Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

They are doing a better job because Cuomo has a commission watching this time around after there performance after Irene! I applauded the LIPA crew as when they came down my neighborhood. I didn't personally lose power but most of my neighbors did. I know how hard the men have been working and they deserve praise, even if I hate their company!

Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

As I drove home tonight, I saw a whole slew of out of state utility trucks headed east on the LIE.

I agree. I see so many on fb who have power restored. I don't expect it any time soon. We also have a huge tree being held up by a wire across the street... Just hoping these dangerous situations are given priority

Yeah a lot of people I know had power restored today. Some still don't. I think they are doing what they can.

Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

I have a problem with LIPA. They get paid an enormous amount of money. They have publicly said the storm exceeded their expectations, which as a PP said is totally ridiculous. The National Weather Service was so on with this storm, and gave a week's notice, it should not have exceeded their expectations. A 15 foot storm surge, is just that - a 15 foot storm surge. Now, that said, yesterday I drove 80 miles through the Townships of Brookhaven, Smithtown, and Huntington and did not see one single crew anywhere. Today I drove 40 miles through the Townships of Brookhaven, Smithtown and Islip and again did not see one single crew. Neither day did I even see a truck on the road driving to a site. On B-103 this morning a woman called and said she saw 10 LIPA trucks in the parking lot of a Dunkin Donuts (or 7-11 I don't remember which) for more than 1/2 hour. I'm thrilled 100,000 people have their power restored - but for the 800,000+ still without power, they don't know about the devastation in Breezy Point, or Atlantic City, so they only thing they can do is complain about their personal situation.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

I am sure this was a difficult storm. But today I sat by my house charging my phone and I counted 16 lipa trucks on newbridge road. I never saw one move and most had workers sitting in their trucks. Were they taking a break? Possible but it's just a lot of trucks to see doing nothing for over an hour.

I can't help but agree. The only reason I can post this now is because we came to my parents, who do have power, in Queens. I am really NOT complaining because I know how lucky we are that no power is the worst of our problems, but I can't help but be frustrated when I have no idea of any estimates, even. Until today, I hardly knew the extent of the damage because there was no way for me to find out. Even if they said it's going to be 4-8 days, at least I wouldn't feel like I am figuratively (and yeah, literally) stumbling around in the dark.

It is easy it complain about people venting when you have power. Still 800,000 plus without power.

although I have nothing against LIPA, I really have to agree. Since my power went out I have not seen one single truck in my area. Tonight I saw a group of them just sitting in a parking lot of a restaurant and hotel.

Usually I can deal with no power. I don't care about the tv, Internet and cable. BUT What I do care about is that I have an 18 month old with no heat and no hot water!!!!!! It's getting cold. My house is currently at 58!!!! That's ridiculous especially with a baby. And I hear tomorrow nights lows are in the upper 30's.

So for many people I don't think it's about television, it's about basic necessity such as heat!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

As much as I want to praise the workers for their efforts, I've been out of power since Monday at 2 pm.... When our transformer blew.... I have yet to see a truck in our neighborhood! It's about 50 degrees in my house... My toddler son is in 2 layers, blankets which I didn't want to give him for fear that he's not old enough yet... My daughter has been sleeping in our bed because she's scared and its cold... And my poor neighbor who has newborn girls at home can't keep them warm enough! I understand it takes a long time and its not going to be easy but communication needs to improve! I can't be told to check a website as this is the first time I can get online... I called in to check and their is not a timeline... I'm just so frustrated and tired of it all.... And I saw the destruction today and I understand that no power is nothing compared to what others face but that's only because I found out my cousins had power!

I agree. I know we are so lucky to have minimal damage and I couldn't care less about tv or internet or whatever. What I DO care about is that my 7 month old is freezing!!! So no... I will not complain about not having lights and I know they are working as hard as they can but I am and will continue to be upset about the lack of heat. Unfortunately we have no where to go because it is even colder at our in laws so I am extremely stressed and anxious over this. I am wearing two pair of socks and my feet are still freezing so I have to worry if the layers on DS are enough.. Chat Icon

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

Yeah sorry but I disagree too. My entire town is without power including every single traffic light down and there are downed wires everywhere! There are wires hanging from my house and all around my house and tangled in the two huge trees done in my yard. There are wires on the street everywhere and even hanging from the lines on main busy roads and guess what I have not seen one lipa truck or worker since the storm not one. No one can get through to anyone and there is zero communication whatsoever. And personally I think having no power is a a serious situation. My 2 yr old went to bed with two pairs of pants and four shirts and is under a mound of blankets. It is obvious to me that we cannot live like this going forward because it is just not safe or healthy for the kids.

The complaining on facebook is getting on my nerves. There are shelters if people are worried about the cold. I do not have power, but I had the foresight to make a hotel reservation before the storm. If our power is not back on when our stay runs out, we will just go home, light our lanterns, and pile on the blankets. It sucks, but be thankful you have a home, and your life. Many weren't so lucky.

Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

I feel like the communication from LIPA is still an issue. Now I am in CT so I am getting to watch what unfolds here in CT and on LI. In CT, 90% of Fairfield County was also out but they're now down to 34%. And yeah, I know LI to FFLD CTY isn't apples to apples but there are challenges in both areas in terms of terrain, population etc. The difference is, they're not making excuses at Connecticut L&P or United Illuminating like LIPA is. The communications are a world apart from LIPA's. The updates are constant.

But it's not the fault of the LINE WORKERS. Those out working OT to try to get the power back aren't the problem. The problem is the (mis)management of LIPA. This came from the top. They could have had trucks out in areas repairing some of the damage before the winds became dangerous. And there is absolutely NO REASON that LIPA shouldn't have been prepared. They used the same BS with Irene last year. Do they not watch the news, because all the reports indicated what "worst case scenario" could be, and that (IMHO) should be what LIPA prepares for.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

I am one of the lucky ones and my power came back yesterday. While agressive behavior is unacceptable, simply complaining on fb, etc. is ok with me. I think it is human nature to complain when you are out of power and cold even though you are still considered lucky. It is a very frustrating situation for all so complaining is ok by me. Throwing rocks at a lipa truck - not ok.

yea unfortunately it's not that easy. Most people won't leave their homes because they're afraid of looting. I for one am a little apprehensive. There's been several robberies in my area alone.

I definitely am very thank and fortunate. I don't think people are not thankful. But I think people complain and they don't realize what's going on out there. Without tv I really don't know of all the devastation going on and I'm sure there are many people who have no clue. I didn't even hear about breezy point until yesterday!!!!!!!! I'm cutting people slack this week because honestly I don't know each individual situation.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA

I've been getting emails from lipas storm center at least once a day if.not twice. They are trying to restore hospitals first I believe and are also.working on their substations. Then nursing homes and schools. I believe thats what I read but can't cut and paste on here. They said this is why you haven't seen so many in the neighborhoods bc they cant even begin to restore power until ths substations are fixed. Just remember the people in the parking lot may not have slept since they started. Who knows what they went through before that also. They might have lost their homes or worse and while working these hours these men and women may be leaving their own families in the dark. The island went through something catastrophic. Before the storm hit LIPA said 7-10 days so we could better prepare. At least the islands slowly coming back. It should only get better now. My brother got out of LB last night. I am hearing more planes and trains and a garbage truck I think. Fingers crossed for all of you!
