Torticollis & Plagiocephaly EI question
My LO is being evaluated for Early Intervention. If he gets it, it will be for physical therapy for his neck muscles, he has torticollis and is getting plagiocephaly as a result of it. This is my first child & first time contacting EI. The woman said that they come to the house to do paperwork and then let me choose a provider to do an evaluation. I was wondering if one provider is better than the others? Like, is one more likely to approve him for EI than the other? I haven't met with EI yet, so I don't know the names of the providers, but I'd imagine one may be recommended over the others. Any advice?

Re: Torticollis & Plagiocephaly EI question
I went through this and EI is amazing! They really hold your hand every step of the way. After the evaluation, if your LO gets it, they come to the house and they go over everything with you. They recommend people in your area. I had asked my ped b/4 the evaluation who they recommend and when EI came she also recommended the same place.
If you have any questions, please feel free to FM me, DS has Plagiocephaly as well and has been wearing a helment since May 7. He is doing amazing and I could not be happier with both the helmet and the physical theraphy.

Re: Torticollis & Plagiocephaly EI question
We did DS' PT right at Good Sam Hospital.
You could call your ped and see who they have good experience with.

Re: Torticollis & Plagiocephaly EI question
I just heard of torticollis today bc two different docs mentioned it today ( at gi consult and at ped for a cold) no one mentioned it before. We knew ds tilted to right but thought no big deal and he just prefers it. Today they mentioned gentle stretches and playing with his toys on other side and if that doesn't work to do pt. I don't think its congentital bc no one mentioned it before today which is 8w old. Anything I should know? Sorry to jump in. Tia!

Re: Torticollis & Plagiocephaly EI question
My twin sons both had plagio and tort and were evaluate by EI. They did not qualify for EI because they were advanced in other areas so we went through insurance for private PT.
They also just graduated from wearing helmets for plagio and we saw a really good improvement. We did the helmets through Bay Ortho.
If you need a private PT, we are seeing Dr. Linda Finneran and she is wonderful. I cannot say enough good things about her. Just fabulous.

I work in EI so I will answer your questions. The County that you contacted will come to your home and do some paperwork. They will hand you a list of Agency's that you can choose from to conduct your evaluation. All Agency's are required to use the same testing tools. The PT will either use the Alberta Infant Motor Scales or the Peabody along with a checklist. You will most likely also received a SPED or PSY evaluation as a Core. In some cases they will just give you a PT supplemental. This is standard and doesn't mean they assume any further issues. If your child does qualify, you will pick an Agency (either the one that performed your evaluations or a different one) who will come to your home to conduct therapy. usually you will get approved for 1 or 2 x 45 minutes per week.
I will FM you some Agency's that I know well enough to recommend. The Agency has NOTHING to do with if your Child qualifies though, it will depend on his/her gross motor quotient and z score..
If your Child does not qualify, you can go to a PT privately, which will cost copays etc. If you do qualify there is no charge to you directly.

Re: Torticollis & Plagiocephaly EI question
We are getting EI now for both twins. They both have torticollis & one has placiocephaly with the helmet. We felt the best place for that is Cranialtech.com which is in NJ because the band/helmet is the open concept & only weighs 6 oz. Yes, I did/do have to drive there weekly or now every other but felt it was best option.
My other twin is low tone so he is getting PT to work on that. I live in East meadow if you have any questions
