very "real".
Women need to know what they are doing before they do it. It's easy to say MOST women know exactly what that baby looks like or what it REALLY is, but i don't think all women "get it". That it is indeed a LIFE, and a life they are ending. Even if you are very pro choice or feel that it's just a clump of cells, that clump of cells is forming into a baby with a heart, a brain, a nervous system etc...
And again..i don't think a woman needs to be tortured for her decision, but its important more than anything that women know what exactly what they are doing. Just not sure if the ultrasound is the way to go...

And who will pay for and take care of these unwanted children? How will this help? There are already too many kids not being taken are of. It just doesn't make sense. I'm pro life for myself and pro choice for everyone else.

What i dont understand is this.... Why do you think these women should have to carry a pregnancy they dont want? Again, personally i would never use abortion as birth control..hell i am a mother two that had to overcome infertility issues to do such.. I just dont see the point in accepting the government to dictate such mandates!! Again, we won this right of choice in the 70's.. Along with all the questions with who is paying for this?? I am pretty sure that there is NO insurance company that will pay for an elective termination of pregnancy. I think this is a topic that has to be thought as a never winning argument. there is no wrong or right in this..

We have it here in Texas
You can't even tune out the noise either. You are required by law to see and hear your unborn fetus before an abortion.
Down right outrageous if you ask me. Cruel and unusual treatment of the woman. I find it shameful and disgusting. A nearly rape of our right to choose.

From what horror stories *I* have heard (but not confirmed as it was passed on) they will keep that rod up your vagoo until you look over. They stay there until you do. And you can not get your abortion. So if you look away or put an ipod on, you can't get an abortion.

Private insurance companies and Medicaid cover abortions.

I agree. I am OUTRAGED over this. I don't understand how anyone can defend the practice. If YOU want to have an ultrasound and look, then do it, but don't tell me I have to. This War on Women has GOT to end!!! An abortion is a huge deal and takes a lot of heartache and gut wrenching thought to go through with. No one should have the right to force this on anyone.
This makes me beyond angry. I am fuming as I type this. And I agree, who is making the fathers look??? They created it as well!

i guess it all boils down to whether you are pro choice or pro life, and your feelings about what those terms mean. you feel outraged that women would be forced to look at the ultrasound, and i get outraged that many women use abortion as birth control. as far as bringing the fathers into the conversation, it sounds like many women who are pro choice don't want the father involved in the decision when they decide to abort, so what are you accomplishing by making the fathers look? would it make a difference if the father said that he wanted to keep the child and care for it after seeing the ultrasound? you can't say that women should have the right to choose and men shouldn't tell them what to do, but then in the same breath say that the fathers should be forced to look as well.

i didn't mean to imply that you said it, but if you have been following the other spin off post about fathers, you will see what i mean. and ultimately it's not the father in most cases making the decision to have the abortion, its the mother. not saying i disagree with you that the father should be held accountable, but i just don't know what that would accomplish. and like i said, most women don't want the men involved in that part of the decision.

I think we are projecting feelings that many women simply do not feel. I personally know of many people in my own family who got abortions for no other reason than it was just inconvenient to have a baby. I would say that most of the women in my family have unfortunately had abortions and they have all been pregnancies while they were married and not using birth control and they simply did not want a baby at that time.
When my mother was pregnant with me she went to have an abortion - because my dad who had 2 children from a previous marriage did not want any more children. The doctor who was to perform the abortion took it upon himself to describe the stage of development of the fetus (me) and all that the fetus was doing at that time. Obviously, after that they decided not to proceed. I am grateful, as were ultimately my mom and dad, that the doctor did that. My parents were not poor or unloving or anything like that and were able to and ultimately did provide me with a great life.
I thi k if you are going to have sex and then have an abortion you should not be kept in the dark about exactly what it is that is going on in your body because it might upset you. It is an upsetting situation. A woman SHOUlD know what is happening in her body when she makes that decision. It is important to have all the facts and I believe an ultrasound is part of the facts?
