D&C Cost: In-office vs. Hospital

I just got a bill from my OB for the D&C procedure this past Feb. and it was $600 for an in-office D&C!

I was charged $225 just for the instrument used. :P

My insurance isn't paying it but applied some to the deductible. It was also listed as an 'abortion' (it was a missed miscarraige) in the claim notice. Is this something I can fight? :P

Just curious, what do others here pay for an in-hospital vs. an in-office d&c?

I have heard others paying $5k-15k for a hospital d&c and am just glad my bill isn't that insane, but it's still frustrating having to deal with this and being reminded of the miscarriage. :P

I had both of mine in the hospital -- and I think the insurance paid over 2k for each of them (by the time I had them I had already reached my deductible).

They had mine labeld as a spontaneous abortion.... I don't know if you can fight what they call it --- I think its the same procedure.

I would call the office and make sure that it is coded properly - it could make the difference between having to pay or not. Even though it technically is the same procedure, how they code it to the insurance company my matter.

the word abortion is correct I was piss when I saw it but ins company explained thats what a D&C aka Missed Miscarriage. is. I have deductibles so everyone ins amt will be different. I got 3 dif bills. Dr, Hospital, Anestiologist (sp?). It ridiculious what Hspt charges you..$75 for ONE pain killer! anyway out of pocket I paid about $400 for hospital, $400 for Dr (this includes initial visit) and $300 for Anestiologist. Sucks pay all this money for a miscarriage!!!

With my insurance I have a $1,000 deductible so that is what I had to pay. Although I got billed a couple of seperate bills. Everyone needs to get there cut. It is so fustrating and annoying. I was pissed when the bills came and told DH I didn't want this so why do I have to pay all this money.

I had mine in the hospital and THANK GOD for insurance! Everything totaled over $15K!!!!!

I ended up paying around $3K, which was my deductible, after all was said and done. Luckily, DH's company provides an HSA account with the exact deductible amount on it, so we technically didn't pay anything out of pocket since we put all of the charges on the HSA account.

I had mine in office and when all was said and done I think I paid around 900.

I think my d&e and d&c (both done in the hospital) were $200 each after insurance.

I had mine done at the hospital and I ended up paying about $800 in total after insurance. Some of the bills didn't come in until almost 5 or 6 months afterwards and it was a constant cruddy reminder...

Unfortunately, a D&C is equivalent to an abortion so I don't think there's anything you can fight there in terms of how it's coded.

Thanks ladies, I reviewed the bill again and it looks like one of the ultrasounds I had (had 3 total) was not covered.

That's over $200. :P

Shouldn't all the ultrasounds be covered if it's medically necessary to determine if the fetus is viable or growing?

Well I'm glad I called my ins. provider 'cus the $200 ultrasound should be covered but the billing dept. billed it through a doctor at the office who wasn't in the network! :P

Goes to show you really have to be diligent when reviewing bills so you don't pay for things unnecessarily.
